Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (UK) LLP 2016/17

Skadden is on the hunt for lawyers who “get it”, as its bold brochure proclaims. Read on to find out what "it" is and get an idea if this firm is right for you.

LAWYERS WHO GET IT

SKADDEN, ARPS, SLATE, MEAGHER & FLOM (UK) LLP

Most people can’t tell you exactly what “it” is, but they say they know it when they see it. At Skadden, our lawyers “get it” — perhaps you have “it”?

DANNY TRICOT, GRADUATE RECRUITMENT PARTNER, CAPITAL MARKETS / MEGAN FINLEY, ASSOCIATE, CORPORATE

IF YOU THINK If you think about what you want from your career — unparalleled training, responsibility from the start, cutting-edge work for top clients, a strong firm culture in a global environment — it might be time to get to know Skadden better. Skadden is a place for big thinkers. We aren’t afraid to stand out from the crowd — that’s how we got our start — and we pour every ounce of creativity and solution-minded lawyering into serving our clients in 40-plus disciplines across five continents. We aren’t looking to mould the next generation of Skadden lawyers in the exact image of our current partners. At the end of the day, we provide the structure and the resources, but only you can bring it all together in your own career. The lawyers who “get it” always do. You worked hard to get into university, and you work hard in your extracurriculars. Let us show you how far that effort can take you at a place like this.

YOU WANT TO BE TRAINED BY THE BEST

Law school provides you with the tools; Skadden teaches you the craft.

Skadden was the only firm ranked in the top three for “legal expertise” in the Financial Times European “Innovative Lawyers” report each year from 2013-15.

JO JIMENEZ, ASSOCIATE, BANKING

WHAT MAKES SKADDEN DIFFERENT?

We know how hard it is to decide where you’d like to apply. There are many law firms in London, from small boutiques to international, full-service firms. Many of the firms say similar things about themselves — it can be difficult to distinguish one from another. We believe that Skadden is genuinely different. On the one hand, Skadden is one of the largest firms in the world, with 1,700 lawyers in 23 offices, and we regularly appear at the very top of industry rankings. On the other hand, our Frankfurt and Munich offices recruit only a small number of associates and referendars. This unique combination gives you the opportunity to work on some of the world’s most complex and innovative deals while having closer access to senior colleagues and a more personalized training experience than our peer firms with larger city offices offer. Our attorneys in London will help you develop a business-minded approach, become agile at anticipating client needs and adopt a “can-do” approach to achieving goals. Your experience at Skadden will make you unafraid to challenge yourself to identify a new way to solve a problem. Skadden lawyers provide a unique level of client service by combining local German experience with the resources of the global Skadden network — resulting in cutting-edge solutions for clients.

Take a closer look. See for yourself what makes a difference.

YOU WANT CLIENTS WHO MAKE THE HEADLINES

Help shape tomorrow’s news today.

Few law firms advise as many leading corporations, financial institutions, governments and individuals as we do. If you want to work on the biggest deals with top-end clients, we have the portfolio you’re looking for.

SUPPORT Throughout your training contract, a qualified solicitor will mentor you and provide advice and guidance whenever required. You will receive regular performance reviews and appraisals from the training principal and your supervisor, who will take a proactive role in shaping your development and progression.

THOMAS KIM, ASSOCIATE, FUNDS

TRAINEE DEVELOPMENT We pride ourselves on our broad and comprehensive training programme. In addition to completing your Professional Skills Course, you will have a regular training schedule. Drawing upon the experience and teaching abilities of Skadden partners, associates and qualified external consultants, we also offer weekly training seminars, workshops and updates for associates at all levels and across our practice areas. In addition, training is offered in-house by providers such as Kaplan Altior, BPP Law School and The College of Law, as well as external speakers who demonstrate online research tools and other professional services. Trainees also are invited to attend practice area discussions about current practice-specific developments, such as new legislation and court decisions. Shortly after qualifying, associates attend Skadden’s firmwide retreat in New York to participate in an intensive four-week programme with associates in the U.S. and other global offices that provides business and legal skills training.

SPONSORSHIP AND FUNDING

Skadden maintains an arrangement with BPP Law School for our prospective trainees to study the GDL and the Fast-Track LPC, which means our trainees are assured places, have access to a high standard of teaching and receive the benefit of studying together. During the LPC, our future trainees are invited to a series of workshops geared towards providing an introduction to the firm. The workshops cover areas such as corporate law, the anatomy of deals, our London practice departments and “meet the partners” sessions. We allocate a Skadden “buddy” to all future trainees during the Fast-Track LPC, typically a newly qualified associate who will serve as a point of contact until your qualification as a solicitor. During the GDL and LPC, future trainees also are kept up to date with developments in the London office and invited to all officewide social events.

PETE COULTON, GRADUATE RECRUITMENT PARTNER, BANKING

SEAT STRUCTURE Your training contract is divided into four six-month seats, in which you will gain experience in corporate transactions and litigation/international arbitration. You will have the opportunity to gain exposure to other offices or practice areas in advance of qualifying as a solicitor, including undertaking an international seat in our New York and Hong Kong offices. Client secondments are arranged on a case-by-case basis.

YOU WANT TO JOIN A GLOBAL FIRM WITH A CONSISTENT CULTURE

A cohesive culture is a priority. We have grown organically, only incorporating individuals or small groups who fit our strategic goals. As a trainee in London you will have the benefit of being part of a small team with the support and resources of one of the largest firms in the world. Frankly, that’s us. We’ve never merged with another firm. Not once.

LISA GILFORD, PARTNER, LOS ANGELES

VACATION SCHEMES The majority of Skadden’s training contracts are offered to students who participate in our vacation scheme programme, which provides participants with first-hand experience working on actual global transactions. The programme also provides insight into the firm’s culture and atmosphere. Each student is paired with an associate supervisor and trainee liaison who identify substantive and suitable assignments. Our vacation scheme students are offered the option to practise in a single area. However, most participants divide their time between two practice areas, thereby gaining greater exposure to our work. Students participate in training workshops and insight sessions focused on current matters, which aids their professional development and provides a first-hand perspective from Skadden lawyers. Social events allow vacation students to interact with each other and Skadden lawyers on a more informal level. A recent example includes a stadium tour and private dinner at Chelsea Football Club. Our two-week placements are offered over Easter break and the summer months. We remunerate vacation scheme students £300 per week to assist with expenses, and we are happy to help source accommodations. Undergraduate candidates need to have reached the penultimate year of their law degree or the final year of a non-law degree.
