Fibre-Based Packaging Surges by Greg Kishbaugh

T he ongoing push for sustainability means corrugated board, folding cartons, moulded pulp, flexible and spe- ciality papers, are all receiving new interest from packaging buyers.

Worth a total of $425.4 billion in 2022, multiple factors will interact to push worldwide demand for fibre-based pack- aging to a value of $503.4 bn in 2027, equivalent to a com- pound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4 percent, according to a new report from Smithers. Across the same period total weight of fibre packaging will increase from 264.4 million tons in 2022 to 316.3 million tons in 2027, a CAGR of 3.7 percent.

A previous statement from the company suggested that 90 percent of organizations with a pledge to

Retailers and major FMCG companies have signed commitments to make their packaging portfolios more sustainable, according to the report. Paperboard and other fibre formats are readily understood to be recyclable by con- sumers, making these an increasingly popular option. This trend is being supported by official commitments to phase-out single-use plastics; with more jurisdictions copying legislation pioneered in the EU, France, and California. In Development Smithers examines current fibre-based packag- ing design, including profiles of the latest paper- board formats that are being developed to replace single-use polymer packs for food, personal care goods, and beverages. This is posing direct techni- cal challenges. • In food there is a need to develop superior func- tional barrier coatings that can protect fibre mate- rials from grease, oil, and water, while preserving perishable goods, said the report. This has led to many paper converters launching new specialty bar- rier paper grades for use in pouch packaging and food-service applications. These are already gaining traction in segments like fresh produce and confec- Fibre-Based Packaging (Cont’d from Page 1)

tionery; greater diversification will happen as further improvements are made in coating performance; • In beverages, liquid paperboard manufacturers are experimenting with steps like removing alumi- num barrier layers, and high-profile brands – in- cluding Absolut, Carlsberg, and Unilever (Lenor) – have tested fibre-based bottles. Both approaches still rely on polymer-based barrier layers and the emphasis is to design these to be easy to remove in existing material recovery streams, without damag- ing the recovered fibres; • For personal care goods, there is a parallel trend to develop fibre-based packaging materials that can replicate the premium look and feel of existing polymer formats; •Industrial and transit packaging is also using more fibre-based alternatives, especially in protec- tive components and dunnage in direct-to-consum- er e-commerce channels. While innovation will lead to incremental gains for all fibre packaging types across the next five years, one of the strongest growth trajectories is forecast for moulded pulp/fibre, said the report. Multiple line expansions are underway to meet the demand for a more sustainable alternative to thermoformed plastics, employing new coatings and faster pro- duction technology.

the pace that organizations setting targets back in 2017 and 2018 had hoped for,” said Blake. “Orga- nizations face operational and financial challeng- es that were discovered only through the attempt to deliver their goals, but meaningful progress on sustainability can still be made with more realistic frameworks in place. Smurfit Kappa Invest In Green Energy At Paper Mill Smurfit Kappa will invest 6 million euros at its Sanguesa paper mill in Spain, which will see the construction and installation of up to 12,000 solar panels on land adjacent to the mill. The solar panels will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 3,200 tons annually. Once operational, it is estimated that the panels will generate more than 10 GWh of power annually, which will reduce the current external electricity consumption and dependency by 7 percent. The Spanish solar energy project is the latest for Smurfit Kappa, which has launched similar initia- tives in other plants in Spain, Colombia and Mexico to generate sustainable energy. Construction on the solar panels is expected to be completed by the end of this summer.

transition into 100 percent reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging by 2025 will not meet their targets; this is expected to motivate a widespread shift in approach. Although this is also thought to result in greenwashing allegations, Gartner sug- gests that companies pushing for stakeholders, customers, and investors to embrace life cycle as- sessment (LCA) as a sustainability metric will have the relevant data to support their contributions to reducing emissions and climate change. LCAs For Packaging John Blake, senior director analyst with the Gart- ner Supply Chain practice, maintains that previ- ous attempts to popularize LCAs for packaging fell short due to the complexity of the data analysis and a lack of relevancy to general attitudes at the time. However, newer developments in data analysis tools are increasing the accessibility of such testing. Therefore, it is anticipated that future sustainable packaging initiatives will take the form of material reduction or adopting materials that are produced, transported, and processed efficiently – all of which are said to be financially viable ways for companies to lower their carbon footprints. “The packaging ecosystem has not advanced at

U.S. Folding Carton Market To See Measured Growth According to the Paperboard Packaging Council’s recent Trends: 2022-23 Industry Outlook and Mar- ket Data Report , U.S. demand for folding cartons will grow on average by 1.3 percent annually, with the market reaching 5.4 million tons by 2026. Output growth in non-durables, comprised of many carton-packaged goods, is expected to ex- pand by 0.8 percent over the five-year forecast. Prepared for PPC members by RISI, the Trends Report describes how overall economic trends will affect the folding carton market in the near and far terms. The report states that general econom- ic fundamentals in the U.S. economy will remain strong throughout the coming years, for example, with consumer spending growing by 1.8 percent from 2021-26. In addition to the overall economic performance, other factors play an essential role in Trends’ growth forecast for the next five years, including changing consumer spending habits, substitution away from plastic packaging, and efforts to reduce plastic waste. Shipment growth will be healthiest at the end of the five-year forecast, as the current business cycle

is predicted to peak in 2026. The total value of U.S. carton shipments is predicted to grow from an esti- mated $9.5 billion in 2021 to $13.3 billion in 2026. The folding carton industry is not without near- term challenges. A short, two-quarter downturn in economic out- put is expected in 2023, likely due to a recession becoming more of a concern as inflation eats into consumer budgets. Economic growth will provide a current for folding carton producers in the coming year, but overseas production will continue to challenge the domestic market as competition with imports persisting over the next five years. Competition from alternative packaging methods and materials will also remain a challenge for do- mestic folding carton producers, especially with in- creasing prices of boxboard substrates. On the flip side, decisions by some of the larg- est fast-food companies and municipalities across the country seem to be providing hope that paper- board packaging materials are poised to benefit from their environmentally friendly profile. Plastic substitution and environmentally friendly packaging trends should provide a tailwind for car- ton growth over the forecast.
