A SECRET GAME OF DODGEBALL Confessions of a Day Camp Counselor In my youth, I was a longtime member of the YMCA. I started going when I was around 13 years old, and I got to know the people who worked there very well. When I turned 17, I was invited to work at the day camp at the Y. That was my first summer job. I eventually worked in other places, like restaurants and such, but the day camp remains my favorite job fromwhen I was young. I had a lot of fun working with kids. We got to play sports and take the kids on field trips. It was a great experience. The kids at the YMCA day camp ranged from ages 5–12, and a few of themwere from theWhaley Children’s Center. They needed people they could look up to. I thought it was really great that the day camp could be a place where the kids could have fun and we could be role models for them. I really enjoyed the experience, so when I got the opportunity to work at another day camp when I was in college, I was happy to sign up. A girl I took a class with at the University of Michigan ran a day camp at a church on the north end of Flint. At that camp, we spent a lot of time outside doing activities with the kids. One of the moments that really stands out in my memory was a day when all the kids really wanted to play dodgeball. However, this was a time when the leaders of the camp had outlawed dodgeball for being “too dangerous.” I took the kids to the back court, broke out the dodgeballs, and told them they could play, but if anybody cried, we wouldn’t play dodgeball anymore. The game started and everything was going well until one kid got hit with the ball. He was tearing up, about to cry, when the other kids started shouting, “No, don’t cry! We can’t play if you cry!” The kid did start crying, but he said, “I’m not crying! I’m not crying. I’m okay. We can still play!” I let them keep playing, and that kid ended up being just fine. He had a great time and all the kids loved the camp.

“I thought it was really great that the day camp could be a place where the kids could have fun and we could be role models for them.”

It was important to me that all the kids at the day camps had a great time, so I did everything I could to make sure they were in a safe environment and still having an enjoyable experience. Going to camp should be a good memory for kids they’ll hold on to for the rest of their lives. When I was young, my uncle invited me down to Dallas to play in a basketball camp. I met all the members of the Dallas Mavericks and the guy who would end up becoming LeBron James’ agent. When I was a counselor, I wanted the kids I was working with to have as much fun as I had at that basketball camp. Working at the camps really went along withmy mission. I realized early on that I’m the kind of person who wants to bring a lot of energy to a room. I enjoyed working with people, especially kids who need someone to look up to. This is part of the reason I founded Flint’s Finest Basketball Club. I remembered howmuch fun those kids had at day camp, and I wanted to provide the same opportunities for kids to have fun and find role models in our community.

‘DAD, HOW DO I?’

How 1 Father Is Passing Along Life Lessons Being abandoned by a parent is one of the most devastating things that can happen to a child. Rob Kenney experienced this trauma firsthand when his father said he no longer wanted any of his eight children. Kenney was only 12 years old when his father walked out of his life. In an interview with Q13 News in Seattle, Kenney explained that after that experience, he decided that when he had children of his own, he would raise them into good adults and make sure they didn’t have a fractured childhood. But he didn’t stop there.

Now 50, Kenney has a 29-year-old daughter and 27-year-old son who are living successful lives thanks to that decision he made many years before. However, even with an empty nest, Kenney realized he still had life lessons to pass on. After thinking about other young people in the world who have gone through the same unfortunate experience as he did, he decided to do something about it. In early April 2020, Kenney created a YouTube channel called “Dad, how do I?” and uploaded his first video, titled “How to tie a tie.” In the video, he gives a helpful hint for choosing a tie. Then he talks viewers through the process of how to tie a tie while demonstrating it on himself. As April progressed, Kenney uploaded a number of videos on other seemingly simple tasks, including how to unclog a sink, check the oil in a car, install a shelf, and even how to shave. As he continued uploading videos, he started to include dad jokes along the way.

“So today I’m going to show you how to use a stud finder,” Kenney begins in one video. “If you came here looking for help finding a boyfriend, that would be a different stud finder.” Kenney hopes that, by uploading these videos, he can be there for someone who doesn’t have a parent around to teach them these things. And in the course of just two months, it looks like he is already doing just that. At the end of May, Kenney’s channel had over 2 million subscribers and thousands of people have reached out to Kenney to share their own similar experiences and express their gratitude and appreciation for everything he’s doing.

STAY ON YOUR FEET 5 Steps to Fall-Proof Your Home Falls are the No. 1 cause of death for individuals over the age of 80. While many falls don’t cause injuries, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 3 million older people are treated for fall injuries every year. Falling once nearly doubles your chances of falling again, so it’s very important to take steps to prevent you or your older loved ones from falling at all. Most falls occur in the home. Here are the most dangerous fall zones in your home and how you can make them safer. 1. ENTRANCES — Have railings installed on both sides of the steps leading into the home. Make sure broken steps or cracks in the walkway are repaired right away. Change outdoor light bulbs as soon as they burn out so there’s always enough lighting to see clearly. 2. LIVING ROOMS AND BEDROOMS — Replace tables that have sharp edges with rounded corners. Remove glass tables and other breakable items from your living space. If there’s a piece of furniture that prevents you from being able to walk confidently across the room, push it against the wall or remove it entirely.

3. BATHROOM — Install safety bars around the toilet, bathtub, and shower. Make sure there are no-slip mats in the shower and on the bathroom floor. 4. HALLWAYS — Tack down rugs so the corners don’t become tripping hazards. Never leave cords in high-traffic areas. Install night lights in hallways so there’s enough light to see until the overhead lights are turned on. 5. KITCHEN — Place nonslip rugs on smooth flooring. Have everything in the kitchen moved to lower shelves so it can be reached without a stepstool. Fall-proofing your home is the just first step to avoiding a fall. Many falls are the result of poor balance or deteriorating strength. Regular exercise is necessary to improve or maintain strength and balance. Need help creating a safe workout routine? Call Horizon PT now! Your physical therapist can teach you life-saving fall prevention measures. Call 810-620-8042 and ask what you need to do to avoid a dangerous fall.
