designed borders of block planting either side of hydrangeas, topiary, lavender, climbing roses and grasses to create timeless appeal. This planting palette ensures flowers from February through to October, starting with miniature daffodils, alliums with lavender, roses and followed by the blooms of Hydrangea StrongAnnabelle. The flower heads of the latter look magical left to stand throughout the winter dusted in frost. 4. SAVVY MAINTENANCE A key element is to provide evergreen structure; this means that even in the depths of winter the large borders look good with foliage colour and not masses of bare earth. Those plants that deliver this focus are the Carex Everest - low grasses which line the edge, along with Taxus (Yew cones) and lavender. In turn this makes for less maintenance as weeds struggle to take hold as the space is covered in planting. An annual mulch is all that is required after spring bulb planting in September/ October to keeps weeds to a minimum underneath the hydrangeas. We were careful to consider this,so the maintenance regime was not demanding and suited our client’s lifestyle needs. 5. MATERIALS MATTER When choosing decorative elements within your space, try to reflect the architecture and hortus loci. Traditional period homes look good using stone or metalwork- think rustic obelisks and dolly tubs for country cottages, wrought iron and black planters for smart townhouses.
