September/October 2022

We all live very busy lives. Most of us get up in the morning, get ready for work, work for eight or more hours, drive home, make dinner, engage in an activity, rest, and repeat. It seems like there’s little time for much else, and this feeling can be amplified for those of us with children. On Sept. 16, we acknowledge Working Parents Day, which is a day to recognize those parents who continually sacrifice and work hard to provide for their families. These days, many parents don’t have the luxury of staying home with their children. Those who can are incredibly lucky, and their children are, too! But most of us know we have to work diligently while also helping to raise our children. It can be incredibly difficult at times, but we have to rise up and stay strong for the sake of our kids. When things get tough, it’s imperative to develop strategies to make the situation easier for everyone involved. One way I’ve maintained my sanity and composure as a working parent is by staying organized at home. When we aren’t organized at home, we have much more to stress over. We have to worry about making sure rooms are clean and meals are made. Staying organized removes much of that stress, but it has to be a team effort. That’s why you need to create a routine for your children. When kids don’t have a routine, they usually aren’t happy. They struggle to learn our expectations and don’t always know good from bad. When you set expectations and keep them, your kids will be much happier. Sometimes I’ll talk to parents and they’ll tell me their kids are struggling to sleep, so I ask them what they are doing to help them. As parents, we run the show, not our kids. We create routines so they eat on time, sleep on time, and take care of their homework and daily responsibilities. When kids don’t get enough sleep or food, they become unhappy, which in turn makes us unhappy. Routines make all the difference in the world. Another key area to focus on is taking time for yourself. It’s difficult to do and it’s common for parents to think they need to put their children first. When you take care of yourself, you’re taking care of your body and your needs so you can be effective in life, thus becoming a better parent FIND TIME FOR YOURSELF On Working Parents Day

for your children. Your psyche and stress tolerance get an added boost when you’re healthy and take care of yourself. You shouldn’t be hard on yourself or feel guilty for taking care of your needs. Many people struggle to carve out time for themselves, though, and this usually occurs when they’re not getting help from others. I was fortunate enough that my parents were available to help me when I needed them, but other options are available if your parents can’t help. Become friends with your children’s friends’ parents and set up times when you will watch their kids and they will watch yours. This way both sets of parents get a break and can enjoy an evening doing what they want to do. Finding strong support groups is critical in carving out time for yourself. Our children are the greatest joys in our lives, and it’s no wonder we do everything in our power to ensure they live happy lives. For Working Parents Day, try to find some time to rekindle one of your passions or spend time with your significant other. Taking care of yourself will help you become a better parent in the long run.

Want to Finish Your Treatment Fast?

YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR PART

Nobody wants to be in orthodontic treatment for an extended period of time. Ideally, we want to finish treatment as quickly as possible, and that’s just how we design our orthodontic plans for each patient. Each treatment plan is designed with the idea

Since you need to wear your aligners for up to 22 hours each day, it’s important to put them back in your mouth as soon as possible after eating. Set timers to ensure you remember: 15 minutes for a snack, 30 minutes for lunch, and an hour for dinner. Also make sure you

that it will be quick and efficient while providing our patients with the best results possible. While we do everything in our power to speed up the process of treatment, there are things you can do at home to finish your treatment as planned.

brush, floss, and rinse your teeth before putting your aligners back in. Once your aligners are back in, use the chewies to close the air bubbles between your aligners and teeth.

Additionally, you need to change your aligners as prescribed. Set reminders and make sure your aligners fit before changing them. If you lose an aligner, move on to the next one and wear it for a full week. If you’re going on vacation, bring an extra set with you.

One of the most important things you can do is wear your aligners for the recommended amount of time each day. This means you need to keep them in your mouth for 20–22 hours every day. You also

need to ensure you continue to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day. Whenever you brush your teeth, you should also make an effort to brush your aligners. If you’re unable to brush after eating, make sure you swish and swallow water before putting your aligner back in your mouth.

By following these guidelines, you are on the fast track toward a healthy and beautiful smile. Sometimes you can even beat our estimated end date by including VPro and Micro-Osteoperforation in your treatment plan. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us.

Sleep Apnea and Orthodontics

How We Can Help

Sleep apnea is a serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops for 10 seconds or more during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type of sleep apnea and is often caused by excess weight, narrow throats, allergies, smoking, alcohol abuse, and excess growth due to hormones. Sleep apnea can affect anyone at any age. Those who have sleep apnea may wake up in the middle of the night choking or gasping for air. When you experience pauses in breathing while you sleep, your brain registers the resulting elevated levels of carbon monoxide, which forces you to wake up. This leads to a disrupted and restless night of sleep, which can affect your alertness during the day. Many people who suffer from sleep apnea have to use a CPAP machine while they sleep. These machines are usually loud and can keep you and everyone else in the room awake at night. While this does help many people sleep through the night, it’s not an ideal solution for everyone. Oftentimes, physicians work alongside orthodontists to help their patients find solutions for their sleep apnea. They may recommend that a patient gets orthodontic treatment as structural changes to

the jaw can help open up passageways to make breathing easier. Another option is to use a

mouthguard. We can create a mouthguard designed for your mouth to help keep your airways open while you sleep and can even prevent snoring. These mouthguards can help you get a good night’s sleep without the use of a CPAP machine. Visit an orthodontist to get your mouthguard instead of getting an over-the-counter option. Why? Because using an over-the-counter mouthguard can mess up your bite, which can then cause future problems down the line. When you get a mouthguard from us, you are protecting your smile while helping your sleep apnea. If you’ve been struggling with obstructive sleep apnea and your CPAP machine is driving you crazy, talk to your physician about seeing an orthodontist to correct your sleep problems.

Get Out and Explore 3 VACATION DESTINATIONS SIMILAR TO MONTANA

Because of the popularity of the Kevin Costner miniseries “Yellowstone,” the state of Montana is seeing an economic boom, both in tourism and real estate, as people flock to explore the natural beauty of the state. But with Montana’s increasing popularity, traveling there may not be ideal, especially if you want to avoid crowds. Here are some other destinations that offer similar sights and activities! STANLEY, IDAHO If the mountains are calling your name, then Stanley, Idaho, is the place to go! About three hours northeast of Boise, this gem has three different mountain ranges: the Sawtooth, Lost River, and White Cloud. This trifecta is home to whitewater rafting, hiking, sightseeing, rock climbing, mountain biking, and exploring. While there’s tons to see and experience during the day, the beauty doesn’t stop at night. As Stanley is situated in the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, you’re able to see so

much more in the night sky, such as the Milky Way, meteors, and even planets!

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, WYOMING In Grand Teton National Park, you’ll find many sights and wildlife similar to those seen on screen in “Yellowstone.” The towering craggy peaks and luscious landscape do not disappoint, and sometimes there is no sign of human development for miles. It’s a truly remote and beautiful place to visit and explore. You are sure to encounter some amazing wildlife while hiking or camping — the park is home to more than 60 species of mammals and 300 species of birds. BIGHORN NATIONAL FOREST, WYOMING Specifically known for being remote, Bighorn National Forest is located in north-central Wyoming and offers over 192,000 acres of open wilderness and 1,200 miles of hiking trails to venture out on. The forest contains many

meadows and grasslands surrounded by large, dancing mountains and rolling hills.

The best part is that there are many different ways to explore Bighorn National Forest. Fishing, camping, mountain biking, rock climbing, camping, hunting, and horseback riding are just a few of the many ways to experience Wyoming’s beauty. Are you ready to get out and explore these different areas of our nation’s beauty? Check some of these great destinations off your bucket list!
