TasTAFE Drysdale South restaurants hosts The Captain’s Ride celebration dinner

TasTAFE Drysdale South restaurant had the honour of hosting the celebration dinner to mark the end of the charity event, The Captain’s Ride, on 10 November.

Drysdale Certificate III Commercial Cookery (International) students and Certificate III Hospitality (Food and Beverage) students prepared and served drinks, canapes and a three course meal for 120 riders and supporters, including event organiser and former Australian cricket captain, Steve Waugh and former Formula One Champion, Mark Webber. The hungry riders enjoyed a menu created exclusively for the event by Drysdale students and staff to mark the end of the six day, 800km bike riding event which raised money for children with rare diseases as part of the Steve Waugh Foundation. Dishes served on the night included sashimi of yellow fin tuna, braised duck with mushroom and lamb shoulder with tamarind ginger dressing. For dessert the guests enjoyed spiced crème brulee and chocolate truffle cake with an elderflower and saffron syrup. Among the 70 riders who took part in the Captain’s Ride were Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and Tasmanian rider Richie Porte, AFL footballers Adam Goodes and Danny Frawley and Olympians Shane Gould, Daley Thompson, Drew Ginn, John Maclean and Michael Milton.

Certificate III Hospitality student, Nick Radovanovic (pictured with Mark Webber and Michael Milton), said it was a great privilege to work at the dinner and be able to meet the likes of Steve Waugh, Mark Webber, Michael Milton and Danny Frawley. “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a photo taken with these icons of Australian sport. It was a humbling experience. “None of this would have been possible without the organisation and guidance of the TasTAFE teachers and other staff members. “The chef and her students also need to be commended for the quality of the food that was delivered,” Nick said. Drysdale Certificate II Retail Baking Assistance students and their teachers Mike Goddard and Linda Evans also supported the event, preparing more than 1500 portion-packed sweet snacks for the riders’ pit stops. TasTAFE Drysdale Division Manager, Maree Gerke, said TasTAFE was proud to be involved in such a worthy event. “It was fantastic to be able to play a part in supporting the work of the Steve Waugh foundation and providing a celebratory and snacks to the riders involved.

“Drysdale’s involvement in events like the Captain’s Ride also provide valuable real-life learning experiences for our students. “I’d also like to thank the THA for their support and contribution to the dinner,” Ms Gerke said.
