MONTE SERENO, CALIFORNIA Listing Price: $10.5 million
Set on a 1.4-acre estate in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Moun- tains, this 1,200-square-foot pool house, which also functions as a one-bedroom guest house, takes center stage in the backyard. It has a full kitchen, complete with a bi-fold, pass-through window for serving food poolside; a living area; a full bath with radiant-heated floors; and a separate laundry. A covered solana that has a kitchen, a barbecue grill, and a dishwasher complements the pool house. Sets of sliding glass doors dramatically open it to the other amenities of the landscape: a bocce ball court, a tiered fountain with accent lighting, and a spa and a lounge with a 65-inch TV and a dual-sided fireplace. For those bored with all these luxuries, Amy McCafferty, a broker associate with Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty, says there’s also a separate wine cellar with a tasting room.
BERNARDSVILLE, NEW JERSEY Listing Price: $13.75 million
Made of cedar and stone, this heated and air-conditioned pool house, which opens to the outdoors via a wall of sliding glass doors, is designed for year-round entertainment. The loft- style, 300-square-foot building has a kitchenette, a wood-burning raised- hearth fireplace, and an extensive sound system inside and out. The California-style structure, built in 2020, lounges next to the rectangular saltwater pool, the tanning platform and the wrought- iron pergola, which, listing agent Jill Turpin of Turpin Realtors/Luxury Portfolio International says “offers a wonderful place to sit in the shade.” The wider 32-acre estate, which was designed by architect George B. Post and dates to 1886, also has a gymnasium with a basketball court and dual locker rooms, and a car- riage house on a separate 10-acre lot.
T he pool house, once a humble and utilitarian place to change into a swimsuit, shower, and stow seasonal gear, has been reborn as the shining star of the home’s outdoor entertainment space. Sometimes every bit as elegant as the main residence, the pool house can be an outdoor oasis and the prime
gathering spot for events large and small. And no wonder: Some are equipped with everything from fireplaces, wet bars, and spas to flat-screen TVs, lounge chairs, and guest bedrooms. Here are five properties, priced at $10 million and higher, whose amenity-rich pool houses are over the top.
