APRIL 2024
The King of Dad Jokes Laughter, Linens, and ‘I Believe I Can Clean’
When does a dad joke become a dad joke? When it becomes ... apparent.
clean and press” when that song plays on the radio. Even though he retired this past December, the crew still peaks around the corner for him when that song comes on. My girls also get in on the clowning around. Thanks to my brother-in-law, we’ve started seeking opportunities to scare each other with a loud “wobbledeegoo!” (He scared the daylights out of my mother-in-law as she came around the corner with that once, and it just stuck.) My daughters now love to try to get us. My wife is a pretty easy target, so they make an extra effort to plot the best methods to surprise me. I commend and appreciate all the work they put into it. In general, I’m a bit more serious. Humor doesn’t always come naturally to me — hence all the dad jokes — but I’ve found using a little comedy in a tense situation can take the edge off and allow everyone to move forward. At work, we like having a little fun when appropriate. As with any job, some days are more challenging than others, and on those days, some singing and dad
jokes make it a better environment. A laugh can make a big difference when you get that 30th linen in a row to press. We strive to create a tailored experience for our customers. So, if we know a regular enjoys catching up, we throw a joke their way. We are a close-knit team here, with some of our staff being second or third- generation employees. Having good relationships is one of our cornerstones. I try to make everyone feel welcome, and humor has a way of breaking down walls or releasing pressure. Over the years, my dad jokes have become expected by family and coworkers alike. Though I don’t always elicit rolling laughter from my daughters, I usually get them. And I think I’ve earned the shirt custom-made by my sister, which features the Periodic Table and the words, “I tell dad jokes … periodically.” –Kyle Matthews
My daughters weren’t too impressed with that one, but my brand of dad humor has become a staple in our household and around work. I am the King of Dad Jokes, and while I don’t have a comedy database in my head, I am always ready with a new gag. April is loaded with holidays dedicated to laughter. From April Fools’ Day to National Humor Month, it’s as good a time as any to gather up your best comedy bits and have a good chuckle. Humor runs in my family. My brother-in-law has mastered the art of taking a well-known song and rewriting the lyrics to express any thought comedically. Whatever it is, you can bet he will put it to a familiar tune and have us crying with laughter. Along the same musical lines, my dad started a little tradition at Janet Davis Cleaners that lives on today. We have a repertoire of hits we’ve rewritten. Instead of “I believe I can fly,” the team sings, “I believe I can

We accumulate a lot of stuff as we go through life, and it can pile up quickly. For practical and safety reasons, it’s good to reduce the clutter. If you aren’t sure what to keep, try following these seven rules for decluttering your home. 1. THE HOUSE FIRE RULE: If you’re organizing your belongings and unsure if you should throw something away, ask yourself, “If it burned away in a fire, would I care?” If you wouldn’t mind, you probably wouldn’t mind throwing it out. 2. THE 20/20 RULE: Consider giving away the things that cost under $20 and would take less than 20 minutes to replace. Many people keep too much stuff “just in case” they might need it later. 3. THE BOX RULE: If you’re going through your stuff and feel overwhelmed, put it all in a box and store it in your garage or basement. After six months, scan the box and donate everything you don’t need. 4. THE INVESTMENT RULE: Memories are more important than objects. A trip to the movies with a friend is always more fun than a new T-shirt. So, be proactive about decluttering by buying more experiences with loved ones instead of more things. 7 Golden Rules For a Streamlined Living Space
Trust Janet Davis Cleaners With Your Delicate Tablecloths FOCUS ON FAMILY, NOT STAINS, THIS SPRING
Spring brings people together and is a season of celebrations. With
big holidays like Easter, Passover, and Ramadan, it’s time to dust off your best tablecloth for all the family gatherings. Often, the most festive tablecloths are also the most delicate and the trickiest to clean. Thankfully, we are cleaning experts and know how to be gentle with your linens so you can focus on the family fun.
Linen tablecloths require cold water for a wash but can undergo shrinkage if dried incorrectly. Stains from holiday meals of the past can become embedded in the fabric if you don’t blot them correctly, so it’s best to take them to a professional. Every linen is different, and we know how to select the correct technique to get them cleaned and pressed to perfection. Our customers say it best! Marie Zelasko has been bringing her delicate and more complex items to Janet Davis Cleaners for many years. Among the items she’s entrusted us with are her tablecloths. We have cared for her cleaning needs with focus and attention to detail, and we are so thankful she continues to allow us to make her favorite items sparkle. Marie said, “For 38 years, we have appreciated Janet Davis’ impeccable service and extraordinary skills. They have cleaned and/or laundered silk quilts, formal wear, dress shirts, tablecloths, down coats, and more. Each fresh, expertly pressed garment arrives neatly hung or packaged. Our home pick-up and delivery are reliable. We have been very grateful for the care and attention we have been given from Janet Davis Cleaners.” We know how much a beautiful, clean, and pressed tablecloth can add to your favorite holiday family gatherings. So, as you prepare for the seasonal activities, bring your tablecloths to Janet Davis Cleaners today so you can keep painting easter eggs and creating a memorable meal. Your linens are worth celebrating!
5. THE HOME RULE: Everything you own
should have a home. It could be a drawer, a room, or a designated spot on the counter. If it doesn’t have a place in your house and is just being stored, get rid of it.
6. THE OTHER PEOPLE RULE: When buying something, consider why you’re making the purchase. Is it for you or someone else? For example, a new phone might have better specs, but is it worth the money? And if you’re buying for someone else, consider if it’s something they really need. 7. THE 90% RULE: Love everything you own; only own your favorite things. Whether buying new things or decluttering, only save things that bring you joy at least 90% of the time. Remember, you own your things — they don’t own you. Don’t be afraid to give or throw away what you don’t need. If you follow these rules and declutter your home, you can free yourself from the burden of junk.

As winter fades away, making room for warmer weather, it’s time to ditch our heavy coats in favor of lighter outwear. However, you must store your favorite coats properly over the summer so they don’t fall prey to moths. We know what it takes to preserve your warm clothes for years to come. As you make room in your closet for summer clothing, follow these three tips for winter coat storage to keep them looking their best. CLEAN THEM FIRST Moths are attracted to the stuff on your coat, like body oils, food, or anything else your clothes may have picked up, not the clothing itself. So, cleaning your coats before stowing them away is essential. Most coats require a thorough pre-spotting but gentle cleaning, typically not in hot water as it causes issues with colors and embellishments. Wool coats and the older coats in your collection likely need dry cleaning. Cleaning your garments before the summer also removes any moth eggs that may be there. BEAT THE MOTHS, SAVE YOUR COATS 3 Tips for Winter Coat Storage
CLEAN YOUR CLOSET The space in which you store your garments also matters. It’s a good idea to clean your closet and drawers before storing clothes for the season. To keep all your clothes their best throughout all seasons, clean out your shelves, drawers, and floors at least twice yearly. You also want to pick a cool, dark, and dry space. Humidity and direct sunlight can damage your garments. HOW TO STORE It’s best not to keep your coat in a plastic dry cleaning bag over the summer. Instead, you can opt for hangers with wide, round ends to preserve the shape of the shoulders. You can wrap your wool coat in light cotton fabric to keep it looking fresh and new. If you are low on room to hang items, use a storage bin with acid-free tissue paper. Just don’t overfill those containers. Let us take the chill out of winter coat storage. We work with winter clothing a lot, so we can pick the best method to wash your coats before you put them away. We offer complimentary seasonal storage if you need a clean, well-secured, climate-controlled space for your items. We can protect your coats until the cold weather returns.
The hanger storage is still an issue, and we will continue collecting your hangers! Instead of sending them to the landfill, let us put them to use. We offer a cardboard hanger recycling tote you can request to fill with the hangers you no longer need. It can also help you organize your closet. Thank you for all your help. Soaking in the heated waters of a hot spring is an experience you’ll want

WHERE YOU CAN FIND HOT SPRINGS The western part of the U.S. has a higher concentration of hot springs, but if you look hard enough, you can find one anywhere. Some hot springs are deep in the mountains, so you’ll have to hike in. They often have specular views and are worth the journey. If you don’t want to trek up a mountain, you’ll find many spas built around hot springs that offer amenities besides the spring, such as restaurants and saunas. So, the next time you’re traveling, locate the hot springs in your area and put a visit on your itinerary!
HOW HOT SPRINGS WORK Hot springs are heated by geothermal energy. Water meets volcanic hot rocks, resulting in boiling mineral-rich water. Regions far away from volcanic activity can also have hot springs; those occur when a spring runs so deep that it hits rocks close to the Earth’s crust. These rocks are naturally very hot, which then heats the water.
