STAY ON YOUR FEET 5 Steps to Fall-Proof Your Home Falls are the No. 1 cause of death for individuals over the age of 80. While many falls don’t cause injuries, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 3 million older people are treated for fall injuries every year. Falling once nearly doubles your chances of falling again, so it’s very important to take steps to prevent you or your older loved ones from falling at all. Most falls occur in the home. Here are the most dangerous fall zones in your home and how you can make them safer. 1. ENTRANCES — Have railings installed on both sides of the steps leading into the home. Make sure broken steps or cracks in the walkway are repaired right away. Change outdoor light bulbs as soon as they burn out so there’s always enough lighting to see clearly. 2. LIVING ROOMS AND BEDROOMS — Replace tables that have sharp edges with rounded corners. Remove glass tables and other breakable items from your living space. If there’s a piece of furniture that prevents you from being able to walk confidently across the room, push it against the wall or remove it entirely.
3. BATHROOM — Install safety bars around the toilet, bathtub, and shower. Make sure there are no-slip mats in the shower and on the bathroom floor. 4. HALLWAYS — Tack down rugs so the corners don’t become tripping hazards. Never leave cords in high-traffic areas. Install night lights in hallways so there’s enough light to see until the overhead lights are turned on. 5. KITCHEN — Place nonslip rugs on smooth flooring. Have everything in the kitchen moved to lower shelves so it can be reached without a stepstool. Fall-proofing your home is the just first step to avoiding a fall. Many falls are the result of poor balance or deteriorating strength. Regular exercise is necessary to improve or maintain strength and balance. Need help creating a safe workout routine?
