MAX HITCHINS Memory - a great marketing tool

E ...............Evoke an association. The dictionary definition of evoke is to ‘call to mind.’ So I suggest you call to mind or evoke an association with someone else with the same name or a similar name. S ...............Say and spell the name. Make sure you firstly hear the name and then use the name immediately. And, for good measure, I recommend asking your new acquaintance how to spell their name. There are many other memory tips and tricks I would like to share with you. Happy Christmas, New Year and Memories. By line: Max’s ebooks in the How To Develop a Memory Like An Elephant series include Remembering Names, Remembering Speeches and Remembering To Do Lists. Three years ago I saw a new owner take over a very successful corner store near where I live. I felt sorry for Tony, the new owner. He was taking over from a very good woman operator who had doubled the trade in the two years she was there. Tony was an Asian who spoke reasonable English. But I thought he would never be able to follow in the footsteps of the very successful Aussie woman operator from whom he bought the business. One of the things she was known for was calling everyone “ Darling .” She made you feel very welcome with “ Hello Darling ” whenever you walked into the store. Poor Tony I thought. Nice guy as he was, I seriously doubted if he would be able to hold onto the customers. How wrong I was! Not only has Tony been able to hold onto the customers. I estimate he has trebled the trade in the last three years. “How did he do that?” you may well ask. He did it using a skill that almost seems to have been forgotten in todays business world. In 1936 Dale Carnegie wrote in his book - How To Win Friends And Influence People - “Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” I don’t know if Tony has ever heard of Dale Carnegie but he surely has adapted his principles. Tony set about the task of remembering the name of every person who came into his shop. I now love to go and stand in line to buy my take away coffee. I listen to him call everyone by name. He also knows the names of their partners, friends, children and anyone who ever accompanied his customers into his store. He’s amazing! I guess I am biased, as I have written a series of eBooks on how to improve your memory. Hence watching Tony operate was and is music to my ears. Can you do the same thing as Tony? Yes you can. I will show you how. But first may I ask “Have you ever forgotten a name less than three seconds after you have been introduced to someone?” Can your memory be that bad? No. The most likely cause is you have allowed yourself to get into some bad memory habits. Let’s me give you some tips to on how to remember names taken from Book 1 in the series of How To Develop a Memory Like An Elephant eBooks. If you are prepared to commit to the “3P’s” necessary to improve your memory, I guarantee you will astound yourself, your colleagues and the people you meet. And those 3P’s are: Persistence, Practice and Patience. Try using my EYES acronym every time you meet a new person. E ...............The eyes have it. When you meet a new person remember to focus on the colour of their eyes. This is a ‘prompt’ to say to yourself “Hey...I really am interested in this person. I want to remember this name. Y ............... Yes, I can remember names. Give yourself positive feed back. Tell yourself you ‘can’ remember names. Do you think sportsmen and women, when preparing for their match, say “Oh I’m hopeless. We’ll never win today.” Of course they don’t.
