Notes and tips The latest synthetic fibres ensure coating quality not unlike their natural counterparts, but they are more durable and are easier to clean. The fibre production method (weaving or knitting), their mechanical properties, the splitting of ends and the pile length define how well a paint roller absorbs the coating product, what is their work efficiency and how will look the final look of the painted surface. Materials used for the paint roller covers include synthetic fibres (polyamide, polyacrylate and polyester) and natural fibres (lamb wool and velour). Polyamide-fibre coverings deserve special consideration: the fibres are very elastic, have a very high absorption of paint, release the paint evenly, and satisfy most demanding users.
Practical tips
To get excellent coating results, three elements must be chosen with perfect accuracy:
1
2
3
Substrate
Paint
Paint tools
The final effect of coating and the efficiency of coating product yield depend on the tool, the paint or coat, and the type of surface. Here, the paint roller cover is critical.
Basic rules for painting with rollers: l the smoother the painted surface is to be the thinner the covering should be used l the rougher the wall (façade) surface is the thicker the covering should be used l the thicker the covering the higher efficiency per square meter l the higher viscosity of the paint is the thinner covering should be used l in case of any doubts, shorter covering should be used
When planning a job, painting accessories should be used to optimize processing. For coating of high surfaces, professional telescopic poles (see p. 88) are recommended to avoid using scaffolding. The optimum selection of the frame handle is essential for improvement of the comfort of working with paint rollers. The two-component frame handles are designated “K2” in this Product Catalogue. The large-diameter, 58 mm paint rollers from Hardy also deserve special attention. Compared to regular paint rollers, their rendering yield is up to 30% higher. This helps save time and money on the job without compromising work quality. Preparation for work Before the first use, wash the paint roller cover in water with soap (or a solvent, if you want to coat with solvent-based products). Next, remove all water (solvent) from the paint roller cover by rolling against an absorbing surface. This will greatly improve the absorption of the paint roller cover and remove all loose microfibres which could be left from the manufacturing process.. Roller painting Dip the paint roller in the paint down to one half of diameter. Next, remove excess paint by wiping over the bucket grid. Repeat as necessary to have the whole paint roller absorb the paint. Apply the paint by rolling over the surface without excessive pressure on the paint roller and work from top to down; finish by smoothing out the applied coating. Cleaning of paint rollers Reusable paint rollers need to be cleaned thoroughly. Once clean, hang the wet paint rollers to dry. Do not leave them laid flat or wrap them in plastic sheet – this may deform or damage the cover.
