MIGHT Annual Report 2024

Assessments, Barriers and Enablers to Foment the Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels in the Southeast 20 December 2024

Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC) completed a project titled “Assessments, Barriers and Enablers to Foment the Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels in the Southeast Asian Region” with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to explore Southeast Asia's potential in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The study highlighted that underutilised low-carbon land (abandoned land with poor soil) could help grow energy crops for biofuel and food. This is important for Malaysia, which may not have enough waste-based feedstocks to meet future SAF demands, especially for a 70% SAF blend by 2050. The findings indicate that policymakers should focus on optimising resource utilisation, facilitating cross- border feedstock trade, and encouraging foreign investment. This project's outcomes were documented in the report “Sustainable Aviation Fuels in Southeast Asia: A Regional Perspective on Bio-Based Solutions.” AMIC’s collaborative research and technology initiatives align with MIGHT’s mission to drive innovation and sustainability in Malaysia’s aerospace sector.
