JD'S HOUSE OF TROPHIES Recognizing Winners
As a finalist for the 2025 Enterprising Woman Intrapreneur Award and a nominee for Business Achievement at the 2025 EmBes: A Tribute to Women , Teisha Upward has been key in helping numerous organizations recognize employees, volunteers, leaders, and winners for over two decades at JD’s House of Trophies in Sioux Falls. In her current role as production director, she not only meets with customers to help design their items, but also can be found in the back of the warehouse fabricating many of the pieces with the variety of machines in the production department.
“I truly love what I do, but I’m not the business owner,” revealed Upward. “Being recognized as an intrapreneur acknowledges the leadership, creativity, and impact you can have within a business. It made me feel proud of the role I’ve played in helping JD’s grow and evolve.” After more than 50 years in business, JD’s House of Trophies entered a new chapter in 2022 when ownership transitioned to Nick and Kellee Blumer . While honoring the identity of JD’s, Nick assumed day-to-day leadership with a focus on strengthening systems, tools, and resources to support the team and sustain long-term growth.

“From an ownership perspective, culture and customer experience are top priorities. When the team feels supported, respected, and set up for success, that directly shows up in the quality of service we provide.” NICK BLUMER

New ownership came with a new logo, a remodel of the existing space, computerized work orders and a digital point of sale system, which— when combined—improved the overall efficiency and increased their production capacity. “We added three full time staff, boosted annual sales by more than $200,000, modernized operations with a CRM system, new production equipment, innovative workflows, and early testing of AI tools to support the business,” said Nick. For the Blumers, it’s been rewarding to see the hard work put into the business be recognized externally. In his first year of ownership, Nick and his team were awarded the 2022- 2023 Small Retail Business of the Year through the Awards and Personalization Association (APA) .

A couple years after Upward started at JD’s, she had the opportunity to go to the APA International Convention , where she not only learned about trends, skills, and services, but was offered a chance to continue education. After two years of course work, she earned her Certified Recognition Specialist (CRS) designation. “Earning my CRS designation was a profound moment, especially being recognized at the convention,” added Upward. “I’m currently the
only CRS in South Dakota, and am looking forward to continuing my education to become a Certified Recognition Master .” Upward continued, “As JD’s House of Trophies expands our current scope to include even more promotional items and apparel, I am also excited to start additional courses and work towards my BASI certification through the Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI) .” Upward says continuing education directly benefits customers, which is why she made it a priority.

“The Sioux Falls community has been incredibly supportive. After nearly 24 years at JD’s House of Trophies, I’ve had the privilege of working with many of the same schools, nonprofits, businesses, and organizations year after year.” TEISHA UPWARD

Nick recently graduated from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program. He says this gave him tools and perspective to make smarter decisions and grow responsibly, while staying true to the company's values and role within the community. It may come as a surprise to some, but JD’s House of Trophies doesn’t specialize in just trophies. Classic plaques, acrylic awards, and crystal pieces remain favorites for customers since they’re timeless, professional, and work well for schools, businesses, and organizations, Upward added. Her favorite projects continue to be custom pieces where a blank slate is the starting point. For Upward, “those one-of-a-kind awards always feel more meaningful.”

WHAT MAKES JD’S HOUSE OF TROPHIES STAND OUT? How much care goes into not just the order, but the people behind every order. Most of what JD’s House of Trophies creates represents someone’s hard work, service, or milestones. Time is taken to understand the story behind it, while making sure the final piece reflects that.

“Awards and recognition are still at the core of what we do, but we also support businesses and organizations with small office signage, professional nameplates, donor and recognition displays, and custom cast bronze or aluminum plaques for memorials and outdoor recognition,” added Upward. In addition to the awards, signage, and display items that JD’s has built their reputation on, branded items like corporate swag, custom hats, display pieces, flags, and table runners for events and trade shows have been increasingly popular with their current customers. Nick says JD’s House of Trophies has a long history of providing branded products and apparel, helping customers move beyond one-off awards to consistent recognition, events, and branding. Another thing JD’s prides itself on is their ability to do much of the fabrication in-house. Being able to use multiple decoration and personalization methods like laser engraving, sandblasting, sublimation, and UV printing allows them to work with their customers, ensuring the quality of the final pieces is top notch and produced in a timely manner.

“All of it ties back to helping organizations recognize people, build culture, and present their brand in a professional way,” added Upward. Helping others celebrate, whether it’s a student, employee, volunteer, or community leader, is both Upward’s and Nick’s favorite part about what they do. Recognition matters, Upward says. “Our goal is for every customer to leave feeling confident, taken care of, and genuinely excited about what they’ve ordered,” added Nick. “We want the experience of working with us to feel just as thoughtful and meaningful as the recognition piece itself.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT JDSHOUSEOF TROPHIES.COM+

Palmer had been running a social media management and web design business and kept running into issues with needing assets for projects. “I had been wanting to expand more into my web design offering, but I kept running into working with clients who didn’t have branding and/or no professional photography,” said Palmer. “And to build a great looking website those are two non-negotiables, so I wanted to partner up with someone who could offer those services and just create an all in-house offering.” Sherman was a fellow entrepreneur who was a graphic designer by trade and also ran a photography business. Palmer had her take family photos a handful of times, and she automatically came to mind as a potential partner.

The pair met up at Perch on a random Friday for Palmer’s proposal. “I approached Elle with my business idea of creating a design studio—her spearheading the creative side, and me running the business and web aspect of running a company,” she said. As the business concept was laid out, Sherman says she saw the puzzle pieces come together as her Type B personality didn’t enjoy the business side of things. “I’m very much a creative to my core,” she said. “And after that meeting, the rest was history! We teamed up and complemented each other so well.” Palmer describes the two as the perfect yin and yang. “It has been so much fun to have a partner to work with and bounce ideas off of,” she said. “Elle is the super creative dreamer, and I get to put the plan together and execute. It really plays into both of our individual strengths.” The partnership melded into what is now Good Co —a creative design and branding agency. Good Co’s mission is to work alongside business owners who care deeply about what they do and want their brand to reflect that. “We’re here to make the process feel exciting, approachable, and worth it,” said Palmer. “Good Co was born from the idea of providing large agency talent without the pretension or price tag.”

The company launched just last year and offers branding, web design, brand photography, and ongoing content creation. They create everything from full brand identities and custom websites to quarterly content shoots and social media visuals. “Our goal is to give businesses the tools to show up confidently and consistently,” said Sherman. “We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all; every package is built around where a business is now and where it’s headed.” The pair recently worked with B|Well Company to streamline their website across their multiple locations and multiple business branches. Good Co also just released an in- house project— The Content Kit — which offers clients a photoshoot and three months of social media posts.

“This will be great for businesses who are looking to have quality content to share online but don’t have the time or expertise to do it themselves,” said Palmer. Sherman says the most important thing to the team is to fully align with the client and work the process intentionally. “I value taking the time upfront to really understand the person or business behind the project—what they’re building, who they’re trying to reach, and how they want to feel showing up in the world,” she said. “When that foundation is clear everything else flows more naturally, and the end result feels honest, not forced.” Secondly, they value collaboration and trust. The pair says the best work happens when clients feel heard and are comfortable being part of the process, while also trusting them to guide the creative direction. Check out The Content Kit—a newly-launched, done- for-you content solution for business owners “who want to show up online without it taking over their lives.” The Content Kit pairs a custom photoshoot with three months of ready-to- post social content, all built around the client’s brand, their voice, and what they’re trying to grow. It’s made for businesses who know they need to be more visible online, but don’t have the time, team, or creative energy to keep up.
BUSINESS ISSUE february 2026
Lastly, Sherman says it’s important to also create work that’s both beautiful and functional. “We want the end result to not only look good, but to truly work for the client—whether that means helping them show up more confidently, tell their story more clearly, or grow their business in a meaningful way,” she said. With just a few months under their (creative) belts, the yin and yang of agencies have found a flow together.
“Working with Elle is seriously just the best,” said Palmer. “She is so creative, and I love her style and ideas. I think we both are very low maintenance, chill personalities that really work well together.” “Lucy keeps me in line and on time,” said Sherman. “I am just so grateful she thought I was cool enough to be her partner, and feel so lucky at how well our personalities and businesses meshed together—feels like we didn’t skip a beat!”

MORE THAN A MEETING Rapid City

“Rapid City is a world renown destination,” said Visit Rapid City’s director of sales Tyson Steiger . “There’s nowhere else that has the attractions and diverse landscape like the area in and around town.” Visitors from all over the world come to see the Black Hills, oftentimes for meetings and/or conferences. Just last year, meetings and conferences generated $5.41 million in economic impact. “This helps our local businesses, lowers our residential taxes, and provides the financial capabilities to help quality of life projects for our city,” said Steiger. From intimate board rooms to expansive ballrooms to state- of-the-art arenas, the area offers venues that fit many needs and wants. Meeting planners can find spaces as little as one meeting room at Aby’s Rapid City to Central States Fair & Rodeo , which one room can accommodate up to 118,000.
The largest non-annual conference hosted in Rapid City occurred with the 2021 FreedomFest Summit .
“The total number of attendees were approximately 2,800,” recalled Steiger. “They had room blocks at 14 hotels, which equaled a total room pick up of about 3,500 sleeping rooms and a direct economic impact to the local economy of roughly $1.5 million.” Speakers during this event included former South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem , actor Dennis Quaid , Dr. Drew Pinsky , Larry Elder , and more.

THE PROCESS 1. Visit Rapid City will provide meeting groups with a custom Rapid City bid packet upon request. The bid packet is emailed to meeting planners and appears like a website featuring all hotel and convention space options, their rates, and availability. 2. The visitors bureau can plan, schedule, and conduct a site visit with selection committees at any point their schedule allows. During site visits, Visit Rapid City tour selection committees to see all hosting options at hotels and conference centers, along with meeting with local delegates, view major attractions, and taste local cuisine. 3. They will help plan, connect, and provide complimentary services for groups, which include name tags, welcome packets, VIP gifts, airport welcome, registration assistance, attendance building, marketing materials, etc.
Steiger says having attendees and professionals from all over exposes them to Rapid City and the Black Hills, opening up the opportunity for them to invest in the area and/ or to relocate to town.

With Rapid City’s "big city" amenities and small-town charm, visitors can easily get to and from their host hotel or conference venue to anywhere within the area. If time permits, event attendees can see major attractions like Mount Rushmore National Memorial , Crazy Horse Memorial® , and Custer State Park . Hosting in the state in general has also proven to be affordable. In 2025, South Dakota was listed at #7 for budget-friendly trips by Dunhill Travel Deals . Rapid City has many free sights to experience like Dinosaur Park , Chapel in the Hills , and downtown’s City of President’s , Dahl Arts Center , or Art Alley —to name a few.
Meeting and conference attendees may also be in town for one of 150 events happening year-round at Main Street Square , which many are also free of charge. Seasonal activities at “The Square” create a community hub, with ice skating in winter and a splash pad in summer surrounded by shops and eateries. Steiger says he always suggests checking out Memorial Park outside of The Monument convention center. The “gem” is located within the downtown district. “Large convention groups use this area to start the day off with yoga in the park, a place for attendees to gain Vitamin D between sessions, or an access point through the very well landscaped promenade to the many lunch options surrounding The Monument,” said Steiger.
“IN ADDITION TO THE SIGHTS AND SCENIC BEAUTY, THE HISTORIC DOWNTOWN OF RAPID CITY IS FILLED WITH VARIOUS AMERICAN ERA ARCHITECTURE DESIGNS, A VIBRANT ART SCENE, FANTASTIC BOUTIQUES, EXQUISITE DINING AND ICONIC TOWN CENTER— MAIN STREET SQUARE.” Tyson Steiger

A very key amenity for meetings and conferences is coffee, he continued. “Meeting planners on a national scale pay between $60-$200 per gallon for coffee for their events,” said Steiger. “In Rapid City, a gallon of coffee at either a hotel or The Monument is around $30.” Each group has their own unique personality, and Steiger says it’s always enjoyable getting to learn their traits and help them experience the area to the level that works best for them. One group that stands out as a memory for Visit Rapid City is the 2016 International Twins Association Annual Convention . The event approached the visitors bureau to rally three community figures to help judge their Twins/Multiples Judging Contest .
CELEBRATE AMERICA250 Meeting attendees this year will receive a promo item in their welcome bags to commemorate being in the patriotic community of Rapid City for the nation’s 250th birthday—dubbed America250 . For locals and leisure travelers, Visit Rapid City is planning a Real America Birthday Bash July 2-4. Rapid City will be celebrating in the heart of downtown with a two-day festival filled with music, community and patriotic energy. On July 3 fireworks will return to Mount Rushmore.

“They had their participating attendees walk a catwalk with the panel of judges set up like you’d see on American Idol with an audience behind them, and they were judged on Most Alike and Most Unalike , amongst other prizes,” said Steiger. “It was a moment filled with laughter, fun, and comradery that truly embodied the value of why groups come together for conferences.” Visit Rapid City doesn’t take visitors for granted. Steiger says they’ve invested in training the hospitality industry through the Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) program. “This is a four-hour class that allows individuals to receive customer service training and knowledge about our destination,” he said. “Through this course, it allows them to be part of a nationally-recognized certification and be part of our local CTA network, which gives them email updates into new things happening in Rapid City, along with networking opportunities.” Looking back at last year’s success, the team is thrilled, but even more motivated. “On one hand, it’s very satisfying to know our work at Visit Rapid City has such a strong tangible outcome, and on the other hand, it makes us fired up to move forward and grow this number for 2026 and each year thereafter,” said Steiger.
