C an you believe that just two years ago, Madden Physical Therapy Dauphin opened its doors for the first time? I can’t. The past two years working and building the business in our Dauphin community have gone by very fast, and by our second anniversary in September, we will have grown from a staff of three to nine! We doubled our building size last year, too. It can be intimidating to open a new business in a community so established and close-knit as Dauphin, but we have been welcomed with open arms since day one. Thank you to everyone who has recommended us to their sibling, cousin, grandmother, and whoever else you’ve referred to us. Your support makes the work we do every day possible. In honor of this special anniversary and Labor Day this September, I want to use this space I commonly reserve for my own stories to share a few anecdotes about the team I have working with me at Madden Physical Therapy Dauphin. Every business book I’ve read or podcast I’ve listened to always highlights how business leaders are nothing without their people. They propel the work we do forward, and finding the best people to create a healing environment has been a big priority for me. I’m proud to say we’ve been able to do just that because of these great employees. Leslie: You may recognize Leslie as the person who answers your phone calls or who welcomes you when you come in for your appointment. Leslie has been with our parent company for five years and at Dauphin since we opened. She’s seen us through growth, and she’s been a big part of that. She is highly efficient, has the best handwriting in the world, and makes our patients feel comfortable seeking care. Danny: Joining me as the second physical therapist in the office, Danny is very skilled at what he does. (Although, that doesn’t stop us from teasing him endlessly.) He has an amazing ability to connect with his patients on a
personal level, and that connection, coupled with his knowledge base, makes him very successful at what he does.
Nate: With an athletic training background, Nate brings a unique perspective to his role as a physical therapy assistant, which can be very beneficial in times of high stress. He’s known for staying calm and collected. He has a way of making our patients feel calm. Jillian: If you have been to the office during the pandemic, you can thank Jillian for how safe and strict our guidelines are. Jillian serves as a physical therapy aide and is constantly hustling. She is task-oriented and knows how to get stuff done. That’s been invaluable during this pandemic. Britany: As my physical therapy assistant, Britany is an extremely hard worker. She’s always running from one task to the next, with not a dull moment in between. She always keeps us laughing! Patients love working with Britany, undoubtedly because of her humor and attention to their care. Carolina: The newest member of our team, Carolina joined Madden Physical Therapy Dauphin in late July, after joining us last year in an intern position. It’s only been a few weeks, but I can already see how valuable Carolina

Foods for a Faster Recovery
The Nutrients You Need During Physical Therapy Attending your physical therapy appointments and doing your at-home exercises as instructed by your PT are crucial parts of your recovery process. However, they’re not the only important steps you should take. What you eat can affect how quickly and well you heal just as much as your dedication to your exercises. By incorporating a few of these foods into your diet, you can heal faster and come back stronger than ever before.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids There are three phases to the healing process:
inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. While you might think that inflammation is a bad thing, it’s actually a normal and necessary part of healing. That said, you should still try to reduce inflammation, as it can be harmful in excess. Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids do wonders to control inflammation. Plus, our bodies can’t make omega-3 fatty acids naturally, so we have to get them from what we consume. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, olive oil, avocados, pecans, walnuts, and almonds. Antioxidant-Rich Fruits and Vegetables Along with omega-3 fatty acids, the antioxidants from fruits and vegetables can also go a long way in reducing inflammation. Broccoli contains vitamins A, C, and K, as
well as folic acid and several different minerals. ( Pro Tip : Cook your broccoli to maximize these nutrients!) Citrus fruits and peppers have high levels of vitamin C, and peppers have high levels of beta-carotene as well. Additionally, turmeric and garlic work wonders during the healing process. Protein-Rich Meats, Nuts, and Dairy Products When it comes to the proliferation and remodeling stages of healing, healthy sources of protein are the way to go. Lean meats like poultry and fish are easy sources of protein, but if you don’t eat meat, you can also get protein from beans, eggs, nuts, and dairy products. Protein-rich foods will help heal muscles and bones and prevent muscle atrophy. It’s incredible what the body can do with just a few intentionally consumed superfoods!

And Prevent Falls This Fall
O ur bodies tend to deceive us as we age. We may strain to hear the TV or struggle to read nutritional fact labels, but those are harmless in comparison to other effects of aging. As we age, our bodies show normal signs of wear and tear and we lose muscle and joint strength. Our inner ear function also diminishes. These two things combined make it more difficult for us to maintain our balance and catch ourselves when we fall. The result is that older adults have an increased risk of falling, and the aftermath can be deadly and costly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries and that one fall can increase your chances of falling again. As a result, falls cost the American public more than $50 billion each year. But while aging is common, falling doesn’t have to be. Here are three simple steps you can take to prevent it. 1. Exercise More: Studies correlate movement with better balance and strength. Just like your car needs to run every once in a while to function properly, your joints and muscles need to move on a regular basis to get stronger, stay healthy, and keep you upright.
2. Clean Your Home: We also run the risk of falling — regardless of how strong we are — when there’s stuff in our way. Keeping your walkways clear and removing junk from your home can be a simple way to limit the chances you will fall. Additionally, equipping your home with grab bars and proper lighting can limit this risk as you age, too. 3. Try Physical Therapy : Much like movement keeps your body strong, physical therapy uses movement to improve your balance. Your therapist can create a regimen that targets specific muscles or joints, and after you fall, working with a physical therapist can help you diminish your odds of falling again by treating injuries and improving balance. will be for our patients. She always has a big smile on her face and is willing to learn. She’s picked up her role very quickly, making the transition from Natalie, who is now attending physical therapy school, to Carolina very smooth. Callie: As our marketing representative, Callie is one of our newer faces around the office, but we already couldn’t imagine our operation without her. She’s stepped into her role with ease, and she’s helped us build into the community. Her dedication ensures we can spread our message to those who need it. I could keep rattling about how much I appreciate this team because without them we wouldn’t be in the position of continuing to grow that we are today. We’ve filled out our space and staffing, and my next goal is to continue improving our processes and training to ensure we are serving our patients to the best of our ability. If the past two years are any indication of how this might go, I’m confident that we will only continue growing. Thank you for your support in the past two years. Ingredients
• 2 garlic cloves, sliced • 1 tbsp fresh rosemary leaves • 1 tbsp dried oregano • 2 tbsp whole-grain mustard • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
• 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for grilling • 1 3-lb flank steak • Kosher salt, to taste • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
Directions
1. Combine garlic, rosemary, oregano, mustard, and vinegar in a blender. Purée until garlic is minced. 2. Add oil and continue blending until creamy, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Reserve 1/4 cup. 3. Place steak in a ceramic or glass baking dish and cover steak with the remaining marinade. Turn to coat the other side, cover, and let marinate in the fridge for at least 4 hours. 4. Remove steak from marinade and let excess marinade drip off. Sprinkle the steak lightly with salt and pepper. 5. Light grill and oil grates with olive oil. 6. Grill steak over moderate heat for 10–12 minutes, turning halfway through, until steak is lightly charred and the internal temperature reaches 125 F. 7. Let the steak rest for 5 minutes. Thinly slice, drizzle reserved sauce, and serve.

For Gardeners: Wildwood Park This Harrisburg park is perfect for gardeners and nature-lovers. It features a 90-acre lake, 6 miles of trails, and 1.5 miles of boardwalk trails for accessible walking. The park is also a hub of natural education. During COVID-19, the park’s education center and restrooms are closed, but the beautiful landscape around the center of the park remains open. For Sports Nuts: Wiconisco Creek If you’re looking for the best park for activities, you can’t go wrong at Wiconisco Creek. playground equipment, and more. Invite the family to the park and enjoy the many activities or one of the walking trails. For the History Buffs: Detweiler Park Sitting on 400 acres in Dauphin County, Detweiler Park comes with a long family history. It was once a farm shared by the Detweiler and Stackpole families, who cultivated the land and are responsible for all of the pine trees that line the trails of the park. In 1943, Mary Frances “Frankie” Stackpole married Meade D. Detweiler and became active in conservation. Thanks to the couple’s efforts, the land thrived and the health of the trees improved.
