S Solar Thermal Energy: Concentrating the Sun In this course, we will give an overview of several of the leading concentrating solar power technologies. We will discuss the basic components which are commonly found in the main types of CSP facilities: mirrors, receivers, and tracking systems, along with the ancillary components. In addition to the primary use of solar thermal heat for generating steam turbine electrical power, we will discuss other heat processes which can utilize the primary and secondary thermal output from these CSP systems. Class Format: Online On-Demand, Online PDF Offered In: AK, AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MS, MO, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY 6 hours Stabilizing Soils for Pavements This course is designed to fulfill continuing education requirements for civil engineers. It delineates criteria for improving the engineering properties of soils used for pavement base courses, sub-base courses, and sub- grades by the use of additives which are mixed into the soil to effect the desired improvement. These criteria are also applicable to roads and airfields having a stabilized surface layer. Unless otherwise noted, all information in this course was obtained from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Website. T The History and Future of Domes

U Uses of Geotextiles in Engineering

This course reviews the essential principles in designing a dome. It uses the Romans’ Pantheon Dome to introduce the structural elements of domes: meridians, parallels and materials such as concrete. It outlines how modern domes are engineered and what loads must be considered in the design, emphasizing how to calculate the loads on a dome from wind using the ASCE Standard, and how to size I-beams for a modern dome. It also shares the stories behind the building of Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia – a cathedral built 14 centuries ago that can still astonish a modern-day engineer – as well as one of the most revolutionary domes in the history of building: The Duomo (Dome) of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. Its double-masonry dome and unique structure allowed its designer to span a greater distance than the Pantheon.
