Preparing your home for the winter is a must!
In an ideal world your home wouldn’t need any upkeep; the seasons would change and the years would go by without you having to do any repairs or renovations. The hard reality, how- ever, is a little different! Your home must be maintained properly in order for you to benefit from all its comforts for as long as possible. A thorough inspection at this time of year will help you protect and enjoy your investment.
HERE ARE A FEW NECESSARY STEPS TO PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR THE WINTER.
• Check that all doors and windows are airtight. Replace any weather-stripping if necessary. • Remove any dead leaves from the gutters and run water in the downspout to ensure that it drains well. • Empty and put away the garden hose. • Contact a specialized professional to check your heating system. • Ensure that your chimney is not blocked; have it cleaned by a chimney sweep. • Vacuum the baseboard heaters in order to remove accumulated dust as well as the grills and ducts of a forced air heating system. • Measure the level of the sewage sludge in your septic tank in case it needs emptying (this should be done every three years). • Remove the screens to prevent condensa- tion on the windows and to let in as much sunshine as possible. The heat and light of the sun are so welcome in the winter time! • Check the smoke detectors and the carbon monoxide alarms. Replace the batteries. • Have your well water analyzed (a bac- terial analysis should be done every six months).
• Prepare any garden plants that need to be protected for the winter and put away your garden furniture.
