Listed below are examples of the types of activities that will be considered in an application by a faculty member for tenure. These guidelines should not be considered an all-inclusive catalog or a checklist that will ensure granting of tenure. The balance of accomplishments in these areas may vary from one candidate to another and exceptional qualifications in one or two areas may partially compensate for less prominent accomplishments in another. Research • Candidates must have produced a significant body of scholarship of undeniable impact. Examples of appropriate scholarly research activities include: o Sustained record of high caliber, peer-reviewed publications in major journals, which contribute new knowledge and significant value to the field. o Independence as a scholar as shown by being first or senior author on publications. o Additional publications on collaborative studies where investigator has a substantial role. o Invited presentations and leadership at regional, national and international meetings. o Involvement/leadership in multidisciplinary research program development. • Candidates must have a sustained record of extramural researchfunding. o Candidates should be principal investigators on peer reviewed research grants and/or investigator-initiated clinical trials, but this requirement may also be met if the candidate is part of multi-investigator grants and presents evidence of independent and indispensable contributions. Of these, federal grants carry the most weight; however other forms of extramural support are also considered in tenure decisions, including serving as co-investigator or project director on multi-investigator studies, or as an investigator on clinical trials or studies that lead to new approaches to treatment of human disease or the translation of UC intellectual property into commercially viable products.
