Track-and-Trace Packaging Booms by Greg Kishbaugh

T he long-term affects of the Covid pandemic on the pack- aging industry are certain to be felt for years. A new re- port from Smithers suggests that the track-and-trace pack- aging industry is set to reach a total value of $2.5 billion by 2027, much of the growth in demand and market value attributed to the rise of e-commerce and counterfeiting con- cerns associated with the pandemic.

The winners of each category will be announced at the Global La- bel Reunion Party on the evening of day one at Labelexpo Americas 2022 in Chicago, Illinois. Rising Stars Nominees for the Rising Star Award are Stijn Billiet, Virginia (Ginnie) Gandy, and Tom Schouten. The criteria for this award were that the individual has worked a maximum of five years in the label industry with a record that reflects ongoing, exceptional and growing contributions to the industry as well as increased levels of leader-

In The Future of Track and Trace in Packaging to 2027, Smithers states that the total value of taggants, RFID antennas, and coding print in packaging applications has grown by 76 percent since 2017 and will be worth $1.6 billion in 2022.

boost security and efficiencies. Smithers predicts a rapid adoption of trace-and-trace technologies into multiple other consumer segments that ship perish- able or valuable goods, including food, drinks, and cosmetics. These industries will benefit from the fall in pric- ing for individual tagging components as these technologies are refined and commercialized. Com- panies including Walmart are now widely adopting RFID for retail settings, for example. Unique Identifiers Industrial and transit packaging will remain the most lucrative element of the trace-and-trace mar- ket as large unit packaging apparently justifies the cost of bespoke solutions such as active RFID tag- ging, according to the report. With the supply chain disruptions wrought by COVID-19 continuing to be felt across industries, smart packaging solutions that allow for resilience and flexibility in supply chains will continue to expand. In the short term, the packaging track-and-trace market will continue to rely principally on coding print, such as unique alphanumeric identifiers, 1D barcodes, and 2D barcodes. A wider interest in on- pack RFID and NFC frequency antennas to provide more dynamic monitoring in more expensive appli-

The upward trajectory is forecast to continue, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of +9.5 percent through to 2027 for the track-and- trace packaging industry. By 2027, the track-and- trace packaging market will reportedly yield a total value of $2.5 billion. As challenges continue to linger, supply chain se- curity has emerged as a business priority during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has pushed up demand for smart packaging solutions, Smithers claims. A recent report from Europol and the Eu- ropean Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges in terms of preventing counterfeit- ing, with the shift to e-commerce and the global roll-out of the vaccination program requiring both tested and novel solutions to protect consumers. Traceability features, including item-level tracking, are already mandated in many high-risk segments, such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Smithers says that healthcare will remain the big- gest end-use market for track-and-trace solutions, with its value reportedly set to double between 2021 and 2027. Concepts and technologies already established in industries like pharmaceuticals are increasingly being applied to other supply chains in a bid to

ship and responsibility. The successful candidate’s track record should reflect a strong potential for appointment at the highest levels of the profession. The nominees for the Environmental Sustainabil- ity category are Avery Dennison, Flint Group and S-OneLP. The judges were looking for a company that has in- troduced a specific product or process or demonstrat- ed sustainable and environmentally acceptable work- ing practices in their purchasing and manufacturing operations and could demonstrate key materials, pro- duction and performance or consumer benefits. The nominees for the Innovation Award for com- panies with under 300 employees are Packlock and S-OneLP. In the Innovation for companies with more than 300 employees category there were 16 entries, with Actega Signite and Actega Ecoleaf be- ing shortlisted. For this award, the judging panel looked at the degree of innovation, the practical impact on the innovator and their clients, the economic aspects (cost, time, process), environmental aspects and the overall concept. MPS Asia To Host Open House In Kuala Lumpur MPS Systems Asia is opening its doors to greet customers on September 6, 2022, at its office and showroom in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The open house will include presentations covering the latest industry trends and feature a live demonstration of the MPS EF-530 seventh-generation flexo press with eight-color flexo units and one EXLp packaging sta- tion. ciated with COVID-19, including the rise of e-com- merce shipments, alongside the longer-term trend of pharmaceuticals adopting early trace-and-trace solutions. There will also be strong demand for tracking components that can operate with oth- er common formats, including metal, rigid plastic, flexible plastic, and paper substrates. AICC NOW brings all of AICC’s videos and online content to one location. cations is expected. A cited example is Identiv, pro- vider of digital security solutions, which worked with OTACA Tequila to provide an embedded NFC tag that allows consumers to authenticate and re-or- der the product. With concerns of counterfeiting increasing, covert taggants are likely to be a popular option for brand owners. Earlier this year, Avery Dennison acquired TexTrace with the aim of expanding the use of tex- tile RFID labels that remain on garments for their entire lifetime, either as a sewn-on label or built into a product’s seam, which provides embedded protection against product loss. The greatest potential will come from software systems that process product identities, with blockchain apparently emerging as an affordable, scalable platform that can offer security, trans- parency, and intelligent inventory management. Software companies are creating dedicated ser- vice lines to capitalize on this opportunity, and thus actively engaging with packaging and logis- tics company partners. Additionally, paperboard is likely to account for the largest share of the track-and-trace packaging market going forward, led in part by trends asso-

Fedrigoni Becomes Jointly Owned By Investment Firms Investment firms Bain Capital Private Equity and BC Partners have entered into a joint ownership agreement for Fedrigoni, a producer of self-adhe- sive labels and fiber-based packaging products. Bain Capital acquired Fedrigoni in 2017. Under Bain Capital’s ownership, Fedrigoni has more than doubled Adjusted Sales and nearly tripled Adjusted EBITDA through a combination of organic growth acceleration and M&A execution. This new partnership will support Fedrigoni’s management team as it looks to build on its suc- cessful track-record of M&A. BC Partners’ portfolio companies have executed more than 400 add-on transactions over the last decade. Together with Bain Capital, the Fedrigoni Group has carried out a transformation that rested on five pillars: a distinctive and premium offering; superi- or customer intimacy and experience; operational excellence; attraction of the best talent and devel- opment of its 4,500 people, while creating an inclu- sive and safe environment; acceleration in acquisi- tions aimed at geographical expansion and product portfolio diversification. Fedrigoni has also embedded sustainability into its business strategy, including ongoing efforts to re- duce its environmental impact and to support cus- tomers in tackling their transition toward ecological practices and an increasingly circular business. This includes research on increasingly sustainable mate- rials to the development of products to help brands in their plastic-to-paper transition, as well as the re- use of waste from customers’ production processes and the development of mono-material solutions. Through its 2030 sustainability roadmap, Fedrigo- ni committed to reduce by 30 percent its carbon emissions by 2030, and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 in line with the Science-Based Targets Ini- tiative, with 95 percent recovered water and 100 percent industrial waste recovery across its opera- tions. This year it has received a Platinum EcoVadis sustainability rating. AF&PA Releases Packaging Paper Report The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&- PA), has released its June 2022 printing-writing and packaging papers monthly reports, which indicate shipments for both grades decreased compared with June 2021.

DuPont Commits To GHG Emissions Reduction DuPont has committed to setting science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a partnership between CDP, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). As part of its commitment, DuPont plans to work closely with SBTi to determine GHG emissions re- duction targets for Scope 1 and 2 emissions aligned with the Paris agreement which sets the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. In addition, Du- Pont will also work with SBTi to develop its Scope 3 GHG emissions target. SBTi defines and promotes best practice in set- ting science-based emission reductions targets and brings together a team of experts to provide inde- pendent assessment and validation of targets. In 2019, DuPont announced its Acting on Climate goal as part of its sustainability strategy. The com- pany has been making progress against its goal to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 30 percent compared to the 2019 baseline and source 60 per- cent of its electricity from renewable energy sources and credits by 2030, and to deliver carbon neutral operations by 2050. As reported in DuPont’s 2022 Sustainability Report, the company has reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 16 percent since 2019. DuPont is a member of RE100, a global environ- mental initiative led by the Climate Group in part- nership with CDP, which brings together companies committed to shifting the source of electricity used globally in their operations to renewable energy. In 2021, the company also signed a virtual pow- er purchase agreement (VPPA) with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC. The VPPA project is scheduled to commence operations in 2023 and is expected to deliver approximately 528,000 mega- watt hours (MWh) of wind-generated renewable electricity annually to the local grid. This is equiva- lent to approximately 25 percent of the company’s total electricity needs today. Mondi Expands Sustainable Pet Food Packaging Mondi is investing nearly 65 million Euro in three Consumer Flexibles packaging plants in Europe in order to meet growing customer demand for sus- tainable pet food packaging solutions. The Europe- an pet food market has grown significantly in recent years, driven by a consistent rise in pet ownership. This trend increased during the COVID-19 pandem- ic and is expected to continue for many years to come, according to a report from Mackenzie 2020. This project is part of Mondi’s previously an- nounced 1 billion Euro expansionary capital invest- ment program to accelerate growth in sustainable packaging. Work has already started at Mondi Korneuburg (Austria) and includes investments in new machin- ery and equipment as well as an expanded pro- duction area. These changes will lead to a capacity increase for pre-made retort stand-up pouches for wet pet food. New Investment The group is also investing in new machinery at Mondi Halle and Mondi Steinfeld in Germany, to in- crease production capacity of sustainable pre-made bag solutions for pet food, as well as home and personal care. This will enable future growth and support cus- tomers to switch from multi-layer, non-recyclable packaging to more sustainable alternatives such as mono-material recyclable stand-up pouches and pa- per-based pre-made bags. This investment also supports our Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability framework which is focused on circular driven solutions, creat- ed by empowered people, taking action on climate. With these projects, we’re increasing operational ef- ficiency and reducing our own energy consumption while also connecting our production network.” Print & Pack Named Apex Supplier For Australasia Packaging solutions firm Print & Pack has been appointed as the official supplier of Apex Interna- tional within the Australasia region. Great Lakes Wins INX Can Design Contest

Flexo Market News I nternet D irectory

The marketing team at Great Lakes Brewing Com- pany in Cleveland, Ohio, recently received their tro- phy for winning the third annual Colored by INX Can Design Contest. An independent panel of judg- es determined the company’s TropiCoastal Tropical IPA craft beer entry featured the best design of this year’s entrants, allowing them to claim back-to-back titles after winning in 2021. All submitted entries required designers to use the INX Metal Color Catalog to produce a commer- cial can design before December 31, 2021. Jameson Campbell, Creative Manager for Great Lakes Brewing Company, said the catalog inspires his team to find the right combination of colors to deliver each beer’s unique story, create shelf appeal and build strong brands. “Our goal was to expand our IPA portfolio with a year-round offering that delivers big, ripe tropical fruit aromas,” he remarked. “So how do you achieve that feeling visually, especially when your beer is primarily sold in regions where a plane ticket is required to capture those vacation vibes? With im- mersive, enveloping splashes of color.” The year 2022 marks 25 years since The Phoenix Challenge Foundation (PCF) was launched, an or- ganization that solely focuses on building tomor- row’s workforce for flexo and package printing. The organization has guided more than 5,000 stu- dents through programs competitions and scholar- ships, and many of those same students have found employment and solid career paths in packaging and label printing. To continue its mission and to celebrate its 25 year anniversary, the PCF has announced the An- nual Phoenix Challenge Golf Outing & Fundraiser will take place at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe, North Carolina, on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
