(And Symphonies, Upon Marital Compromise) Back in sixth grade, after the shortest summer vacation ever, we always had to write an essay about what we did for summer vacation. Remember that? Well, this is my summer vacation essay! consultant, Scott Manning, who broke down everything about our business. He pointed out things we were excelling at and things we wanted to improve upon. A Summer Full of Country Music and Sports

Without any breaks, we worked straight through until 3 p.m. Then, as a surprise, he had a limo pick us up and take us to get a one-hour massage. Afterwards, we went out to dinner and had a wonderful evening out in Nashville. We soon found out just how astounding Nashville can be. Since we had the next day free, we all slept in a little bit (I usually rise at 5:00 am), then spent the rest of the day walking down Broadway, one of the main “strips” in Nashville, although a more apt name for the area would be Bachelorette Party Capital of the World. We saw trolleys full of women with bridal sashes and veils every 15 feet, singing at the top of their lungs! It was hilarious. Before we started seeing evidence of bachelorette parties, though, the first thing we did was go to the Country Music Hall of Fame museum around 10 a.m. We saw all kinds of Elvis, country, and Western singer memorabilia, which was fun, then we realized the city’s love of music didn’t stop there. As we walked, we noticed every single bar had at least one live band. I say “at least” because one bar had three live bands — a rooftop band, a dining room band, and a bar band in the basement! Curiosity made us start bar-hopping all afternoon without drinking. We just wanted to hear the music. Afterwards, we saw the Grand Ole

No vacation is complete without a little business. In mid-June, Amy Beach, Michelle Marlow, my wife Mindy, and I went to Nashville, Tennessee, for a consultation with a company called Dental Success. We believe in constant and never-ending improvement (CANI), and it was great to actually go out of town to a seminar with the staff again. We got in late Wednesday night and rested up because the next day started at 7 a.m. We met with our

Opry, a famous weekly music show in Nashville. The biggest star we saw was Hank Williams’ grandson, but there were phenomenal performances there. It was a nice way to end our trip. The second trip we had in early July was, finally, all about vacationing — or at least about the Yankees. You may already know this, but baseball runs deep in Poupore blood. My father and uncles were all very good players. In fact, the Yankees tried to sign my Uncle Norm multiple times (he was a great pitcher), but he felt a calling to the priesthood. In any case, I wanted to see a Red Sox and Yankees game in-person, so we took a drive down to Boston.

CLEAN YOUR TEETH WHILE YOU CHEW MAINTAIN A HEALTHY SMILE NATURALLY

It is commonly known that certain foods, like those with lots of sugar, are bad for your teeth. However, did you know there are certain foods that can actually clean your teeth? It sounds impossible, but it’s true! These foods are called detergents. You may be thinking of the detergent that goes in your laundry, but that’s not the case here. Detergent foods are specific foods that clean your teeth naturally and keep your smile looking bright. What are detergent foods? Detergent foods are everyday edibles that have a crunchy or coarse texture. These foods act like bristles that scrub our teeth while we eat.

Detergent foods can remove excess materials from the enamel of your teeth without adding any sugars or fats in their place. These types of foods are more beneficial unprocessed and natural. They are typically low in acidity and have properties that help eliminate oral sugars that cling to your teeth and bring down saliva’s overall pH level. The higher the pH level, the higher the acidity levels in your mouth where bacteria can thrive. When should I eat detergent foods? Timing is very important when it comes to detergent foods. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth after every meal, but sometimes it’s just not possible or you don’t have access to a toothbrush. Detergent foods are perfect to eat right after you finish a meal or as a midday snack. That way, the detergent foods can rid your mouth of stuck-on food. Incorporating detergent foods into your diet is one of the easiest, most efficient ways to maintain a healthy smile. Their fibrous texture acts as a natural toothbrush, scrubbing away harmful materials from your teeth. But always remember, these foods aren’t a replacement for brushing and flossing. Research what foods fall into this category and give them a try!

Examples of these foods include, but are not limited to:

• • • • • • •

Carrots Apples

Plain popcorn (no salt, butter, or flavoring)

Celery Pears Lettuce

Cucumbers

On the way, we stopped in Albany to play golf. Then, we stopped in Lenox, Massachusetts, to attend Tanglewood, an outdoor musical venue and home to the Boston Symphony in the summer. Mindy was absolutely thrilled, especially after seeing a world renowned pianist named Yuja Wang perform a startlingly powerful Liszt concerto. Little ol’ me? I kinda wish I golfed a little longer. But, hey, you know what they say about happy wives. The next day, we walked around Boston, and there were art festivals going on, which we looked at before our Red Sox vs. Yankees game at Fenway Park. As a smaller stadium, it’s my favorite place to see a game, especially around the seventh inning when everyone sings “Sweet Caroline.” Standing around with Yankees gear, I thought I’d be a little scared for my life in Red Sox territory, but there were some other Yankee fans nearby, so I was somewhat at ease (strength in numbers and all that). Unfortunately, the Yankees lost in extra innings, but it was a very exciting game. Mindy said she was “happy for the Boston Fans because they were so pleased.” I say “Not so much!” But, all in all, my summer vacation feels like a winner in my book. When I see you next, tell me all about YOUR summer vacation! –Dr. Kevin Poupore

Directions 1. Add chicken to a large resealable bag. 2. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, 1 tbsp lemon juice, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Pour over chicken and seal. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. 3. Turn a grill to medium-high heat and add the chicken. Discard the marinade. Grill chicken 5–7 minutes per side or until fully cooked. 4. Combine the remaining lemon juice, tomatoes, garlic, and basil. Add salt and pepper, to taste. 5. Before taking the chicken off the grill, top each breast with a slice of mozzarella cheese. Cover and cook 2–3 minutes, then serve topped with the tomato mixture and grated Parmesan cheese.

Ingredients • 4 boneless and skinless chicken breasts, pounded to even thickness • 4 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp lemon juice, divided • 1/4 tsp pepper • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • 3 tomatoes, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped • Salt and pepper, to taste • 4 slices mozzarella cheese • Parmesan cheese, grated Fresh tomatoes and basil abound in August, practically begging to become bruschetta! How to Prevent Bad Breath PAGE 4

National Fresh Breath Day Is Here

Nobody wants to have bad breath, but reports say that over 80 million people suffer from chronic bad breath. If you struggle with bad breath or worry about developing it at some point in your life, you can do a few simple things to prevent and fix bad breath. And what better time to kick bad breath to the curb than on National Fresh Breath Day, Aug. 6. You can get started with these four tips. Brush your teeth and tongue. It’s no secret that brushing your teeth is an important part of dental hygiene, but it also helps prevent bad breath. Brushing at least two times a day will help remove plaque and food debris from your teeth. Don’t forget about your tongue, either! Bacteria can build up on the rough surface of your tongue, so the entire surface needs to be brushed to improve breath. Floss and use mouthwash. Another important habit you need to incorporate is flossing. Flossing helps remove food debris from spots your toothbrush can’t reach, which helps to remove odor-causing bacteria. Additionally, mouth rinse really only masks bad breath for a while. Instead, did you know that rinsing with green or black tea can suppress the growth of bacteria that causes bad breath? Give it a try. 4 WAYS TO STOP BAD BREATH

Visit your dentist. It can be difficult to figure out where your bad breath comes from, especially if it’s chronic. If you notice your breath worsening, you should schedule an appointment with

your dentist so they can evaluate your symptoms. You may have an underlying condition causing your bad breath.

Use sugar-free gum or mints. Many people turn to gum or mints when they need a quick solution for bad breath, but choosing the wrong product can lead to worsening effects over time. If you use gum or mints, choose a sugar-free option. They will help stimulate your saliva, which will help wash away food debris.
