Pension Scheme
Workplace pensions – what is this? To help all of us to save for our retirement, auto-enrolment was introduced by the government. This means employers are enrolling their employees into a workplace pension as an easy way to help them start saving for the future. Rendall and Rittner will be using The People’s Pension as our workplace pension scheme for auto-enrolment. What’s The People’s Pension? The People’s Pension is a multi-employer, defined contribution occupational pension scheme that has master trust status. It’s run by B&CE, a not-for-profit organisation. With no shareholders, any surpluses made by B&CE are used for the benefit of members. The People’s Pension has more than 4 million members, making it the UK’s largest private sector auto-enrolment pension scheme.
Am I going to be auto-enrolled? You will be auto-enrolled onto the pension scheme if, you’re •aged at least 22 but you’re under State Pension age •earning more than £10,000 a year (£833 a month or £192 a week) •not already an active member of a qualifying workplace pension scheme with us •working, or ordinarily working, in the UK (under The Pensions Regulator’s criteria) • When will I be auto-enrolled? If you meet the criteria, 3 months after your start date you will be automatically enrolled into our workplace pension scheme. We will write to you again once this happens. If you don’t meet the criteria, you won’t become a member of the scheme automatically but if in the future if you earn more than £192 per week (or £833 per month), or turn 22, we will enrol you into the scheme and let you know. Can I choose to join earlier? Can I join even if I won’t be auto- enrolled? Yes. As long as you’re aged between 16 and 75 you’re able to join The People’s Pension at any time.
Pension Scheme
How much will be paid into my pension? Once you’re in The People’s Pension, you’ll pay a minimum of 5% into your pension pot which we’ll deduct from your wages. Rendall & Rittner will also pay into your pension pot, contributing 3%. This means much more than just your own money will be going into your pension pot.
In addition you will benefit from valuable tax benefits from the government – so it’s not just you putting money towards your retirement.
What are the benefits of joining? More than half of UK adults who are planning on retiring, expect that their financial situation will not support their desired lifestyle in retirement.
So, having a workplace pension is more important than ever – it means that employers are helping their employees to save for their retirement.
Pension Scheme
And the great thing about a workplace pension is that it’s not just the employee who pays into a pension – the employer and the government contribute too. It’s extra ‘free’ money for the employee.
This money builds up in your personal pension pot and you can spend it when you retire, or any time after you reach 55 (the government proposes to increase this to age 57 from 2028).
I’ve changed jobs. How do I arrange for contributions to go into my pension pot? Your employer is responsible for enrolling you into the workplace pension scheme that they use. However, the provider may not be The People’s Pension. You’ll need to check with your new employer to find out when you’ll be enrolled and who the pension provider will be I’m a non-UK national. Do I have to be automatically enrolled? Automatic enrolment duties apply equally to a non-UK national as well as to a UK national, as long as the employee is working or ordinarily working in the UK If I’m going on long term sick, what will happen with my contributions? Will they continue and does my employer still have to pay? Contributions can continue to be paid into your pension pot based on the pay you’re actually receiving. If your sick leave is insured and a policy is paying out, then this will be classed as earnings if payments are being made by your employer.
Do I still pay contributions if I’m on maternity leave? You and your employer will continue to make pension contributions if you’re getting paid during maternity leave.
If you’re not getting paid, your employer still has to make pension contributions in the first 26 weeks of your leave (‘Ordinary Maternity Leave’). They have to carry on making contributions afterwards if it’s in your contract. Check your employer’s maternity policy if you’re unsure.
Pension Scheme
Do I still pay contributions if I’m on paternity leave? Contributions can continue to be paid into your pension pot.
The employer should pay the contributions based on your pay before you went on paternity leave, whilst you should pay contributions based on the pay that you’re actually receiving (for example Statutory Paternity Pay).

Life Assurance
myFamily
Whilst the majority of Rendall & Rittner’s company benefits are designed to directly benefit our employees, Rendall & Rittner is also aware of employees’ desire to support and provide for their families. The Company therefore provides a Life Assurance Scheme so that in the event of the death of an employee, benefits equivalent to 3 times salary will be paid to the employee’s beneficiaries. When will I be covered under the Life Assurance Scheme? You will be covered under the Life Assurance scheme from your first day of employment and whilst you remain employed by Rendall & Rittner up until the age of 75. Do I need to complete any forms? You will need to complete 2 copies of an Expression of Wish form. This form notifies the Trustees who you would like your death benefits payable to. It is imperative that you complete these forms as, if you don’t, you may not be covered under the Life Assurance Scheme Are there any tax implications? Life Assurance is not deemed by HMRC to be a Benefit In Kind and so your membership of this scheme will not be taxable. In the event of an employee’s death, the Trustees carefully consider the bequest details on your Expression of Wishes form. This arrangement means that the payment does not become part of your estate and so will not be subject to inheritance tax. No tax will be deducted from the lump sum payment unless the value of the lump sum benefit, combined with any relevant pension benefits, leads to a breach of the Lifetime Allowance. Will death benefits from the Life Assurance Scheme be tested against the Lifetime Allowance? If your total death benefits, i.e. Life Assurance, plus the value of any cash payments from current and previous pension arrangements are expected to exceed the Lifetime Allowance (£1.25 million from 6 April 2014, reducing to £1 million from 6 April 2016), any benefit above the lifetime allowance will be liable for a tax called the lifetime allowance charge (of 55%), unless any protections apply. A dependant’s pension would be taxable as earned income (if appropriate) in the hands of the recipient(s) and would not be tested against the Lifetime Allowance.
