LZ Livestock - Kip and Riley Zoss-Littau, Letcher, SD
We are extremely excited to welcome you to the Inaugural Functional by Design Sale. We are the newest breeders amongst the three consignors and are honored to be showcased alongside two breeders that have been a part of our foundation. Over the last 5 years we have learned so much from both the Jungs and the Danas that we owe much of our success to their mentorship. Over the last year or two we have had many conversations about bringing functionality back to the Boer goat for production oriented breeders, something we all agreed was becoming hard to find. You will see that all three of our operations have their roots in the cattle industry first and then we each found our way into meat goats. I think that is one unique and powerful aspect in not only the way we breed goats, but also how we provide customer service. We hope this sale is the start of something impactful for the meat goat industry as we strive to offer genetics that will work in most all environments and support the production oriented breeders with functional genetics that will help make them more profitable!
Double D Boer Goats - Lee and Sharon Dana, Clay Center, Nebraska
Twenty years ago, Sharon and I established Double D Boer Goats. We have been fortunate enough to have met a lot of good people, and made some great friends. We have been privileged to have learned from some of the very best that were involved with the importing of these goats from South Africa. Just to name a couple are Don Smith, a man that owned Boer goats in another country before they were imported into the United States. He knew how they could
improve the goats he was raising on his ranch. Coni Ross was raised on a ranch that included Angora goats. Her knowledge about what traits were important and how to keep goats healthy were second to none. We could list many, many more. We have been blessed with many accomplishments in the show ring, including at the national level with three home raised National Champions. A few years back we were returning from a sale we were consignors in and we were discussing the sale offering and what we had seen and experienced over the years. We decided we wanted to emphasize some of the traits we started with from the very first goats we purchased. Does that breed in a timely manner then lay down five months later and deliver kids with little to no assistance. We have always paid close attention to the vigor of kids between sire groups. A couple years ago we made the tough decision to cull any doe that had birthing issues. We lost some good does, but not as many as we feared. The does we are offering were all born unassisted, which is our first criteria. Second, is their phenotype, we like good looking goats that are structurally sound. Third, we are working hard to breed goats with good feet that need trimming no more than once a year. The sire to most of the sale offering has some of the best feet we have ever seen. His mother also has great feet! We believe these yearling does can have a positive impact on a lot of herds. Most are only one generation from show ring look. They are in terrific breeding condition, so could be bred once they are acclimated to your operation!
Lazy J Bar Ranch - John and Stephanie Jung, Mina, SD
Our family's livestock journey began in the commercial cattle industry, where we learned firsthand the importance of sound
genetics, hard work, and building a reputation founded on honesty and integrity. Over time, that foundation grew into a seedstock Red Angus operation, further strengthening our commitment to producing functional, high-quality livestock with lasting value. Steph first became interested in Boer goats after seeing them for the first time in 2003, and that early interest eventually grew into a passion for the breed. In 2010, we expanded into the Boer goat business, bringing the same dedication to quality breeding stock and long-term sustainability that has guided our ranch for generations. What started out as a way to diversify quickly become another passion to produce meat goats to the best of our ability that fit our available resources. At Lazy J Bar Ranch, we believe successful livestock must be more than eye-catching—they must be functional, productive, and capable of making a lasting impact on a breeding program. The consignments we offer in the Functional by Design Sale represent careful breeding decisions focused on structural correctness, maternal strength, performance, and longevity. While we enjoy the show ring and the opportunities it creates for young people and families, our focus has always remained on producing breeding livestock that excel in the pasture and contribute to future generations. We are proud to offer a set of young bucks that reflect the values our family stands behind every day and are grateful for the friendships, customers, and fellow breeders who have been part of our journey the last 16 years.
