Contractor classification remains the most under-governed area of all. One Australian RegTech provider reviewed over $70 billion in wages across more than 100 remediation projects and found some level of non-compliance in every single client. Not most. Every one. PAYG, super, and payroll tax each apply different rules to the same engagement. Automation can’t navigate that without the right classification logic sitting behind it. Will AI Take Payroll Jobs? This is the question I get asked most. And I think it’s the wrong question. The argument for replacement goes like this: if AI can classify, reconcile, and explain, what does a payroll professional actually do? It’s a fair challenge on the surface. But here’s what I’ve observed. The organisations that have introduced AI into their payroll and employment tax function haven’t reduced headcount. They’ve redirected it. The people who used to spend three days rebuilding the same reconciliation explanation are now spending that time reviewing AI-generated output, escalating genuine risk, and building better controls.

That shift matters more than people give it credit for. Payroll errors rarely stay contained. One Australian legal firm noted that a single misclassification can affect an entire workforce, compounding every pay cycle until someone catches it. The cost of that isn’t just financial. It’s reputational. And it lands on the desk of whoever owns the function. AI doesn’t remove that accountability. What it does is give the people who carry it better tools to discharge it. The market evidence points the same way. The 2026 State of Payroll Compliance Report found 57% of organisations plan to implement automated payroll review technology. That’s not a signal of a workforce being replaced. It’s a signal of a workforce that knows the
