CEO REPORT

The new XE range – which will eventually comprise four models with payloads between eight and 12 tonnes – boasts an efficient, modern power-train and continuously variable transmission (CVT) that reduces fuel consumption by 35 per cent while lowering CO2 emissions. Early reports of the new 982 XE are that it’s much smoother and quieter than previous models, which has all sorts of operator safety benefits, as well as being a much more efficient machine. At the same time, Terra Cat is preparing for an exciting opportunity to support KiwiRail’s new fleet of Stadler locomotives that have begun arriving from Spain. Each locomotive runs a Cat C175-16 engine rated at 3000hp, while some new, innovative hybrid- diesel shunt locomotives have been confirmed, that will have Cat C13B engines installed. We’ll be assisting KiwiRail with the product support coverage for these engines. Both the C175-16 and C13B will have the highest level of emissions reduction technology installed also. We’re excited for what the future holds across all the industries we work in, and Terra Cat will continue to provide the best support possible to our customers across the construction, forestry, resource and power systems industries. On behalf of the entire Terra team, we wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

Hi there everyone. The first half of the 2024-2025 financial year has been a tough one for many of our customers, particularly those in the construction industry. However, with falling interest rates, a pipeline of fast-tracked infrastructure projects being confirmed by the government, and a number of our other main industries holding up well, there’s a general feeling that things are starting to improve. This improving climate should also coincide neatly with some exciting new Caterpillar models arriving on New Zealand shores early next year, including the revolutionary new medium-sized wheel loaders, and some new Weiler forestry wheel skidders and track feller bunchers. On a recent trip to Weiler in the USA, a number of customers and our forestry management were honoured to get an up-close look at the first of the new generation wheel skidders, the S340, which will fit in between Weiler’s S250 and S450 models. The new S340 is a full hydrostatic skidder that’s been designed to with operator comfort, productivity and ease of service in mind. The cab has been redesigned, with plenty of room and a full turnaround seat. A lot of thought has also gone into the design around serviceability, and the tilting cab provides enhanced access for Cat technicians to maintain and service the machine. Terra has committed to ordering some of these new skidders, which we expect to start arriving towards the end of Q1 2025. There’s also excitement building around a new Cat 982 XE wheel loader that Terra Cat will start bringing into the country around the middle of next year.

TOP TECH BRENTON PAGE HEADED FOR SPAIN!

It’s official: Terra Cat field service tech Brenton Page is heading to Spain to compete against some of the world’s best Caterpillar technicians. The 34-year-old from Tauranga finished on the podium at the inaugural Caterpillar Top Tech Competition in Melbourne in August, where he went up against nine of the best Cat techs in the Asia-Pacific. In an extremely tight comp, Brenton proved he’s up there with the very best, finishing third after the gruelling five-day contest that tested the competitors with a range of technical problems they’re likely to encounter in the real world. “I was both nervous and excited about Melbourne; there were some mixed emotions,” Brenton admits. “It was cool to see how Cat organises and designs their version of the Top Tech competition. Terra does some awesome things, so it was good to see how other techs interpret and approach the contest.” The Melbourne event was the first regional round of the new Top Tech Competition, meaning he now has until November next year to keep honing his skills before he heads to Malaga, Spain.

If he’s successful there, Brenton will then head to Vegas to take on the world’s best at the grand final at ConExpo in March 2026. Brenton was first encouraged to take part in last year’s Top Tech comp, and jumped at the opportunity to upskill and extend himself both personally and professionally. As well as the usual technical aspects, he also had to conduct an online presentation, which was something outside of this comfort zone. This year’s competition was different again, ensuring that he’ll be as prepared as possible for whatever gets thrown his way at Melbourne. “The Learning and Development team did a good job of mixing things up the past two years,” he says. “This year’s Top Tech contest was just as fun and challenging and there were still time-restricted challenges where you had to diagnose an issue, role-play customer interactions, conduct your pause-and-thinks and so on.” “While the two comps have been loosely based off the Dealer Top Apprentice contests, Spain is a completely new competition for Cat and no-one knows what it’ll look like. That’s both exciting and a bit scary,” he laughs. Brenton is one of three heavy diesel field service techs at the Tauranga depot, which reports to Rotorua branch. In his spare time, he and his fiancée work on their house that they’ve relocated onto a section at Oropi, south of Tauranga, while Brenton also spends plenty of hours tinkering away on cars and vehicles. A huge congratulations, Brenton! You did us all proud!

Golden Bay has snapped up the first two Cat 350 excavators that Terra Cat has released in New Zealand, and the machines are already proving their worth in productivity, fuel efficiency, safety and comfort. Golden Bay is a Kiwi institution, providing a range of cements since the late 1880s. Over the past century, it has maintained its commitment to producing a high-quality product. These days, Golden Bay focuses on providing New Zealand’s lowest carbon GP cement and is committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 30 per cent by 2030. Naturally, that means the gear they use needs to be at the cutting edge of sustainability, economical but highly productive, and comfortable to operate. So, when the company needed to upgrade a couple of diggers in its quarry in Hikurangi, Northland, it opted to buy two Cat 350 large excavators. “This is a new model for Terra Cat,” says industry manager Tim O’Meara. “It is specifically designed for quarry applications and is ideal for jobs like truck loading. Better yet, for Golden Bay, they are the ideal size for their application – not too big and not too small.” One 350 has been fitted with a rock breaker and is tasked with smashing the drilled and blasted limestone into smaller rocks, to a maximum size of around 300mm. The second machine spends its time loading these rocks onto trucks, for transport to Golden Bay’s manufacturing plant in Portland, south of Wha- ngarei. “These machines are fuel efficient, and productive. In fact, our two-year Fuel Edge guarantee says they won’t burn more than 32 litres of fuel per hour. This is very efficient. If they do run the machines really hard and go over that, we will give them a parts and service credit.” Tim says they’re able to calculate the C0 2 outputs of the machines by looking at the fuel use and

Golden Bay quarry manager Michael Mead confirms that the 350's fuel consumption is really low, and as far as the operators are concerned, safety and comfort is high. “Operator ergonomics are a big thing – the guys are in the cab for eight hours a day,” he says. “I was talking to one of our operators and he says, in his 25 years in quarrying, the 350 is the best cab he’s had for comfort. He loves the ability to configure the controls and is stoked with the mass power output – he says it’s got ample power to do the job.” “Safety on site is a big priority for us, and these machines are next level. They have red and green safety lights to alert people whether the machine is in use or stopped, which gives the person approaching the machine confidence the operator knows they’re there.” “The other safety feature that’s great is that you can set the swing limit, which is great for operating in tighter areas.” “We also really like that you can do all the machine pre- starts off the ground – it’s simply safer for the operator.” Michael says the two new Cat excavators also have VisionLink, the Terra Cat fleet management software, to manage the prestart and any issues that may come up. “It sends me all the data about the machine – all the telemetrics including fuel use, operating hours, and overall utilisation. I can access this on my phone or laptop, at home or in town or anywhere.” As part of the deal with Terra Cat, Golden Bay has a 10,000-hour full maintenance and service agreement, which along with the Fuel Edge guarantee, gives them certainty around the productivity of the two excavators. “I have to say Terra Cat’s service response and backup results in low downtime for us,” says Michael. “The machines are performing well – fuel consumption is low and our operating costs are down. It’s working out well.”

productivity level. And the 350 offers up to 10 per cent more productivity coupled with industry-leading fuel efficiency.

TERRA ANALYTICAL EXPANDS COOLANT TEST SUITE

Elemental wear metal analysis is now included in Terra Analytical’s standard coolant analysis testing suite at no additional cost. Routine coolant testing is an essential part of equipment maintenance, helping to monitor engine health and prevent costly breakdowns. Industry experts estimate that between 30% and 50% of engine failures are due to cooling system faults such as overheating, damage to head gaskets and cylinder heads, cracked liners, coolant leaks, thermostat and/or coolant pump failures and improper maintenance. Coolant testing involves an in-depth analysis to assess its condition, covering PQ (magnetic ferrous debris), pH (acidity/alkalinity), foaming, nitrite levels, glycol concentration, conductivity, boiling and freezing points, as well as a visual inspection to identify colour and visible contamination.

With the inclusion of elemental wear metal and additive analysis, the accuracy and relevance of these tests are expected to improve even further, as samples can be cross-referenced to identify potential areas of concern. The results assist maintenance teams in detecting potential issues before they escalate into serious repairs and downtime. If any concerning findings arise in a customer’s test results, these will be thoroughly explained in their evaluation report, complete with interpretation comments to ensure customers understand the implications. Terra Analytical is New Zealand’s leading equipment fluid test facility. Operating in Christchurch since 1973, the lab tests a range of fluids including engine oil, gear oil, hydraulic oil, coolants, grease, diesel fuel, diesel exhaust fluid, filter debris and more.

PLANNING UNDERWAY FOR TERRA AT 2025 WHEELS AT WANAKA

Preparations are going well for Wheels at Wanaka next Easter, where Caterpillar will be at the forefront of celebrations. On 18-20 April, Three Parks, Wanaka will once again roar to life, as enthusiasts from around the globe gather with a shared passion for wheeled and tracked machines.

April 2025 marks the centenary of the Caterpillar brand, and as a platinum partner of Wheels at Wanaka, Terra Cat will commemorate the 100-year anniversary with an extensive exhibition site. This will include a static display of some of the latest Cat equipment, and technology-enabled solutions that provide customers with efficiency and productivity advantages. As part of the Easter weekend, vintage earthmoving machines that have helped shape New Zealand will also be in action alongside their modern Cat counterparts for the Terra Cat Earthmoving Extravaganza. Wheels at Wanaka will also host the first-ever New Zealand round of the Cat Global Operator Challenge. This is where the country's best operators get the opportunity to show off their skills — and one will take home the title of New Zealand Champion, with the chance to travel to Las Vegas in 2026 and be crowned World Champion. During each portion of the Cat Global Operator Challenge, participants will test their skills against

fellow machine operators. Each will execute a variety of tasks in three Cat machines, such as digging a trench, loading a precise amount of dirt, and hauling or manoeuvring the equipment through a variety of obstacles. All challenges will use integrated technology to enhance each Cat machine’s performance. “We’ve had a large number of registrations of interest from New Zealand operators to get involved, and our team has been working closely with each to confirm the final entrants for the competition,” says Terra Cat CEO, Chris Heaton. “Regardless of whether you’re a long-time machine enthusiast, a general spectator or a skilled operator, you won’t want to miss this contest.” As in previous years, the Terra exhibition site at the 2025 event will feature a retail shop selling Caterpillar merchandise. This will include exclusive Cat Centenary items – a must-have for any machinery fan.

CAT ® GENSETS HELP INCREASE COMMUNITY ENERGY RESILIENCE

8

North Island electricity distributor Powerco is rolling out stand-alone power systems (SAPS), which include a Cat generator set, to keep its communities powered up during some outages. Supplied by Base Power , the SAPS units are powered by batteries, along with a backup Cat diesel generator, for when the battery is low. Powerco is using two different solutions from Base Power to assist with community energy resilience. The first is a trailer-mounted mobile hybrid SAPS. Wrapped in specially designed artworks by artist Sarah Kolver, four have been deployed so far. The company purchased these SAPS to help lower its emissions and reduce diesel use during some customer outages, Powerco General Manager Electricity Karen Frew says. “When a fault occurs on our network, if power can’t be restored within a specific timeframe and other practical outage mitigation options, such as network back feeds, are not available, we consider using a diesel generator as an interim power supply. Depending on the fault, diesel generators may need to be connected for a number of days, until repairs are completed.” “Generator-hybrid solutions like these units ensure an efficient, quiet, and sustainable power supply by optimising fuel consumption and reducing emissions. Onsite, when the battery has been fully used, the generator kicks in and recharges the battery. Back at the depot, the batteries are recharged before the next deployment by using the grid. Using them means we can substantially lower our emissions overall,” Karen Frew says. The Base Power mobile hybrid SAPS system combines a 60kWh battery unit with a Cat DE22E3 genset. The 20kVA three-phase capacity of the units is suitable for residential houses and small commercial customers. Using the 60kWh battery units alongside the generator may reduce up to 80% of diesel used during a typical outage.

Powerco is also installing the hybrid SAPS at targeted community buildings to create what it calls ‘PowerHubs’, which can be used during emergencies, or frequent or long power outages. These PowerHubs use a combination of solar energy and Cat DE65E0 gensets to charge a battery bank. The stored energy then powers the building via an automatic changeover switch if there’s an outage. The unit is housed in a 10ft container that is mounted on ground screws and hardwired to the building it’s adjacent to. By connecting these new backup power systems to community buildings, PowerHubs can provide essential services such as heating, cooking, hot water, lighting and charging capability for people during emergencies. “SAPS units are an integral part of Powerco’s strategy to provide reliable and sustainable power solutions, especially in remote areas or during emergencies,” says Karen Frew. Terra Cat Power Systems general manager, Greg McCarthy, says Cat generators provide a reliable power source and ensure communities can remain resilient during emergencies. “Natural events and emergencies are a common occurrence in New Zealand,” says Mr McCarthy. “Cat gensets provide people with peace of mind that they continue to stay connected to the grid during adverse events. We’re proud to be involved in these resilience-building initiatives.” Initially, PowerHubs are planned for Whanganui River, Coromandel and Tararua over the next couple of years.

UPGRADE YOUR MACHINES TO 4G PRODUCT LINK FOR FREE

Mobile network carriers are in the process of retiring their 2G and 3G networks to expand and support the 4G and 5G networks. This means that any Caterpillar machines that are connected to the old networks will stop reporting any updates to us from the end of 2024. The good news is there’s a free fix for all Caterpillar owners – an upgrade to a 4G Product Link device. This will ensure valuable information from the Product Link device doesn’t disappear and allows us to continue to support your machine/s over cellular networks. If your machine is still reporting via 2G and 3G networks, there are two key dates you need to be aware of. • 7 December – Caterpillar will unsubscribe assets that haven't reported for the past 12 months, or don't have digital authorisation. • 19 December – All remaining unsubscribed assets will be blocked from future subscriptions until the device is updated to 4G.

This shutdown only applies to Product Link devices, not the asset itself. Your machine can be resubscribed once the device is updated to 4G. Your local Terra Cat branch is on hand to advise you of a time that they can complete the replacement free of charge. You can find details of, and get in touch with, your local branch by clicking here .

CHRISTCHURCH ROLLING INTO ITS NEW BRANCH

Work on the new Christchurch branch is progressing well, with the construction completed and the internal fit-out well under way, and timeframes for the transition from Hornby to the new site at Waterloo Park are starting to firm up. Over the next couple of months there’ll be a big focus on moving and mobilising the distribution centre, PDI, workshop and the retail space to the new premises. The distribution centre will move in before Christmas, while the workshop and engineering bay are on track to move in January, but this is reliant on some long lead-time items arriving from overseas. Once the timing is confirmed, the moving dates will be communicated to our customers and stakeholders. The practical completion of the Terra Analytical laboratory is scheduled for April, and this part of the business will move to their new Waterloo Park building in Q2 of 2025.

Over the road, the base build of the new support office that Terra will share with Sime Darby Motors NZ is almost completed, with the final cladding and windows being installed. At this stage, the head office staff will also be moving in the early part of Q2 2025.

Josh Forrest is our 2024 top apprentice!

After two days of intense competition, Hamilton’s Josh Forrest has been crowned Terra Cat’s top apprentice for 2024. The 22-year-old edged two talented contestants – Vinnie Lucas from Dunedin and Mitch Riley from Wellington – to confirm his spot at Caterpillar's Dealer Top Apprentice Competition in Melbourne in February next year. “I’m a bit lost for words, really,” Josh said shortly after being announced as the winner. “The challenges were pretty tough and the two other techs were really knowledgeable and good guys.” “I gained a lot of knowledge over the two days, and one of the biggest things I learned was focusing on communicating with the assessors. Communication is key and I learnt how important it is to treat the assessors as I would a customer.” Over the two days the contestants had to hold a 10-minute presentation to a small audience on a specified subject, then undertake three practical challenges for the “skills Olympics”. These challenges included building a hydraulic hose, an after-failure analysis of an 836K landfill compactor and finding solutions for the customer, and a fuel supply issue that was causing a C16 engine to run rough.

“I think the presentation was the toughest part,” laughs Josh. “It’s pretty daunting to speak for 10-plus minutes in front of people, but I still really enjoyed the experience.” Technical training lead, Dylan Cairns, says this year’s competition was the closest he’d been part of. “The skillsets of the technicians that come through DTAP improves every year, and the skills gap gets closer and closer. This year there were only two points separating first from third – that’s how close it was.” For Josh, the focus now shifts to Melbourne where he’ll go up against Caterpillar’s best apprentices internationally. “It’s pretty wild to think I’m going to represent Terra over there on the world stage. I’m going to be asking a lot of questions and learning as much as I possibly can for it, get some more training and be as prepared as possible for it.” Josh wrapped up his apprenticeship in July 2024 and is now a heavy diesel field service tech at the Hamilton branch, mainly focused on servicing, diagnostics and repairs.
