FALL 2024 Issue 22
Letter from the Editor As Remembrance Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on the im- portance of pausing to remember. Each November 11th, we honour the brave men and women who served our country in times of war, many making the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. But as the years go by, I fear the significance of Remembrance Day may begin to fade, especially for younger generations.
times, Canadians have continued to answer the call to defend peace and freedom. We must ensure that all veterans, past and present, are remembered with gratitude. On a lighter note, the holiday season is just around the corner, and there is something magical about a Country Christmas. The air gets crisper, lights begin to twinkle, and the excitement of Santa Claus parades fills our many towns. It’s a joy to see families bundled up, watching Santa arrive to kick off the festive season. For me, part of the charm of a Country Christmas is the tra- dition of shopping locally. Our small businesses offer unique, thoughtful gifts that you just can’t find anywhere else. There’s something special about picking out that perfect present for a loved one from a local shop, knowing it’s been chosen with care and love. But more than gifts, what makes Christmas truly magical is spending time with family. Whether it’s gathering around the table for a holiday meal or simply enjoying each other’s company, it’s these moments that create lasting memories. The holiday season reminds us to slow down and appreciate what’s truly important. This year, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of remembrance and of celebration — honouring the past while creating new, joyful traditions with those you love.
With fewer veterans of World War II and the Korean War remaining, and as those of us who personally knew them grow older, it is vital that we pass on their stories to our children and grandchildren. Involving younger generations in Remembrance Day ceremonies — whether through attending services, visiting memorials, or simply sharing family stories of courage and sacrifice — is essential. We must help them understand that the freedoms and privileges they have today were hard-won, often at great personal cost. As we lose the living memory of these wars, it becomes even more crucial to teach younger generations the importance of remembering. We owe it to those who served and to the future of our nation to ensure that the legacy of remembrance continues. It’s also important that we honour those who served in more recent conflicts, including those who fought in Afghanistan. Their sacrifices are a powerful reminder that even in modern

Aylmer-Malahide Museum Tour of Homes by Peri Hayes
Larry Jeffery, in the position of advertising and sales for the Aylmer-Malahide Museum Tour of Homes, delightedly discusses this upcoming event: “This is the 20th year that the tour has been held.” Each year approaching Christmas, four unique houses are decorated for the season by the Aylmer Tour of Homes’ decorating committee of 12 dedicated members. This team has been diligently working on the event for several months. Following the tour, participants are invited to the fifth house — being the Aylmer Museum — to enjoy door prizes and refreshments. As Larry warmly invites, “One can also purchase tickets on Christmas baskets and view the exhibit, ‘The Roaring Twenties’.” As Larry proceeds to earnestly describe: “I am excited about this year’s tour since, like the rest of our customers, I do not get to see the homes until the weekend of. Last year’s tour was spectacular. We had no idea how well the tour would go after the three-year COVID hiatus, but we set records by having about 750 people visit our houses. That was 21% higher than any previous tour.” Moreover, Larry announces that there is an extra component this year: “In addition to the four decorated homes, we have a Christmas lighting display at the Goris’ home on Lyons Line. They have over 50,000 lights, homemade wooden decorations and 550 vintage blow moulds.”
visitors who travelled from Camlachie, Chatham, Edmonton, Kerwood, Kincardine, Listowel, Ottawa, Peterborough, To- ronto and more. “It helps put Aylmer on the map,” Larry cheers. This year, Aylmer-Malahide Museum Tour of Homes will be held on Friday, November 15th from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm, as well as on Saturday, November 16th from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm and on Sunday, November 17th from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Tickets are available for $25.00 with entry for guests under 12 years of age being free of charge. Larry shares that 12 businesses are selling tickets throughout Aylmer, along with Tillsonburg Garden Gate and Lux Salon and Spa, and St. Thomas’ Family Flowers, Mugford’s and Railway City Brewery. Alternatively, tickets are available online through the Aylmer Museum’s website at aylmermuseum.ca/tour-of- homes/, or by calling the Museum at 519-773-9723.
“Each year we are amazed by the people that attend our event,” Larry expresses with gratitude. He reports that 300 guests attended from the Aylmer area in 2023, with 65 from London, 90 between St. Thomas and Port Stanley and a number of

A Monument of Remembrance: New Cenotaph to Honour Local Heroes The new Dutton Dunwich Cenotaph stands as a testament to the hard work, dedication, and community spirit led by Blair Ferguson, who is the driving force behind the project. Blair first conceived the idea and spearheaded the fundraising efforts, gaining over- whelming support from local businesses and community members. “Fundraising went very well,” Blair says, reflecting on the journey. “Out of everybody I went and talked to, pretty much everyone was on board. Of course, there were one or two dissenters, but overall, the response has been overwhelming.” While they raised enough to move forward, Blair emphasizes that donations are still being accepted, as he hopes to establish a fund for future maintenance. “I don’t want this ever to be a burden to the taxpayers,” he explains. Veterans Affairs contributed $25,000 to the project, while local Legions from West Lorne, Port Stanley, St. Thomas, and
Delaware added their support. Blair expresses his amazement at the speed of the fundraising, which surpassed expectations, allowing the $140,000 project to proceed within just over one year. “I’m amazed too,” Blair says. “It’s an incredible relief.” Blair makes a point of expressing gratitude for the many individuals who helped along the way, from Charlotte Oliver of the township, who Blair felt worked tirelessly with him, to Delany Leitch, who handled funding proposals, and Yvonne Brooks, who got local Legions involved. He also notes the contributions of former mayor, Bonnie Vowel, who provided essential contacts. “A lot of people just went above and beyond,” Blair says, crediting the community’s effort over his own. As the cenotaph nears completion, Blair reflects on its deeper significance. “The people whose names will grace that stone, wherever they may be, are also happy that their home soil is finally going to recognize them.” He emphasizes that the cenotaph represents an ‘empty tomb’ for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Blair’s sense of duty to honour those who were left unrecognized is what drives his personal connection to the project. “I never went to war, never put my life on the line, but I feel like I’ve at least done a little bit to get them recognized,” he says. “They gave their lives, and I feel like I’ve done right by them.” The first ceremony at the new cenotaph, located in Sons of Scotland Park in Dutton, will be held on November 11 at 11 am, the traditional time of armistice and remembrance. Blair hopes that the monument will not only serve as a place of remembrance but also as a tool for education. “If it sparks one kid’s interest, that’s one voice who might say in a time of crisis, ‘We have to do something different.’”

Cultivating Innovation: Elgin County’s Rural Businesses Lead the Way by The County of Elgin Elgin County is thriving, and our rural businesses are leading the charge. From family farms to construction companies like Guenther Homes, innovation and sustainability drive economic growth in our region. Our local farming community is at the forefront of this progress. The ‘Seeds of Success’ series, a collaboration between Elgin County and myFM, celebrates local farmers like those at Walker Farms and Cammaert Farms for their pioneering approaches to agriculture. These farms set the standard for sustainable farming practices, ensuring that future generations can continue cultivating the land while protecting the environment. Walker Farms and Cammaert Farms are models of innovative techniques that enhance productivity while reducing environmental impact. Their efforts highlight the crucial role that agricultural innovation plays in strengthening Elgin County’s economy, preserving our vast farmland for generations to come. But innovation doesn’t stop at the fields. Guenther Homes, a Malahide-based company, is making its mark in a different but equally impactful way. Recognized at the 2024 Bridges to Better Business Awards, Guenther Homes is expanding its business to include developing industrial spaces for trades-based businesses. This move is crucial as the demand for skilled trades increases, providing a hub for these essential industries to thrive and creating long-term economic stability in the area. businesses. Events like Cultivating Success provide insights into local planning, online safety, marketing strategies, and funding opportunities. With over 100 attendees, the event served as a platform for entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, form partnerships, and gain the critical knowledge needed to drive their success. It showcased our commitment to fostering innovation and growth in rural businesses. Our Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) program is another cornerstone of our strategy to support local businesses. By engaging with over 90 businesses across Elgin, we’ve identified key areas for improvement, including streamlining development processes and enhancing colla- boration between municipalities and businesses. This initiative empowers businesses with the tools they need to expand and adapt in a rapidly changing economic landscape. Elgin County’s focus on fostering innovation in agriculture and other industries demonstrates our approach to rural economic development. Whether it’s the forward-thinking farming practices at Walker Farms and Cammaert Farms or the creation of industrial spaces for local entrepreneurs by Guenther Homes, these businesses are leading the way in shaping a sustainable and prosperous future for the region. As the county continues to expand, the partnership between rural businesses and our communities will be key to maintaining this momentum. By investing in infrastructure, encouraging innovation, and providing the tools businesses need to succeed, we are laying the groundwork for responsible growth. Together, we are building a thriving region where businesses feel connected, engaged, and empowered to grow and innovate, fostering a deep sense of community pride.

Created in collaboration with Hometown St. Thomas Magazine, the cookbook celebrates the best of local flavours and recipes. Quickly becoming a community favourite in 2023, this year’s edition promises to build on that momentum. Briwood co-owner, Brian Giles, states, “I was excited to bring the book back for 2024 because I think it has great value for customers and other businesses. They heard about the book and were coming in looking for one even after they were long gone.” The cookbook is a genuine community effort, featuring a variety of recipes from local chefs, Briwood staff, and even customers. Each page is filled with tried-and- true family recipes, and each contribution adds a personal touch that reflects the diverse culinary culture of St. Thomas and Elgin County. “It’s exciting to get recipes from popular chefs, staff, other businesses, and people in your own community,” Brian adds. For Briwood Farm Market, the cookbook is more than just a collection of recipes – it’s a celebration of the community spirit that has been at the heart of the business

Shop Local, Support Community as the West Elgin Country Holiday Tour Returns The Country Holiday Tour is set to bring festive cheer to West Elgin from November 8-10, 2024, offering a unique opportunity to shop locally while exploring a variety of small businesses. Pam Wardell, known as The Decorating Diva and the creator and organizer of the event, is excited to share what this year’s tour has in store. Running from 10 am to 4 pm each day, the tour spans across the West Elgin communities of Rodney and West Lorne. “People can expect to visit 23 small businesses at 10 different locations,” Pam reveals. “Each will offer something unique, from home décor, gift and fashion shops to vendors selling handmade baking, blueberry treats, lavender body care products, and much more.” The range of offerings also includes a brewery, a lamb meat farm, pottery, quilts, wooden Christmas crafts, and charcuterie boards. Even local restaurants will be part of the experience. Building on the success of previous years, this year’s marks the fifth edition of the tour. “There are so many new vendors added to the event this year, and we’ve spread them across 10 main locations,” says Pam, inviting participants to consult the tour map for details on where to find everything. The tour promotes not only holiday shopping but also the importance of supporting local businesses. “Shopping local is critical to the sustainability of the local economy,” Pam stresses. “Small business owners offer personal customer service, take time to build relationships, and have unique
products that are made locally and in Canada.” She adds that when you shop local, you’re doing more than making a purchase—you’re helping to keep the community viable. “A community with businesses and services is inviting to both tourists and new homeowners.” Pam believes the experience of shopping at small local shops far surpasses the alternative of heading to malls or mega online retailers. “You build relationships, receive personal customer service, and enjoy the experience of getting out and socializing with friends and community people. People want a destination experience!” she exclaims. And that’s exactly what the Country

Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). By focusing on technological advancements, this initiative seeks to improve continuity and durability within the industry. Meanwhile in Elgin County, the Housing-Enabling Water Systems funding for Aylmer, London, Southwold and Thames Centre was declared on September 18th. Rob asserts, “In my capacity as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Elgin-Middlesex-London, the Housing-Enabling Water Systems funding is welcome news. The over $57 million dollar investment will enable more than 21,300 new homes to be built faster in London, Southwold, Thames Centre and Aylmer. We are getting shovels in the ground to support population growth, while aiming to hit and exceed local housing targets. The arrival of Volkswagen and Andriani Ltd., along with new businesses choosing Ontario, has attracted an abundance of new workers that need housing. The Housing-Enabling Water
Systems funding will provide financial support to help develop new subdivisions, which supports the long-term growth and prosperity of Elgin-Middlesex-London.” Detailing what this initiative entails, Rob states, “The Housing- Enabling Water Systems Fund will help municipalities develop, repair, rehabilitate and expand critical drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure. Projects funded through the program aim to unlock more housing opportunities, support the province’s growing population, protect communities and enhance economic growth. Ontario invested $970 million in 54 water infrastructure projects across 60 municipalities, and recently announced a further $250 million in a second intake to support more projects.” Representing 17,576 home builds, London has been selected for $23,725,000. Aiding another 17,500, Southwold will receive $27,895,819. Happy Harvest by Laura Fraser, OFA Member Service Representative, Oxford and Elgin Counties Laura.fraser@ofa.on.ca As we get closer to winter, I hope everyone had a safe and bountiful harvest. In speaking with members, some experienced challenges and un- expected results. I would like to re- mind readers that as things slow
down a bit in this season, it is a good time to check on yourself and your neighbours. Agriculture Wellness Ontario (agriculturewellnessontario.ca) offers education programs, mental health and counselling for the farming community. The resources are free, confidential and easy to access. This time of year, at the Ontario Federal of Agriculture (OFA) also means it is time for regional meetings. Over the next several months, meetings will be held throughout the province, offering our members a platform to discuss key issues and explore opportunities to get involved. These meetings are an excellent opportunity to get to know your local federations, network with fellow members and share your input and concerns. It is also the time when we elect leadership and representatives for positions on the OFA Policy Advisory Council and as delegates to the 2024 Annual General Meeting, scheduled for November 26-27 in Toronto. Recent meetings in Elgin and Oxford County included tours of the Gay Lea Dairy Museum and guest speakers from both Oxford and Wilmot Township to discuss the importance of THE TURKEY SHOPPE
farmland preservation. Those in attendance also received an OFA update from OFA Zone 4 Director Tracey Arts and Executive Director Ethan Wallace. Regional meetings are a great way to connect with the agricultural community and learn valuable information pertaining to your county. If you want to engage more with your local federation or receive updates from OFA, please contact me anytime! Laura.fraser@ofa.on.ca.

OUTSTANDING IN HER FIELD It’s Produce, Ma’am by Sarah Harrison, Co-Owner of Mazak Farms We are a small farm, which grows and sells various certified organic products, mainly produce. Our produce, like all other produce, can go bad because, well, it’s produce! Who hasn’t been guilty of filling your fridge’s veggie drawer to the
to reach the owners? Is it because it feels powerful to make a veiled threat? Is it because some people just need something to be mad about? Perhaps, all the above. It is trendy and ‘insta worthy’ to shop local and buy direct from the farm, which we are very grateful for. However, that trend doesn’t seem to recognize that the local businesses that people like to support have limited resources, and as much as we all try, we aren’t perfect. Should we expect from our local business the product we pay for? Absolutely. Should we, as local businesses, be expected to bear the burden of people’s unrealistic expectations? Absolutely not. We simply don’t have the resources to indulge in that. Remember, when you buy produce, use it! Keep being outstanding in your field.
top on grocery day only to discover a week or so later you now have a drawer of, ‘Oh shoot, I forgot to use that’? Someone once told me that the veggie drawer in your fridge should be called the ‘drawer of good intentions’. Isn’t that the truth? We had an experience this growing season with a customer who purchased produce from us. About six weeks after her purchase, she reached out to lodge a complaint because the produce had turned bad. She demanded a refund and made a passive- aggressive threat to share her experience of ‘poor customer service’ online. Poor customer service? Interesting! When you buy a bunch of bananas at the grocery store, and they go bad a week later, do you think, ‘I bet those farmers overseas were trying to cheat me? They gave me bad bananas’? No! Of course, you don’t! Because we all know that in time, produce goes bad. It makes me wonder why we seem to have different expectations of our local, small producers. As we said in our response to the upset customer, “‘It’s produce, ma’am. It goes bad if you don’t use it”. I’m pretty confident she would not have expected a refund from the multi-million-dollar grocery chain for produce purchased from them that has turned, so why is there an expectation from the small producer? Is it because it is easier

There’s no place like home... by PSFT Artistic Director Liz Gilroy
The world keeps spinning and life keeps moving on, so onwards and upwards we go! It is time to make new traditions in our new home and at the theatre. Christmas is always a time for traditions, and we have a couple of new ones at PSFT this Novem- ber and December. A Chist- mas Carol will have two per- formances on Saturday, No-
Little did I know last November that a year later I would find myself living in Port Stanley, but here we are. After a wonderful, yet hectic year at The Port Stanley Festival Theatre, I have finally been able to take a breath and unpack our lives in our new home in the village. For seven years we called the small hamlet of Cloyne home. It was a huge change for this Toronto gal when we left ‘the big smoke’ for a rural property on the water. Cloyne came with new challenges -- septic system, a well, a massive lawn to cut, a long driveway to be plowed, dropping off the garbage at the dump, the black flies (I had no idea!), beavers, a dodgy cell signal (Port ain’t much better}, chopping wood for the wood stove and piling and storing wood for the season; I could go on....... When Simon Joynes, Artistic Director at PSFT for 18 years, was not well after Christmas last, I came to Port 3 days a week and then drove the five-hour commute home to ensure that we kept the theatre running smoothly. I was also visiting Simon once a week in Port Dover so we could chat about the next season and the day-to-day logistics of running the theatre. Those were tough visits as Simon was quite sick by then, but looking back, I thank my lucky stars we had that time together. We lost Simon in February, and the next few months were difficult and sad, to say the least. Now suddenly it’s November and my whole life has changed, not to mention the view I wake up to every morning.
vember the 23rd at 1 pm and 7 pm; it is going to be magical, so don’t miss out. On December 6th and 7th we are thrilled to welcome award-winning vocalist Denise Pelley and The Big Bandemic, all seventeen of them, playing their swinging tunes. That Big Band sound is gonna be sweet. I hope you and your family can join us for these two fabulous shows this winter -- we would love to see you this holiday season. This year I’ll be adopting a new tradition; Christmas morning biscotti from scratch. A wise man once told me it was the perfect way to start Christmas morning.
