this unique establishment has been captivating locals and visitors alike since its opening in June 2023. Owned and operated by the talented artist Bryan Weems, Against the Grain is more than just an art gallery; it’s a hub of diverse artistic expression. The name “Against the Grain” speaks volumes about Weems’ approach to artistry. He describes himself as a little different, and indeed, his portfolio reflects this mantra. From painting murals to crafting wood sculptures with a chainsaw, Weems defies convention, embracing a wide range of mediums and techniques. His versatility is evident in his ability to seamlessly transition from painting windows murals to creating intricate wood- burning portraits. He started wood burning when he was 16, just line drawing. He worked at Delta Wire here in town, and then when the ice storm came in ’94, he started doing tree work. For years, he did tree work for the head of the Harvest Society, Jim Auburn, Northeast tree service out of Madison, Mississippi. He then subcontracted for himself until Hurricane Katrina hit. After that, Weems said the reality shows started coming out, and he started watching the chainsaw carving show and figured he could do that. Weems said, “I just started trying it, and really, nobody showed me. I

just picked it up and went to doing it and been doing it ever since.” What sets Against the Grain apart is not just the artwork itself but the experience it offers to patrons. Weems believes that his customers keep returning not only because of their affinity for collecting art but also because they appreciate witnessing his artistic evolution over time. With a humble desire for continuous improvement, Weems strives to refine his craft, honing his skills in anatomy, facial expressions, and beyond. One of the highlights of Against the Grain’s journey was its involvement in the production of the Hallmark movie “Every Time My Bell Rings It Rings.” Weems contributed two pieces of his artwork to be featured in a scene filmed at St. Mary’s Basilica in Natchez, showcasing the gallery’s ability to deliver custom and distinctive pieces that leave a lasting impression. As Against the Grain continues to captivate audiences with its innovative creations, Weems invites art enthusiasts to connect with the gallery through social media. For those eager to take art lessons, book paint and craft parties, and experience the magic of Against the Grain Art Gallery firsthand, a visit to its physical location at 256 Delta Ave. promises an unforgettable artistic journey. Easter, in its essence, is a Christian festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It marks the culmination of the Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, followed by Maundy Thursday, remembering the Last Supper, and Good Friday, reflecting on the crucifixion. However, beyond its religious roots, Easter has evolved into a multicultural celebration embraced by people of various faiths and backgrounds. Central to Easter customs is the Easter egg, a timeless symbol of new life and fertility. Decorating eggs, whether through dyeing, painting, or intricate designs, has been a cherished practice across cultures for centuries. The egg, with its hard exterior concealing the potential for life within, mirrors the themes of resurrection and renewal central to Easter. Easter bunnies, another ubiquitous symbol, trace their origins to German folklore, where the “Osterhase” was believed to bring eggs and sweets to children. Today, the Easter bunny represents the joy and innocence associated with this festive season, delighting both young and old alike. For many, Easter Sunday is a day of gathering with loved ones, sharing meals, and partaking in various

traditions. From attending church services to indulging in sumptuous feasts and engaging in egg hunts, Easter fosters a sense of community and togetherness. Beyond the festivities, Easter invites moments of reflection and spiritual contemplation. It serves as a reminder of the triumph of light over darkness, hope over despair, and love over death. It’s a time to ponder on personal growth, forgiveness, and the promise of new beginnings. In recent times, Easter has also become synonymous with the arrival of spring, marking the end of winter’s chill and the onset of warmer, brighter days. As flowers bloom, trees regain their foliage, and nature awakens from its slumber, Easter symbolizes the renewal of the earth itself, mirroring the spiritual renewal celebrated by millions around the globe. In essence, Easter transcends religious boundaries, uniting people in a shared celebration of life, love, and the promise of rejuvenation. Whether observed through religious rituals, cultural traditions, or simply as a time to cherish with family and friends, Easter continues to inspire hope and joy in the hearts of all who celebrate it.

38 New Members Inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society By JASALYN K. LUCAS

Clarksdale, Mississippi – On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the Spring 2024 induction ceremony for the Alpha Omicron Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) took place in the Pinnacle. During the event, 38 individuals were recognized and welcomed into the honor society. PTK, founded on the Coahoma Community College (CCC) campus in the fall of 1988, has been actively serving the college community for almost three decades. As the largest honor society in higher education, with 1,350 chapters at two-year colleges worldwide, Phi Theta Kappa is dedicated to acknowledging and fostering academic excellence among

students in two-year colleges. To commence the ceremony, PTK Vice President Devin Mabry extended a greeting, followed by an invocation delivered by Selina Clay, PTK Reporter, and an occasion address by Niya Harris, a PTK member. The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society ceremony followed the acknowledgment of individuals who met specific criteria: completion of 15 semester hours at Coahoma, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above, and demonstrating impeccable conduct and character. Tre’Shawn Malone, the Graduation Coach at Clarksdale High School, delivered the keynote address. Malone, hailing from Jonestown, Mississippi, boasts a considerable tenure in the field of education. He is a graduate of both Coahoma Agriculture High School and Coahoma Community College. Malone earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Delta State University, where he also completed his master’s degree. He kicked off his speech by talking about comfort zones, something every college student can relate to. “Life’s journey really does begin and end within those zones we’re comfortable in. But here’s the thing:

if we stay snug in that comfort, we’re not going to tap into our full potential,” said Malone. “The power to shift our mindset lies within us, and that’s what can turn our biggest dreams into reality.” Sure, there’ll be hurdles along the way, but changing how we think and building confidence means we’re growing and moving forward.” “As you navigate through your college journey, you’ll find that as you grow and develop, so will the opportunities around you. It’s up to you to seize them,” said Malone. “Sure, you’ll encounter challenges along the way, but it’s those challenges that push you to grow and expand your horizons.” Malone concluded his speech by encouraging students that their potential extends far beyond their comfort zone. It’s when they step outside of what’s familiar to them is when they will discover what they’re capable of achieving. Students cannot be afraid to take risks and try new things because that’s where the magic happens. The Phi Theta Kappa scholars transitioned into their new roles as honored society members by gracefully walking across the stage to receive their certificates as Malundra Jones, the PTK president, offered special recognition and words of encouragement to each inductee as they embarked on this

new chapter of their academic journey. Wrapping up the ceremony, Dr. ValmadgeT.Towner,CCCPresident, extended his congratulations to the inductees and expressed gratitude to several essential members of the CCC community. “I want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this occasion. Each one of you, the inductees, has demonstrated exceptional dedication to academic excellence and service, embodying the values that Phi Theta Kappa stands for,” said Towner. “As you move forward, remember the importance of lifelong learning and the power of collaboration. Stay curious, remain humble, and never underestimate the impact you can have on the world around you,” said Towner. figure in education and service, sought to share this positive news with Floyd Ingram, the editor of the Clarksdale Press Register. Shockingly, her attempt was met with refusal, escalating into a distressing altercation that saw Mrs. Rhymes subjected to insults and threats of excessive physical force, leading to her forced removal from the premises. This egregious episode not only sparked outrage but also bred deep-seated mistrust within the community, severely undermining their ability to collaborate effectively. Despite the gravity of the situation, no member of the Clarksdale Press Register has made any meaningful effort to address or reconcile the issue, further exacerbating tensions. Driven by a shared vision of fostering a culture of collaboration, support, and unity, citizens have taken proactive steps to promote these principles within their community. The primary objective of the meeting was to confront a significant obstacle hindering municipal progress: the influence wielded by powerful community figures who actively contribute to the community’s decline. Many citizens feel that the Clarksdale Press Register has systematically worked to undermine public support for municipal efforts,

achieving a degree of success in their mission. After enduring decades of what they describe as lackluster representation, residents are now resolute in their determination to address the systemic issues perpetuated by community figures who sabotage progressive developments and positive change in the city. Failure to address these concerns, they argue, will only deepen existing rifts and impede progress. As the community continues to navigate these challenges, its members remain steadfast in their commitment to confronting systemic issues and paving the way toward a more inclusive and prosperous future for Clarksdale. ____ *To report a spelling or grammar error or inaccurate information, please email us at info@ clarksdaleadvocate.com.

April Fools’ Day: The Day of Pranks and Laughter By CA Staff Writer

fun. But how did this tradition begin, and why do we continue to celebrate it today? The origins of April Fools’ Day are somewhat mysterious, with several theories attempting to explain its inception. One popular belief traces its roots back to the 16th century when France transitioned from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar under King Charles IX. The change moved the start of the new year from April 1st to January 1st. However, not everyone received the news promptly, and those who continued to celebrate the new year in April became the subject of ridicule and pranks, earning them the title of “April Fools.” Another theory suggests that April Fools’ Day is linked to ancient Roman festivals, such as Hilaria, which were celebrated with disguises and masquerades. These festivities often involved playful deception and satire, similar to the pranks commonly associated with April 1st. Regardless of its origins, April Fools’ Day has evolved into a global phenomenon, with people of all ages eagerly anticipating the opportunity to pull off clever tricks and hoaxes. From harmless practical jokes to elaborate pranks, the creativity displayed on this day knows no bounds.

In the age of the internet and social media, April Fools’ Day has taken on new dimensions. Tech companies, in particular, have become known for their elaborate and often humorous announcements on April 1st. From fake product launches to absurd software updates, these companies embrace the spirit of the day to engage with their audiences in a playful manner. However, while the intention behind April Fools’ Day is to spread joy and laughter, it’s essential to remember the importance of consent and sensitivity. Not all pranks are harmless, and it’s crucial to consider the feelings and well- being of others before pulling off a joke. What may seem funny to one person could be hurtful or distressing to another. As we celebrate April Fools’ Day, let’s embrace the spirit of camaraderie and laughter while exercising empathy and kindness. Whether it’s a clever prank or a simple joke among friends, let’s use this day as an opportunity to create moments of joy and connection. After all, a good laugh is something we can all appreciate, especially in times of uncertainty and challenge.

to steal money, the perpetrator callously unleashed a barrage of gunfire, striking the owner before fleeing the scene. Despite receiving prompt medical attention and being rushed to a nearby hospital, the victim succumbed to their injuries.
