'Tis the season: Marketing Strategies for Bowling Centers
By Blair Blumenscheid | Biz Booster
Between November and January, bowling centers face an extraordinary opportunity to boost revenue and build customer loyalty. With businesses seeking holiday party venues, students on break, and cooler weather driving indoor activities, strategic marketing can help capture increased seasonal spending. While you may have already established your holiday programs, here are fresh concepts to enhance your seasonal offerings. FAMILY-FOCUSED FESTIVE PROGRAMS Transform your bowling center into a premier family entertainment destination with a "Holiday Lane Adventures Pass." Available during Thanksgiving week and valid through January, this festive passport-style program features challenges and activities that families can complete throughout the season. THANKSGIVING WEEK KICKOFF • Turkey Time Challenge o Special holiday rates with small prizes for three strikes in a row o Family "Turkey Team Tournament" with holiday- themed prizes o Black Friday "Early Bird Special" Offer this special the morning after Thanksgiving to capture Black Friday shoppers o "Give & Gather" promotion: Donate five canned goods for charity to receive a game pass or $5 arcade card DECEMBER FESTIVITIES • Strike with Santa Sundays o Partner with team members or league bowlers to volunteer to be your Santa for the season o Dedicated photo area near the lanes o "Santa's Workshop" packages including games, shoes, and snack bar treats o Featured menu items: Santa's Hot Cocoa & Cookies
• Elf on the Lane Hunt o Multiple elves hidden throughout the center with varying point values o Create a scavenger hunt for families to find the elves between frames. Include clues or a special story at each point of play o Weekly prizes for most successful elf spotters o Social media engagement through daily location hints o Offer some advertising trades with local businesses to provide prizes for successful elf hunters • Host some Reindeer Games o Break the traditional rules of bowling with fun games
like no-tap, 3-6-10, colored pins and more during special hours of bowling throughout the season
• Gingerbread Frame Game Days o Decide on some designated sweet
days in your calendar (the days that need a boost for business through the holiday season)
o Promote a game with a specific
structure. Example, Purchase 3 games of bowling and strike during
specific “sweet frames” (example: Game 1, frames 2,
7 and 9; Game 2, frames 1, 6, 10; Game 3,
4
frames 5,10) o Based on a printout at the end of their paid games, bowlers who achieve the Gingerbread Frames get a special prize or earn an entry into a drawing at the end of the season • North Pole Lanes o Take a pair of lanes and make them the hottest pair in your center o Decorate them like the North Pole o Promote this as a premium purchase and first come, first serve availability o Make it feel like a bucket list moment of the holiday season to bowl on this pair PROGRESSIVE REWARD STRUCTURE FOR THE, "HOLIDAY LANE ADVENTURES PASS." • Bronze Level: Complete 3 holiday challenges • Silver Level: Complete 6 holiday challenges • Gold Level: Complete 9 holiday challenges • Platinum Level: Complete all holiday challenges Special recognition and grand prizes for Platinum achievers CORPORATE HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS Consider offering "Early Bird Holiday Celebration" packages for November, attracting companies that want to avoid the December rush. If holiday parties are a big part of your traffic in these months, consider additional enhancements to make it attractive. Consider partnering with a photo booth company or building your own with a backdrop and props (there are thousands on Amazon) where people can take photos on their iPhones to remember the event. Market these as "stress-free holiday planning solutions" for corporate event planners. WINTER LEAGUE INNOVATIONS Have an open night? It’s not too late to build a short season league! Launch six-to-eight-week holiday-themed leagues to convert casual players into regular bowlers.
Consider non-traditional formats like scotch doubles or baker team setups to attract indoor sports enthusiasts (pickleballers, sand volleyball players, etc) displaced by winter weather. Incentivize participation with unique prizes, nightly F&B specials, or New Year's Eve package rewards. GIFT CARD STRATEGY If you don’t offer a gift card or certificate currently, now is the time! It’s a great way to capitalize on folks who want to give to their friends. Maximize gift-giving potential with innovative "Bowl & Give" bundles. Consider implementing a "spend X, get X" promotion similar to successful restaurant models. You may even consider creating limited-edition holiday-themed cards that include special perks for January redemption – helping to drive business during the post-holiday lull. NEW YEAR'S EVE PLANNING Secure early bookings by promoting diverse New Year's Eve packages:
• Family-friendly early evening sessions • Teen-focused midnight celebrations • Premium adults-only packages
• Hourly "NYE Strike Challenge" with progressive prizes NYE Strike Challenge: At the top of each hour on NYE where one player from each party on each reserved lane tries to get a strike. Draw a ticket each hour with the bowler number. That person steps up to throw a strike. The last bowler standing earns a prize. IMPLEMENTATION TIPS Success requires advance planning and consistent execution. Begin implementing these strategies by early November to maximize impact and secure bookings. Focus on creating experiences that establish your center as a community holiday tradition rather than just another venue option.

Staying Positive and Focused After the Election: A Bowling Business Owner’s Perspective By Gary Hulsenberg | Marketing Maestro
As a business owner in the bowling industry, a presidential election brings more than just a new face in office; it influences consumer confidence, local economies, and the general mood of communities. When people react to the election results, your business has a unique opportunity to be a consistent, uplifting environment. Now more than ever, bowling centers and pro shops can provide that positive space where people unwind, reconnect, and find comfort. Here’s how to keep your business focused, engaging, and successful in the post- election atmosphere. Bowling has always been about fun and connection, making your center a haven for everyone—regardless of political views. Fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment where people can escape and relax helps remind patrons that some things, like the thrill of bowling, remain a source of enjoyment. Whether it’s league night or family outing day, emphasizing that your doors are open to all can create an atmosphere where everyone feels at home and connected. Consider using your space to bring people together. Bowling naturally encourages connection and camaraderie, so hosting community-building events, like your mixed-league nights or family-themed evenings, can foster teamwork that transcends political divides. When people come together over a shared love of the game, they’re reminded that these connections matter more than differences of opinion, making your center a place of unity and positivity. As the dust settles post-election, your patrons look to you as a constant. Keeping a calm, optimistic outlook reflects confidence and stability, assuring customers that your center will always be a part of their lives. The national landscape may shift, but your community remains the heart of your business, and through your actions, you can show patrons and staff alike that your focus is on providing that familiar, comforting escape. Local involvement helps reinforce this stability—sponsoring youth programs, offering family discounts, or partnering with other area
businesses strengthens your local ties and shows that your commitment to the community is unwavering, regardless of what’s happening on the national stage. Elections naturally stir up strong emotions, so fostering a positive environment is essential for everyone’s experience, including your staff. Lead by example. When employees or customers engage in political discussions, gently steer conversations back to shared interests in bowling and community enjoyment. Your lighthearted approach will help keep tensions low and remind everyone that your bowling center is a place to relax and connect, not debate. Investing in your team also ensures that customers are met with friendly service and positive energy. Happier employees create a welcoming environment, and team-building efforts pay off in customer satisfaction and loyalty. Bowling is timeless, a simple joy that reminds people of the pleasure in life’s little things. Post-election, keep your promotions and messaging lighthearted and fun — highlight the thrill of strikes, the camaraderie of leagues, and the enjoyment of time spent with friends and family. Focus on the core joys of bowling, reminding everyone that this game is here for all, no matter what’s going on in the world. “ Focus on the core joys of bowling, reminding everyone that this game is here for all, no matter what’s going on in the world. As a business owner, you’ve likely weathered many challenges, and the post-election period is another opportunity to display resilience and hope. Flexibility, positivity, and focus on your vision allow you to adapt to changes and create an uplifting environment for your community. Your bowling center is a place for recreation and connection, a beacon of joy during times of change.

9 Holiday Cocktails Curated for Bowling Centers By Nichole Thomas As someone who has bartended in a bowling center on the busiest of league nights, I understand the fine line between crafting a delightful cocktail and creating a chaotic mess behind the bar. While some cocktail specials sound fantastic on paper, they often fall short when put into practice— whether it's because they take too long to prepare during busy league nights, feature ingredients that spoil too quickly, or are simply too niche for our regulars to embrace beyond the first order. To truly succeed in a bowling center environment, a cocktail must be simple to make, use readily available ingredients, and, most importantly, taste great. With that in mind, I’ve curated a list of cocktails that strike the perfect balance. These drinks are not only easy to whip up, but they also utilize everyday ingredients that can be found behind most bars. Consider adapting these recipes or even holding a social media vote to see which holiday cocktail your patrons would like to see featured this season. This way, you’ll create a sense of community and excitement, ensuring that your bar remains a vibrant part of your bowling center experience.
WINTER OLD FASHIONED Ingredients: 2 oz Bourbon 1/4 oz spiced simple syrup 1 oz triple sec or 2 dashes angostura bitter Orange slice for garnish Instructions: 1. Mix the Cocktail: In a mixing glass, combine 2 oz of bourbon, 1/4 oz of spiced simple syrup, and 1 oz of triple sec (or add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters instead). 2. Stir: Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir gently for about 15-20 seconds to chill and combine the ingredients. 3. Serve: Strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with ice. 4. Garnish: Add an orange slice to the glass for garnish. At first glance, this seems like a pretty fancy cocktail...well, yes it is. But it is quick to whip up and will be enjoyed by all your bourbon lovers.
THE GRINCH Ingredients: 1.5 oz vodka
1/2 oz blue curacao 4 oz pineapple juice 1/5 oz lemon juice 1/5 oz simple syrup Instructions: 1. Mix the Ingredients: In a cocktail shaker, combine 1.5 oz of vodka, 1/2 oz of blue curaçao, 4 oz of pineapple juice, a squeeze of lemon juice, and 1/5 oz (similar to a squeeze) of simple syrup.
2. Shake Well: Fill the shaker
with ice and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds to thoroughly mix and chill the ingredients.
Tip! The color may come out a bit turqoise instead of green, depending on the brand of ingredients and the measurements. You can add green food coloring at the shaking step if needed. 3. Strain and Serve: Fill a glass with ice and strain the mixture into the glass. 4. Garnish (Optional): For a festive touch, consider garnishing with a cherry. As far as looks go, this drink will definitely stand out, but the taste will be simple enough for league bowlers to enjoy for weeks. 2b.

SUGAR COOKIE MARTINI Ingredients: 1.5 oz vanilla vodka 1.5 oz irish cream 2 oz milk 1 oz amaretto
SANTA'S COFFEE Ingredients:
MRS. CLAUSE CRAN-WHISKEY Ingredients: 4 oz cranberry juice
2 oz irish cream 6 oz hot coffee 1 oz irish whiskey whipped cream (optional) Instructions: 1. Brew the Coffee: Start by
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 2 oz whiskey or bourbon
1-2 teaspoons of rosemarry simple syrup or muddle rosemarry sprigs (optional) Instructions: 1. Mix the Base: In a cocktail shaker, combine 4 oz of cranberry juice, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 2 oz of whiskey or bourbon. Stir or shake gently to mix the cinnamon thoroughly into the juice and combine all ingredients. 2. Incorporate the Rosemary: If using rosemary simple syrup, add 1-2 teaspoons to the mixture and stir. If you’re muddling fresh rosemary sprigs, place 1-2 sprigs in the shaker and gently muddle them to release their flavor before adding the other ingredients. 3. Serve: Fill a glass with ice and strain the mixture into the glass over the ice. 4. Garnish (Optional): For an extra touch, garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig or a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. For our final drink, we have my favorite, the cran-whiskey. This drink is super simple to make, and might even stick to your cocktail menu full- time.
1 teaspoon powdered sugar frosting and sprinkles for rim (optional) Instructions: 1. Prepare the Glass (Optional): If you want to rim your cup with frosting and sprinkles, start by applying a thin layer of frosting around the rim of a martini glass. Dip the frosted rim into a plate of sprinkles to coat it evenly. 2. Mix the Cocktail: In a cocktail shaker, combine 1.5 oz of vanilla vodka, 1.5 oz of Irish cream, 2 oz of milk, 1 oz of amaretto, and 1 tsp of powdered sugar. Feel free to omit the powdered sugar if needed. 3. Shake Well: Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds to ensure all ingredients are well combined and chilled. 4. Strain and Serve: Strain the mixture into the prepared cup. Is this drink insane, yes. Will it taste amazing, also yes. This is the most complex recipe, and might be the most niche, but it screams "holiday season" the loudest!
brewing 6 oz of hot coffee. Or... if your center has a coffee maker, just brew a pot before league starts to prep.
2. Mix the Ingredients: In a
heatproof cup (styrofoam cup), combine 2 oz of Irish cream and 1 oz of Irish whiskey. 3. Add the Coffee: Pour the hot coffee into the cup with the Irish cream and whiskey mixture, stirring gently to combine all the ingredients. 4. Top with Whipped Cream: By customer request, add whipped cream and cinnamon on top for an extra touch of indulgence. This warm cocktail will be perfect for senior leagues, when coffee is most likely already being brewed, and for super chilly league nights.

Highlighting Community Involvement and Partnerships on Social Media
13
By Yannick Roos | Buzz Builder
Social media is a powerful tool to showcase your bowling center’s community involvement and partnerships. By promoting your contributions to local events, collaborating with nearby businesses, and engaging with your audience, you can strengthen your ties with the community and attract more customers. SHOWCASING YOUR CENTER’S INVOLVEMENT IN LOCAL EVENTS AND CHARITIES When your center participates in charity events or sponsors local activities, share it on social media to highlight your commitment to the community: • Post photos and videos: Capture the moments of your involvement in local events, such as fundraisers or charity drives, and share them on social media. • Tell the story: Use captions to explain the impact of the event and why it matters to your bowling center. • Celebrate community impact: Share testimonials or shout-outs to emphasize how your center supports the community and encourage your followers to participate in future events. This not only builds your center’s reputation but also encourages customers to support a business that gives back. PARTNERING WITH OTHER BUSINESSES FOR MUTUAL PROMOTION Collaborating with local businesses can expand your reach and strengthen your community presence. Social media is ideal for promoting these partnerships: • Cross-promote: Tag each other in posts and share partner content to increase visibility for both businesses. • Joint events: Partner up for local events or promotions and share event highlights across both platforms • Spotlight partners: Feature your business partners with posts or stories, introducing them to your followers and promoting joint offers or specials. These collaborations benefit both businesses and reinforce your center’s local connections.
STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY TIES THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA Use your platforms to engage with the community and build deeper connections: • Engage with followers: Respond to comments and encourage interaction to create a personal connection with your audience. • Promote local events: Share information about community happenings, even if your center isn’t involved, to show you care about the wider community. • Encourage user-generated content: Ask your customers to share their experiences at your center, and repost their content to strengthen your bond with your audience. “ Share testimonials or shout- outs to emphasize how your center supports the community and encourage your followers to participate in future events. CONCLUSION By highlighting community involvement and partnerships on social media, your bowling center can strengthen its reputation and build loyalty. Showcasing local events, collaborating with businesses, and engaging your community fosters goodwill, helping your business stand out and thrive in the local area.

Bundles — Not Just for Insurance By Mike Sinek | Pin Purveyor
The Concept of the Bundle: In customer recreation businesses—such as amusement parks, gyms, fitness studios, and entertainment (bowling) centers—offering bundles and packages presents several advantages that enhance the customer experience, drive revenue, and boost customer retention. By grouping services or experiences into packages, businesses can create value, simplify decision-making for customers, and foster brand loyalty. Below are some key benefits of incorporating bundles and packages into a customer recreation business strategy.
IMPROVED CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE AND SATISFACTION Bundles and packages simplify decision-making for customers by combining multiple services or activities into a single offering. This eliminates the need for customers to compare different options or select each service individually, which can be time-consuming and confusing. When customers are presented with well-curated packages, they appreciate the convenience of getting everything they need in one place. For example, a ski resort might offer an all-inclusive package that covers lift passes, equipment rentals, and ski lessons. This allows customers to focus on enjoying their vacation without worrying about the logistics of coordinating each service separately. By making the purchase process simpler and more convenient, businesses improve customer satisfaction and the overall experience. ENHANCED CUSTOMER RETENTION AND LOYALTY Packages often encourage repeat visits or long-term engagement, especially when they are designed with customer retention in mind. For instance, a gym might offer a monthly membership package that includes not only access to the gym but also discounts on personal training or exclusive classes. By bundling these services together, the gym incentivizes members to continue using their facilities and participating in their programs, thus fostering loyalty. Moreover, packages that span longer periods—such as annual memberships or seasonal passes—create a sense of commitment and exclusivity. Customers who invest in these long-term bundles are more likely to return and engage regularly, strengthening their relationship with the business. OPPORTUNITY FOR UPSELLING AND CROSS-SELLING Bundles and packages provide a natural platform for upselling and cross-selling complementary services. By packaging popular offerings with additional services, businesses can introduce customers to new experiences they may not have initially considered. For example, an amusement park could bundle a ticket with a meal plan and a photo package. While the customer may have only intended to purchase the ticket, the added value
INCREASED REVENUE AND PROFIT MARGINS
One of the most significant advantages of offering bundles and packages is the potential for increased revenue. By bundling services together, businesses can encourage customers to spend more than they might have with individual purchases. For example, a fitness center might offer a package that includes access to personal training sessions, group classes, and spa services at a slightly discounted rate compared to purchasing each service individually. This not only encourages customers to spend more upfront but also maximizes the utilization of various services, boosting the business's overall profit margins. Packages also provide an opportunity to sell higher-priced items or services that customers may not have initially considered. For example, a theme park may offer a family package that includes park admission, meal vouchers, and fast-track access to popular rides. By offering this complete experience, the park can attract more customers and increase per-customer spending.
“
Packages also provide an opportunity to sell higher-priced items or services that customers may not have initially considered.

TYPES OF BUNDLES
of the bundle persuades them to spend more while also providing them with a better overall experience. This approach can be particularly effective in customer recreation businesses, where customers are often seeking comprehensive, immersive experiences. Upselling through bundles allows businesses to cater to these desires while simultaneously increasing sales. COMPETITIVE DIFFERENTIATION Offering unique bundles and packages can set a business apart from its competitors. In a crowded market, recreation businesses need to differentiate themselves to attract and retain customers. Creative packages tailored to different customer segments—such as family-friendly bundles, couples’ experiences, or VIP packages—can give a business a competitive edge by offering value that competitors may not provide. By understanding customer preferences and crafting personalized packages, businesses can create niche offerings that appeal to specific audiences, enhancing

their brand image and market position. INVENTORY AND RESOURCE OPTIMIZATION
BOWLING Time bowling with Pizza and Shoes.
Bundling services can also help businesses optimize the use of their resources and manage inventory more effectively. For instance, a business that bundles slower- moving services with more popular ones can increase the utilization of underperforming assets. This strategy allows businesses to make the most of their offers while maintaining customer satisfaction. In conclusion, bundling and packaging services in customer recreation businesses provide a range of advantages, including increased revenue, enhanced customer convenience, improved retention, and a competitive edge. By creating tailored packages, businesses can meet diverse customer needs, encourage repeat business, and optimize their operations for greater efficiency.
If you have an amusement area, roll player cards into the bundle as well.
For adult offerings you can also include beer or mixed drinks in the bundle.
The goal of bundles is not only to offer the customer easy decision making versus everything being ala carte but to show the customer all the facets of your business. Regardless of whether it is inside your Pro Shop, Food and Beverage, Arcade or Bowling Operation.
