Southside Freeway An existential threat to the Arlington campus emerged in early 1960 in the form of the proposed Southside Freeway which would have bisected the Arlington campus. The Club got wind of an Arlington County “thoroughfare plan” via various newspaper articles. The subsequent investigation and lobbying efforts, led by of Rear Admiral Paul B. Nibecker, the Planning Committee Chairman, were successful in squelching the plan. To learn more about the Southside Freeway, click here .

WNHGO: Women’s Nine Hole Golf Organization

On 7 October, our members challenged Brad Myers in the annual Beat the Pro tournament in Fairfax in which Brad was only allowed to use a 7-iron, a sand wedge, and a putter (and we used our handicap strokes). All the winners are shown in the picture. Thanks to Brad for being a good sport, and also to Shanon Hardy and Debbie Williams for planning a terrific event. WNHGO hosted its last tournament of the year — The Fall Fest Pumpkin Spice Golf Girls — in Arlington this year, and the autumn weather was spectacular! 28 golfers played a “Scramble … With Strings Attached” format on October 24. Each team was allowed to use an 18” piece of string once to enhance a shot of their choice (without the string length counting as a stroke). The winning team used the 18” string to birdie White 4. The team of Elizabeth Deegan, Kristin Grohs, Libby Langworthy, and Norah Moseley took first place with a bogey free round of 32. Second place winners were Lola Beggs, Andrea Schnappauf, Elizabeth Shortino, and Debbie Williams. The team of Susan Kelly, Connie Peduzzi, Lillie Simpkins, and Joan Snodgrass took third place. Andrea Schnappauf was closest to the pin on White 3, and Norah Moseley was closest to the pin on White 9. Connie Peduzzi chipped in on White 6. Many thanks to Pro Eddie Navarro for organizing the teams and shotgun start, and to the Club’s excellent catering team for a delicious pumpkin-themed luncheon, as well as Moira Flanders and Libby Langworthy for running a really fun event.

The Fall Luncheon is November 18 in Arlington, at 11:30 am. Click here to register. Contact Mary Helmantoler, Penny Wood, or Jo Ellen Fowler with questions. Winter Golf starts on November 1. Sign-up sheets are posted in the Fairfax & Arlington locker rooms. The cost is $10, and you must play a minimum of 10 rounds before March 31 at ANCC courses with at least one other person. For more infor- mation, contact Mary Fields. WNHGO accepts new members all year. Please contact Membership Chair Shannon Bibb (618-979-3696) for more information.

WGO-18: Women’s 18 Hole Golf Organization

The 2025 golf season finished with fun play and tourna- ments for the 18-hole ladies! The Act of Love Fundraising tournament raised money for breast cancer research, with the team of Jae Kim and Beth Baynes taking top honors with a net 62. The always fun Halloween tournament scramble was won by the team of Linda Nguyen, Jae Kim, Jane Tuck and Barbara Lancaster, and the President’s Plate Tournament, sponsored by President Cindy Loughran, was won by Jae Kim with a sensational 40 points. As the season draws to a close and a new slate of officers elected, the WGO-18 ladies would like to thank outgoing president Cindy Loughran, who has done a wonderful job leading the team for four years, along with her Executive Committee, Vice-President Leda Davis, Treasurer Maile Fries, Secretary Didi Summers, Sherrie Balko and Cheryl Daly who oversaw tournaments, and Jeanne Farris and Pat Golembieski who ran Play Days. Cindy and her team also send a huge shout-out to the ex- cellent ANCC golf professionals, greenskeepers and staff who helped tremendously this season. Informal play will continue throughout the winter, with the full season beginning next April. If you’re interested in meeting a fun group of golfers and keeping your golf going throughout the winter or getting ready for next spring, please contact Membership Chair Ruth Daly at ruthadaly@verizon.net.

CWGO: Career Women’s Golf Organization

While the official CWGO season is winding down, we are excited to report the results of two of our most important events of the year. In the middle of October, the CWGO held its Working Women’s Offsite – Fall Outing (the “WWOFO”) in Wintergreen, Virginia. After two days of fun group and individual play, the new WWOFO “Queen”, Cathy Van der Maarel, was pronounced, taking over the reins from Liz Kretovic. Thank you to Liz and her Court for organizing such a thoughtful and fun weekend for us all. Our new Queen Cathy is responsible for organizing WWOFO 2026 (which she promises will be spicy!) and for encouraging general merriment amongst our ranks for the next year. Long live the Queen! We also recently held our annual charity tournament to raise funds for the preparation of care bags for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer at local hospitals. This is always a very special event and our group often receives heartfelt letters of appreciation from the recipients of the bags. The winners of this year’s event were Jennifer Lednicky, Amy DeWitt, Linda Smith and Emily Graves. Our final golf event is our Fall Finale on Saturday, 1 November in ARL. This a four-person scramble tournament. Teams will be assigned so all you need to do is sign up! Please click here to register. Finally, our End-of-Year dinner is Wednesday, 5 November at Arlington. Please come celebrate a wonderful season of friendship and amazing golf. Registration links can be found here .
