Helping payroll clients to solve the financial well-being puzzle
S ince beginning your payroll journey, how many times have you been asked by family and friends to check their payslip? How frequently to explain why they’re being emergency taxed? Or what the rate of statutory sick pay (SSP) is? If your journey has been like mine, your job really does apply in everyday life, both inside and outside of the office. I can provide several examples off the top of my head, but I have been asked so many more different questions around lots of different scenarios over the years. For example, my uncle was poorly over the festive period and asked me over Christmas dinner what the rate of SSP was, to make sure he was being paid correctly – yes, he asked me on Christmas Day! New starters joined my husband’s workplace and were unsure why they were being taxed so much. I suggested that if they hadn’t provided their P45s to their new employer, they should do this as soon as possible to allow their previous employment to be considered. My sister-in-law is self-
