ISSUE 102 - APR/MAY 2024

LEAVING AN INSPIRING LEGACY IN THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY

Welcome to a packed April/May edition of Ireland’s Electrical Magazine, showcasing talent and expertise across the island of Ireland. From a new driving force behind Kew Electrical Belfast to ongoing success in securing high- profile M&E projects for Solutions in Dublin, the industry reflected in these pages is vibrant and forward facing. Net zero is unsurprisingly a common theme, with a few new firms focused on renewables recently entering the market including EWL Greentech in Dundalk and STIEBEL ELTRON in Blanchardstown. ECA offers guidance for calculating embodied carbon, an increasing demand from many clients and buyers, as well as calling on

Northern Ireland’s restored government to focus on net zero and skills initiatives with the region playing catch up to the Republic of Ireland. In this edition, we also remember three distinguished industry figures who have passed away over the last few months, RFE founder Reg Farrell, former CKI Chairman and MD Arnold Kammerling and Sammy Millar, who had a 51-year career with Walter S Mercer. As well as living into their 80s, the three are united in their positive impact on colleagues and creation of an inspiring legacy in the electrical industry. Alyson Magee

ECA Annual Dinner returns to the Culloden on April 19

Electricians and other installers in Northern Ireland are invited to contribute to industry and government efforts to ‘raise the bar’ on individual competence within the built environment in the UK. Input is sought by the Engineering and Building Services Skills Authority (EBSSA) to begin codifying standards and competences for the sector, in line with a new post-Grenfell competence regime established by the Building Safety Act. EBSSA formally launched an Engineering Services Super Sector entity charged with overseeing progress EBSSA seeking input to codify competences and standards

A popular event in

the annual social calendar of the

Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) is set to return to the Culloden Estate and Spa on April 19. The ECA Annual Dinner 2024 will be hosted by industry favourite Adrian Logan, with entertainment to be provided by comedian Andrew Ryan.

A more relaxed approach this year will see its previous black tie dress code dropped in favour of business attire including suits and ties. ECA is the main trade association for companies involved in electrotechnical and other technical engineering projects, operating regional branches in Northern Ireland, England and Wales. It is also represented in the Republic of Ireland

as part of the Construction Industry Federation. ECA’s Annual Dinner offers networking opportunities with leading manufacturers, distributors and key industry figures from across the electrotechnical and engineering services sector. disciplines at a meeting co-hosted with the Construction Leadership Council on January 29. Convened last year by Actuate UK members and other leading sector bodies including BEAMA, CIPHE, TICA and MCS, EBSSA aims to provide a credible authoritative voice for skills across all engineering and building services. Key objectives include providing data- based analysis of sector skills demand and supply, and identifying measurable interventions to close skills shortage gaps. Underpinning the work is a shared commitment to the UK’s net zero targets within both domestic and non- domestic buildings. www.actuateuk.org.uk/resources/ebssa/

NICEIC adds Experienced Worker Assessment to training portfolio

UK building services certification body NICEIC has added the Installation Electrician Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) to its training portfolio. This industry-approved pathway offers experienced electricians who might not have completed an apprenticeship or secured a Level 3 vocational qualification (or equivalent) a formal means to validate their competence and industry experience. Candidates applying to undertake the Installation Electrician EWA must have at least five years’ proven experience working as an electrician (excluding any time spent in training) and must hold a Level 2 electrical qualification. Achievement of the EWA, and its endpoint assessment, is recognised in the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification as equivalent to an industry

apprenticeship and meets the application criteria for electrical certification bodies such as NICEIC. The assessment also meets the requirements for an Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) gold card. As part of the process, candidates must compile a portfolio of work and undertake practical assessments. On completion of this phase, participants will be required to pass an AM2E assessment, which mirrors the AM2S assessment taken by apprentices at the end of their training. www.niceic.com/training/ewa

LIGHTING

THE NEW INCEPTOR MILLI DIMMABLE, FIXED, FIRE-RATED LED DOWNLIGHT IS SMALL AND COMPACT IN NAME AND FORMAT BUT PACKS A HUGE PUNCH IN FEATURES AND BENEFITS… Ovia switches up its downlight offer

Now in its fifth year of trading as an independent lighting company, Ovia has established itself as a leading player in the lighting sector. With Issue 5 of the Ovia catalogue just released into circulation, Managing Director Mike Collins shines a light on one of the new light fittings he believes will be a star performer for the company this year.

Small and compact in name and format but packing a huge punch when it comes to features and benefits is the new Inceptor Milli dimmable, fixed, fire- rated LED downlight. Designed to complement the range of downlight solutions already offered by Ovia, Inceptor Milli is aimed predominantly at the domestic market. It combines style and functionality to provide installers with a downlight that is quick and easy to fit and offers a range of features at the flick of a switch. Standard or baffle Inceptor Milli is an IP65-rated downlight available in both standard/fixed and baffle versions. The standard version provides a 60° beam angle, while the baffle provides a more focused 25° angle. The baffle design ensures a more concentrated and directional illumination, making it an ideal choice for highlighting specific areas. The baffle is offered in a choice of white or black. Five bezel finishes are available, with a range of White, Black, Chrome, Satin

Chrome and Antique Brass finishes available. With the standard version, you simply order the finish of your choice as a fixed finish. The baffle version is supplied with a white bezel, but this can be interchanged with any of the other finishes which are purchased separately. Simply twist the existing bezel to remove and replace with the colour option of your choice. For a fresh new look in the future, it is simply a case of replacing the bezels with an alternative finish. Switching it up A key feature to highlight with the Milli downlight is the element of control offered in this one fitting. There is an option to seamlessly switch between 6.4W and 4W power outputs using a single switch to provide users with unprecedented control over their lighting environments. Ability also exists to easily switch the colour temperatures between 2700K (Warm White), 4000K (Cool White) and 6500K (Daylight). This allows

“Whether seeking a vibrant, well-lit atmosphere or a more subdued, energy-conscious ambiance, the Inceptor Milli ensures optimal flexibility.”

for effortless adaptation to varying lighting needs and makes is easy for the end-user to tailor their lighting to suit their individual requirements. Whether seeking a vibrant, well-lit atmosphere or a more subdued, energy-conscious ambiance, the Inceptor Milli ensures optimal flexibility. Rotatable insulation cover One feature setting the Inceptor Milli apart from many downlights on the market is the insulation cover which introduces a practical solution for installation challenges. The rotatable insulation cover allows installation of the downlights safely under insulation but also adjustment of the cover to allow for 5mm extra clearance. On the standard/fixed Milli downlight, the insulation cover can be twisted to the up and down position and still fit in a 60mm void. The baffle version can only fit in a 60mm void when the insulation cover is down, and the plasterboard is a minimum thickness of 12.5cm. By accommodating insulation materials more effectively, the Inceptor Milli ensures optimal performance. Unrestricted airflow around the fixture helps manage heat dissipation, contributing to the longevity and efficiency of the downlight. Our downlights are fire rated to 30, 60 and 90 minutes and also feature an Intumescent Strip which, when exposed

to fire, expands to seal the gap between the light fitting and plasterboard. Fast-fit connection All Inceptor Milli downlights are supplied pre-wired with a fast-fit, 3-pole and loop flow connector, and Ovia also provides a loose push-fit flow connector in the box which ensures a quick and easy installation process. Broad cut-out range

repairing and recycling mentality. Sustainability drives all the

decisions and actions made at Ovia. The business is committed to contributing to the transition to a circular economy and the aim is to make Ovia the market leader in sustainable lighting. TM66 Assured Product Verification Scheme Ovia is working towards its Inceptor luminaires scoring highly on the TM66 Assured

The Inceptor Milli has a broad cut-out range of 64mm to 75mm, which allows the downlights to be installed in a wide range of existing ceiling downlight cut- outs. Multi-pack With the aim of providing a practical and cost-effective solution for a comprehensive range of lighting projects, Inceptor Milli is available in a convenient 10-pack box as well as in singles. Sustainable Inceptor The industry is currently evolving from a linear to a circular economy, and this will only intensify in the coming months and years. The emphasis is on reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill by embracing a re-using, remaking/

Product Verification Scheme. This scheme is an innovative initiative developed and fulfilled by the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and endorsed by CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers), and its aim is to advance circular economy practices within the lighting industry. Inceptor products have been tested and scored very well on the TM66 Circularity Report. Testing involves the gathering of thorough evidence to support the specifications of the product range. Ovia uses the LIA to verify its TM66 results and ensure it has a consistent and accurate rating. Ovia is a proud advocate of TM66 and has been given the opportunity to be a founding partner, demonstrating its commitment to a circular economy for the industry.

COVER STORY

Flame protection is built into the fibre of all work garments from Snickers Workwear.

Professionals working in high-risk environments rely on high-performing protective clothing from Snickers Workwear.

Standards and requirements dictate design Snickers Workwear’s product development always starts with the item’s intended use and the task at hand. What are the risks in the work environment? What do the standards require? And what does the wearer need in order to perform optimally? Working based on these facts and requirements, and by conducting thorough tests throughout the entire process, the team can develop functional, comfortable and, above all, safe personal protective equipment. “This collection of protective wear is the result of a long and successful partnership with professionals working in the energy and railway sectors.”

is a cutting-edge collection that offers inherent heat and flame protection, excellent durability, great comfort and an ergonomic, modern fit. This range of protective wear is the result of a long and successful partnership with professionals working in the energy and railway sectors. They are the ones working in high-risk environments, and the only ones who truly know how protective wear is used and functions in the real world. This close partnership has resulted in several innovative features, such as symmetrical leg pockets and DuPont™Kevlar® reinforced pockets. 100% inherent protective wear Snickers Workwear’s mission is to provide clothing that protects against burns. All fabrics are therefore inherent, meaning that the flame protection is built into the fibre. The main inherent fibre is modacrylic, which combines high flame retardancy with low density. This means that the protective garments can be built with relatively lightweight

materials, offering comfort and freedom of movement for the wearer. In addition, modacrylic provides good protection against electric arc. Ergonomics is also a very important aspect when Snickers Workwear develops its protective wear. Garments that provide great fit and optimal mobility tend to be used more often, contributing to increased protection, greater comfort and enhanced efficiency. Layer up One of the best ways to improve your level of protection is to wear layers (all layers/garments must of course be certified and flame retardant). The main benefit of wearing layers is that the air gap formed between different garments provides increased protection. There is no general rating for how much increased protection the air gap between layers provides, although Snickers Workwear has conducted a number of tests that show that the air gap increases protection by more than 5 cal/cm 2 .

WORKWEAR

MASCOT WORKWEAR, A SUPPLIER OF INNOVATIVE AND LONG-LASTING WORKWEAR, IS INTEGRATING CIRCULARITY INTO ITS MANUFACTURING BY USING RECYCLED MATERIALS…

MASCOT® CUSTOMIZED workwear is light and comfortable like sportswear, innovative and durable like workwear and has the highest possible proportion of recycled materials. It is designed to be even lighter, even stronger, and to have even more stretch. High quality and durability are central to MASCOT CUSTOMIZED. MASCOT developed its range not only for tradespeople but in collaboration with A focus on high quality and durability

tradespeople to ensure it is truly tested to work. The range was developed to be extremely long-lasting and made from a high percentage of recycled materials, especially in the main material. With a considerable number of products, types and colours on offer, it’s possible to put together a personal look that is not only comfortable to work in throughout the day but also extremely strong, lightweight, hardwearing and water-repellent. Recycled material – a natural part of the process The production of workwear inevitably leaves an environmental footprint along the value chain. MASCOT is working on integrating circularity into the development and production of products by utilising recycled materials. Using recycled materials in its products reduces overall consumption and

reliance on new resources. By the end of 2025, MASCOT will phase out all use of virgin polyester and polyamide in every product. It is an ambitious decision, and MASCOT will be among the first in the industry to take this giant step. The MASCOT CUSTOMIZED range contains workwear made from recycled materials that have an extremely high wear resistance. It includes trousers and upper-body garments featuring primary material made from recycled polyamide, which comes from surplus materials from textile production. This does not mean that used clothes have been turned into new material. It is a case of surplus materials from the textile production process, such as face material, yarn and similar, being recycled into new fabric. All recycled materials are from certified sources, either Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) or the Global Recycled Standard (GRS). Many of the products in the MASCOT

WORKWEAR

CUSTOMIZED range are also made from recycled polyester. This recycled polyester comes from recycled plastic material, eg used plastic bottles, which are broken down and used again, or other plastic materials that are broken down to a granule and reused as a new resource. Long-wearing is key Apart from creating workwear that considers recycling, a second way to consider the environmental impact is to create long-lasting products. This is why high quality and durability are central to MASCOT CUSTOMIZED. Workwear is exposed to many elements and surfaces throughout a working day. Therefore, it is important to have a guarantee that it will last. The materials used in the range have undergone extensive testing at MASCOT-owned laboratories before being put into production. Additionally, MASCOT has test users

who test the finished products in everyday working environments to ensure that the range is truly fit for purpose. Collaborating with the people who spend all day in workwear ensures MASCOT CUSTOMIZED can withstand the wear and tear and ensures wearer satisfaction. One of the test users, electrician Mikkel, said, “I can squat down, work on my knees or climb a scaffold without difficulty because the material has so much stretch. The flexibility is clearly a big reason to choose these trousers.” Holster pockets for all professions Having your tools at the right time and in the right place is always an important consideration. Holster pockets can serve as your toolbox when you work in places where you cannot have a full one. MASCOT CUSTOMIZED has taken account of this important accessory and

created several types to suit various professions. You will find holster pockets specifically developed for electricians. They are made with CORDURA, which is 10 times stronger than cotton, three times stronger than standard polyester, and twice as strong as standard nylon. CORDURA helps the holster pockets last longer while securing the heavy and sharp objects they hold. MASCOT’s unique Click Pocket System is a new and innovative way to ensure holster pockets stay in place in your preferred position. By having removable holster pockets, the lifespan of the trousers increases. Gone are the days of throwing away the trousers due to the pockets being worn out. Now you can change your pockets or trousers when needed. Place the pockets where you prefer with a simple click, and you can also decide how many you use in any given work situation.

New Klauke EKWF120ML crimping tool launched AN OPTIMUM SOLUTION FOR OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGE OF CRIMPING A WHOLE RANGE OF CABLES...

The newly developed battery-powered hydraulic crimping tool, EKWF120ML from Klauke, will simplify your work and simultaneously ensure optimum crimping quality. Using a square-cam mechanism, the EKWF120ML crimps both DIN-compliant wire ferrules as well as insulated wire ferrules. The square mechanism adjusts flexibly to the respective cable end sleeve, making the use of interchangeable crimping dies unnecessary. In addition, precision-fit crimping using comb-shaped jaws provides optimised distribution of forces and embeds the conductor in a corrugated shape. This ensures perfect working results over the entire range of wire ferrule shapes. All cross sections from six to 120mm² can be crimped using the EKWF120ML. A wire ferrule length of 32mm only requires one crimping action, meaning most wire

ferrules can be crimped in the cross-section range in just a single step. This optimum solution has been developed for overcoming the challenge of crimping the entire range of cables encountered in control cabinet construction and mechanical engineering. The flexible type of crimping using the comb-shaped jaws ensures optimum results even with the use of old

cables, providing a uniform solution for a wide range of conductors. For more information or to request demonstrations, contact: T - +44 (0) 1986 891 519 E: klauke-sales@emerson.com www.klauke.com

At Ennis Safety Wear, we not only understand the importance of this distinction, but we are also experts in providing specialised guidance for workwear products tailored to various workplace needs. • Anti-Static (ISO 1149): In environments where electrostatic discharges can pose a risk, such as in the electronics or chemical industry, it is crucial to have anti-static garments that comply with ISO 1149. These garments are designed to safely dissipate static electricity, thus reducing the risk of damage to sensitive equipment or personal accidents. • Flame Resistant (ISO 11612): For jobs where there is a risk of exposure to

fire or high temperatures, such as in the petrochemical industry or construction, flame-resistant garments that comply with ISO 11612 are essential. • Arc Flash Protection (IEC 61482): In environments where high-voltage electrical equipment is handled, such as power plants or industrial facilities, garments with protection against arc flash that comply with IEC 61482 are essential. • High-Visibility (Hi-Vis) (ISO 20471): In outdoor work or low-visibility environments, such as road construction or traffic safety, high-visibility garments that comply with ISO 20471 are fundamental to ensuring workers’ safety. • Waterproof (ISO 22654): In outdoor work conditions where rain or moisture is common, having waterproof garments that comply with ISO 22654 is essential to keep workers dry and comfortable. At Ennis Safety Wear, we understand

the importance of selecting the right type of workwear for each workplace environment. Our team of experts is here to provide you with the necessary guidance and help you choose the garments that best suit your specific needs. With Ennis Safety Wear, you can rest assured that you are effectively protecting your employees, complying with all relevant regulations and standards. NEWS

Irish electric vehicle (EV) sales are stalling, according to new figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), which is calling for government and industry action. While total new car registrations rose by 25% in February, EV sales fell by 15.5% year on year to 1,866 cars. For the first two months of the year, EV sales rose by only 1.4% to 5,968 vehicles, underperforming a 18.3% hike in the total market. Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General, said, “This slowing down in EV sales is not unique to Ireland and is reflective of other new car markets. It is typical of the life cycle in the adaption of any new technology, where there is a gap between early adapters and the early majority consumers. “To speed up the move to EVs in the wider motoring public, the industry and government must keep working together. For the industry, this means the rolling out of more EV models. For government, it means extending incentives and investing in the national charging infrastructure.” Call for EV sector support as sales flatline in Republic of Ireland

An additional £120m has been allocated in the Spring Budget to build supply chains for offshore wind and carbon capture and storage.

Support for green energy welcomed in Chancellor’s Spring Budget

Allocation of an additional £120m to build supply chains for offshore wind and carbon capture and storage has been welcomed by the electrical industry in Northern Ireland. With offshore wind regarded as a key contributor to electrification and the UK meeting its net zero targets, the Spring Budget announcement has been applauded by engineering and electrotechnical services trade body ECA. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt included the additional funding in his Budget for Long- Term Growth announced on March 6. Also welcomed were an increase in the

threshold for payment of VAT to a turnover of £90,000, potentially benefitting the three-quarters of electrical contractors who are SMEs, and a freeze on fuel duty. However, concern was expressed over funds directed for infrastructure projects under the levelling up agenda. Jane Dawson, ECA Head of Public Relations and Public Affairs, said, “We are concerned this will benefit members in some regions, while others will lose out. This could create a postcode lottery of demand for electrical contractors, which does not necessary reflect the workforce available.”

Northern Ireland losing out on renewables investment and capital

Creation of a renewable energy support scheme (RESS) should

be among immediate priorities for Northern Ireland’s restored government, according to the Electricity Association of Ireland (EAI). The representative body for the island of Ireland’s Single Electricity Market

by the DfE with KPMG investigating a range of rollout scenarios. This cost-benefit analysis illustrated that the rapid rollout

scenario aiming to be completed by 2027 is the optimal option. “Clearly, Economy Minister Conor Murphy will have to also act rapidly or risk endangering NI’s ability to deliver active demand side management.” As the Celtic Interconnector between France and SEM progresses, EAI also highlighted concerns over potential Windsor Framework issues regarding reintegration of the SEM with EU electricity markets.

(SEM), EAI said the absence of such a scheme has caused prospective investment and capital to be diverted away from NI into RoI or GB. While the NI Department for the Economy (DfE) has previously consulted on a RESS, progress collapsed alongside Stormont and the region has fallen behind in delivering key infrastructure such as smart metering.

ROOM2 HOMETEL BELFAST

THE POWER BEHIND A UNIQUE ECO ‘HOMETEL’ CONCEPT

HAUGHEY ELECTRICAL DELIVERS A FULL ELECTRICAL PACKAGE FOR NORTHERN IRELAND’S FIRST ‘HOMETEL’ PROJECT, INCLUDING SYSTEMS AIMED AT REDUCING THE BUILDING’S CARBON FOOTPRINT OVER ITS LIFETIME…

Co-ordinating with multiple trades on site, Haughey Electrical fulfilled a fast- track programme to deliver a complete electrical installation for Northern Ireland’s first ‘hometel’ project. It was brought on board by main contractor Ganson for the new room2 hometel Belfast, a variation of the aparthotel concept evoking home comforts and developed by Oakland Holdings for room2 brand owner, the Lamington Group. Opened in October 2023, room2 Belfast features 175 rooms – most with kitchenettes – and a café, tearoom, restaurant, lounge, bar, meeting and event spaces and gym over nine floors. The fourth and largest room2 property, and its first outside England, the Belfast

site represents a total investment of £20m by the eco-conscious real estate company. With sustainability a major focus for the Lamington Group, room2 Belfast is powered only by electric, part generated from solar energy, operates a zero waste- to-landfill policy and is aiming to become net zero by 2030. A sister location in Chiswick lays claim as the world’s first net- zero hotel. The site was previously occupied by the Audio Times Building, later known as Lyndon Court, a three-storey structure of retail units and office space designed by Barrie Todd Associates and built over 1986 to 1987. After redevelopment attempts by another firm failed to come to fruition, Oakland Holdings submitted a successful planning

application to demolish Lyndon Court and develop an aparthotel with bar, restaurant and conferencing facilities in 2019. room2 then secured a 25-year lease with a tenant option to break at year 20, and Lyndon Court was demolished in 2020. Ganson commenced site-enabling works in August 2021. The building was designed to the Lamington Group’s specification, with the lease agreement contingent on the developer securing planning permission, building control approval and a minimum BREEAM rating of Very Good. M&E works are operated from plant space in the basement. The electrical installation by Haughey Electrical included supplying metal containment,

small power, data, TV, lighting, fire detection, CCTV, access, intruder, PA, AV, lightning protection, photovoltaic (PV) panels and a generator. As well as the PV panels, allowing the building to run on low carbon renewable energy, systems installed to reduce the carbon footprint of the building over its lifecycle included intelligent lighting control systems. The hometel’s 0.09-hectare city centre site offered its own challenges including restricted space necessitating off-site storage. Deliveries to the busy location fronting onto Queen and College streets required strategic planning. Jimmy Haughey, Director of Haughey Electrical, said, “With restricted access and limited storage, Haughey Electrical had to plan and manage effective just- in-time delivery schedules. “Working to a fast-track programme with multiple trades on site, we were able to depend on our large directly employed workforce along with specialist subcontractors to meet the strict deadlines.” Ganson’s strong relationships and open

communication with the entire project team contributed to delivery of a high- quality project on time. “Regular site meetings allowed Haughey Electrical to be responsive, efficient and maintain project schedules and costs,” said Jimmy. “Haughey Electrical is pleased to have been involved in a project that is environmentally conscious and looks forward to seeing its success in the hospitality industry in Belfast.” Established in 1960, Haughey Electrical is a family business which has expanded from a sole trader to employing around 70 skilled members of staff. It offers professional, domestic, commercial and industrial electrical services across a wide range of sectors including commercial, education, hospitality and leisure, ecclesiastical and health care. Among previous projects for the firm are the Ulster University School of Medicine in Londonderry/Derry, Sandy Bay Centenary Pavilion in Larne, The Rabbit Hotel & Retreat in Templepatrick and Montalto Medical Centre in Ballynahinch.
