later, and he said, ‘Are you saved now ?’ ‘No,’ I said, ‘1 cannot honestly say that I am.’ He said again, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved,’ and shortly after he went down; and there, alone in the night, and with two miles o f water under me, I believed. I am John Harper’s last convert.” —o— March 16, 1930 Peter, a Great Evangelist Matt. 4:18-20 ; 16:16. S uggestive O rder of S ervice Hymn: “ Onward, Christian Soldiers.” Invocation. Hymn: “Am I a Soldier, of the Cross?” Leader’s Remarks. (See helps below.) Reports on Life of Peter by members previously assigned. (One week in ad vance of this meeting assign to different members topics on the activities of Peter, requesting them to tell the story in their own words.) Closing Hymn: “Full Surrender.” Benediction. * * * L esson S urvey The study of the life o f Peter is one of the most interesting and helpful character studies contained in the Word of God. Peter manifests so many characteristics similar to those o f .believers today, that anyone who will study his life as por-| trayed in the Gospels, Acts, and the Epis tles bearing his name, cannot help but re ceive a great spiritual blessing, especially as he discovers the secret o f Peter’s vic tory over his old fleshly nature. The Scripture assigned for today’s topic covers only the call and confession of Peter. The one thing noticeable in the call of Peter that contributed to his be coming a great evangelist, was his obe dience in forsaking all to follow Jesus, who promised to promote him from the common occupation o f an ordinary fisher man, to that of a soul-saver. Peter’s bold confession showed his zeal and earnest ness, though he later gave way to the assault o f Satan and denied his Lord. Peter’s first appearance in the Gospel history is found in John 1 :35-42, where Andrew findeth his brother Simon (Peter). His life falls into two parts, namely: From his call to the ascension of Christ, and from the ascension to the close of his earthly life. Peter has been styled, the prince of the Apostles. He is always named first in every list of them, and was their common spokesman. He was hopeful, bold, confident, courageous, frank, impulsive, energetic, vigorous, Responsive Reading: 2 Peter 1. 3. Men need to be saved. Rom. 3:23; Isa. 53:6; Jer. 17:9. 4. God has ordained the salvation of men through the agency of men. Acts 10: 3-6, 22. 5. Soul-saving is the great business of God. Gen. 3:8, 9; Luke 19:10. 6. Every believer in Jesus Christ as Saviour, is constituted a servant. John 15:16. 7. Servants are called to be soul-win ners. John 17:18. 8. Soul-saving is the most blessed ser vice ever committed to men. Dan. 12:3. 9. The joy o f this service is beyond compare. Psa. 126:6, 10. This business is a success. Isa, 55: 10, 11. 11. There is no excuse that any servant can offer' for failure to engage in this business. Jas. 4 :17. 12. The field for this service is the whole world. Matt. 13:38. 13. The time for this service is now.- John 9 :4. 14. The wages for this service are assured. John 4:36. 15. There are difficulties in the service, but none that are insurmountable. Eph. 3:20; 2 Cor. 9:8. 16. Wist ye not that ye must be about your Father’s business? Luke 2:49. As to how to win others to Christ, it is o f first importance that we ourselves have a personal experience. Just as a salesman must first be convinced of the value of goods he endeavors to sell, so must the Christian know that he himself is saved and be able to say, “I know whom I have believed” (2 Tim. 1:12). He must live a pure, prayerful and purposeful life if he is to successfully win others. He must have a “Thus sayeth the Lord” for every objection that the unbe liever raises. A unique folder entitled, “ Personal Worker’s Outfit,” giving - per tinent passages to use in dealing with the unsaved, convenient to paste inside of a Testament, may be purchased from the Biola Book Room for ten cents per dozen, 75 cents per 100. Each member o f your society ought to carry a copy of the New Testament with this outfit. ♦ * * S ide -L ights His Last Message, and Last Convert .— Four years after the Titanic went down, a young Scotchman rose in a meeting in Hamilton, Canada, and said: “I am a sur vivor of the Titanic. When I was drift ing alone on a spar on that awful night, the tide brought Mr. John Harper, of Glasgow, also on a piece of wreck, near me. ‘Man,’ he said, ‘are you saved?’ ‘No,’ I said, ‘I am not.’ He replied, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.’ The waves bore him away; but, strange to say, brought him back a little

A Salesman Meeting B y E lsie W . W ells

This practical topic may be treated best by special reports on 2 Tim. 2:15, by Howard W. Pope, or some other good textbook on soul-winning. Learn how to be good salesmen for Christ. Have pre pared a set of objections given by people when asked to become Christians. Let the Endeavorers discover or discuss how to meet each objection. It may be wise to ask the pastor to take charge of this ser vice. This meeting will be a failure un less definite plans are made actually to win other young people to Christ. * * * L esson S urvey The Old Testament reference for to day’s topic should close at the middle of the second verse, for we are still living in the “acceptable year o f the Lord,” and have not yet come to “the day of ven geance of our God.” Christ, concerning whom this prophecy was written, clearly, taught this when He stood up in the syna gogue, and, reading this prophecy, stopped when He came to the middle of the sec ond verse. Dr. Scofield in a note on this ^passage which portrays the two advents of our Lord, writes: “ Observe that Jesus suspended the reading o f this passage in the synagogue at Nazareth (Lk. 4:16-21) at the comma in the middle o f Isa. 61:2. The first ad vent, therefore, opened the day of grace, , “the acceptable year o f Jehovah,” but does not fulfill the day of vengeance. That will be taken up when Messiah re turns (2 Thess. 1 :7-10; cf. Isa. 34:8 ; 35 : 4-10). The last verse, taken with the 4th, gives the historic connection: the ven geance precedes the regathering of Israel, and synchronizes with the day o f the Lord (Isa. 2:10-22; Rev. 19:11-21; also Isa. 63:1-6),” The Lord Jesus, who came “to seek and to save that which was lost” by giving His life on Calvary’s cross, left but one commission to His disciples: “Go . . . make disciples.” We can give no better reasons as to why we ought to win others to Christ than those found in the Bible and listed in the book and correspondence course, “ Personal Evangelism and Practical Work,” by T. C. Horton, founder of the International Fishermen’s Club and one o f the founders of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. They are as follows: 1. This is a lost world. Rom. 3:10-23; Rom. 8:8. 2. God desires the salvation o f men. 1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Pet. 3:9.
