Janet Davis Cleaners - April 2024

As winter fades away, making room for warmer weather, it’s time to ditch our heavy coats in favor of lighter outwear. However, you must store your favorite coats properly over the summer so they don’t fall prey to moths. We know what it takes to preserve your warm clothes for years to come. As you make room in your closet for summer clothing, follow these three tips for winter coat storage to keep them looking their best. CLEAN THEM FIRST Moths are attracted to the stuff on your coat, like body oils, food, or anything else your clothes may have picked up, not the clothing itself. So, cleaning your coats before stowing them away is essential. Most coats require a thorough pre-spotting but gentle cleaning, typically not in hot water as it causes issues with colors and embellishments. Wool coats and the older coats in your collection likely need dry cleaning. Cleaning your garments before the summer also removes any moth eggs that may be there. BEAT THE MOTHS, SAVE YOUR COATS 3 Tips for Winter Coat Storage

CLEAN YOUR CLOSET The space in which you store your garments also matters. It’s a good idea to clean your closet and drawers before storing clothes for the season. To keep all your clothes their best throughout all seasons, clean out your shelves, drawers, and floors at least twice yearly. You also want to pick a cool, dark, and dry space. Humidity and direct sunlight can damage your garments. HOW TO STORE It’s best not to keep your coat in a plastic dry cleaning bag over the summer. Instead, you can opt for hangers with wide, round ends to preserve the shape of the shoulders. You can wrap your wool coat in light cotton fabric to keep it looking fresh and new. If you are low on room to hang items, use a storage bin with acid-free tissue paper. Just don’t overfill those containers. Let us take the chill out of winter coat storage. We work with winter clothing a lot, so we can pick the best method to wash your coats before you put them away. We offer complimentary seasonal storage if you need a clean, well-secured, climate-controlled space for your items. We can protect your coats until the cold weather returns.

The hanger storage is still an issue, and we will continue collecting your hangers! Instead of sending them to the landfill, let us put them to use. We offer a cardboard hanger recycling tote you can request to fill with the hangers you no longer need. It can also help you organize your closet. Thank you for all your help.
