As of November 2nd, 2020, Senior Housing Management, Inc. has officially rebranded. The “SHM” brand was strong, however, it is important in this rapidly changing environment to have a brand that is timeless and recognizable. I am excited to announce that we will now be known as Jaybird Senior Living (JSL). The first step took place on October 26th, with the renaming of our Facebook Page. The Jaybird Senior Living website made its debut on November 2nd, whose domain name is www.jaybirdSL.com. As the days and weeks go by, we will continue to make changes as we grow from a strong foundation to an even more promising future. It is important to note that despite changes to our company’s name and visual components, our core values

and mission remain steadfast in our dedication to the seniors we serve. Our teammembers continue to lead the senior living industry. “Jaybird” was my mother’s nickname. For me, the Jaybird brand is a reminder that we are taking care of someone’s mother or father. To be sure, it is a tremendous responsibility and a privilege, and it is surely one our entire organization takes seriously. The company’s namesake serves as a reminder of those values that my mother worked so hard to instill in me. First, good things come from hard work, modesty, and discipline. Second, integrity is the engine that drives all good outcomes. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we must treat everyone with respect. Respect is fundamental to our Red Carpet philosophy, which is inherent in all we do.

To some, a family consists of only blood relatives; those who share genetics, distinguishing features, and prominent traits. For Prairie Hills in Tipton, Iowa, family has less to do with a common ancestry and more to do with collective experiences, genuine compassion and a love for the simple things in life. Prairie Hills has been Amy McAtee’s home away from home since July of 2011. McAtee began her tenure at the community as a Resident Assistant, working her way up to Director in 2017. She’s not the only familiar face on the Coordinator team either. Shari Slaton, Community Relations Coordinator, has been with Prairie Hills since 2009 and actually trained McAtee when she was hired as a fellow caregiver on third shift. Charlene Daisy, Culinary Coordinator, began in 2008 as a Cook before a promotion to Culinary Coordinator. The same can be said about Andrea Williams, who began her employment with Prairie Hills as a Resident Assistant in 2017 before a promotion to Life Enrichment Coordinator.

A SPOTLIGHT ON RED CARPET SERVICE

“The majority of our team began as frontline staff. We’ve all worked very hard to get to the positions we’re in now and have a shared belief of what Prairie Hills should be for our employees and residents,” says McAtee. “We understand that no role is more or less important than another and support each other in times of celebration and struggle.” “We cannot say enough good things about the staff and the way [our mother] is cared for. Everyone treats her like family and they call her Grandma. They tell her they love her and, believe me, she loves all of them.” says the Webb Family. Crystal Jacobus, Memory Care Coordinator since 2016 plays a big role in this testimonial. She led the successful Memory Care expansion in 2018. The correlation between Prairie Hills and family ties continues through all ranks and residents and that begins and ends with their leader. “Amy has always led by example. She takes on any task with enthusiasm and energy,” Slaton shares. It’s not uncommon to hear stories of McAtee filling in on the weekend in the kitchen; preparing Mickey Mouse-shaped pancakes or covering an overnight shift for a Resident Assistant. “She is always the first to lend a hand or give support to our residents, their families or our team members.” The Prairie Hills family has much to show for their dedication as well. Neal Slaton, Maintenance Coordinator, was recognized by the Iowa Assisted Living Association, as the Hero of the Year in 2018 for his exemplary red carpet service to residents. The organization again recognized Prairie Hills in 2019, naming the site Property of the Year. Most recently, the Community was given the Jaybird Senior Living (formerly known as Senior Housing Management) Superior Customer Service Award in 2019 based on their prospective resident tour process.

“Working with Amy and her team for the last three years has been amazing. From the moment you walk in the door, you can tell Prairie Hills is a special place where people are treated like family members,” beams Lyla Erwin, Senior Portfolio Leader for Jaybird Senior Living. “The team is, above all, tremendously dedicated. They all want the very best for their residents and have high expectations that they hold each other accountable to achieve.” Erwin has acted as the Community’s Operations Manager since Jaybird Senior Living began managing the property in 2018. During that time, Prairie Hills achieved 100% occupancy and financial goals that had previously been unmet. Despite their many high accolades and frequent positive recognition, the group remains incredibly humbled by their achievements and feels the greatest sense of accomplishment in their day- to-day routines. They are most proud of the Community’s close ties to the City of Tipton and other philanthropic groups in Cedar County. “It’s so gratifying to

receive positive feedback from local organizations and be part of events that make a difference for our community members,” says Slaton. Much like typical families, the Prairie Hills family has had its fair share of highs and lows over the last fifteen years, but the goal has always stayed the same: Demonstrate exemplary red carpet service in all you do. We Still “Do!” Craig and Judy have been married for 58 years. While there are many couples that

have been together for this length of time, this couple’s relationship and love for each other thrives to this day despite the impacts of dementia. Melinda Shackelford, RN, Health Care Coordinator at Arlington Place of Red Oak, set out to make Craig and Judy’s dream anniversary come true. However, this anniversary would be unlike any you have heard of before. The pair are residents in Arlington Place’s Memory Care Gardens. Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s has taken much of Judy’s memory and, in her mind, she was still dating her sweetheart. Somewhat impatiently, Judy would ask, “Do you think he will ever ask me to marry him?” This became a daily conversation as she waited for Craig to pop the question. Over time, Melinda noticed Judy becoming more and more exasperated that Craig was dragging his feet. Craig was aware that their anniversary was approaching, so he and Melissa began discussing how they could make the event special for Judy. Together they devised a plan that would soon become a priceless experience for the couple and their loved ones. Melinda set up a private dining area in an empty apartment and decorated with fresh flowers, fine china, the glow of candles and romantic music to set the scene for one of the most incredible nights of Craig and Judy’s lives. Special care was taken by the Arlington Place team to ensure both Craig and Judy felt comfortable as they relived a moment in their shared history that meant so much to them. On that night, the couple celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary with a (re)engagement. The evening was complete with a champagne toast and an exuberant “Yes!” from Judy when Craig finally asked her to marry him. After 58 years, they still “do!”

COVID-19 has repeatedly shone a light on the many leaders within the Jaybird Senior Living portfolio who demonstrate exemplary red carpet service in all they do. One such leader is Carole Mietelski, Community Director for Milestone Senior Living in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Carole has dedicated herself to upholding the safety of her residents while providing unmatched health care. When a staff member is unable to work shift, it is not uncommon for her to stay on-site, exclaiming, “We’re all in this together!” Despite ever changing Coronavirus protocols, completing her administrator license classes, marketing the community, and picking up shifts as a caregiver, Carole has been a selfless example to her residents and staff. Her team describes her as a ‘tough cookie’ and the ‘calrm during the storm.’ Carole, thank you for your continued commitment to Milestone Senior Living!

On August 10th, a massive storm ripped through the Midwest causing widespread wind damage and destruction. One of the most impacted areas was Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which sustained 140 mph winds. Four Jaybird Senior Living properties are located in Linn County: Emery Place in Robbins and Corridor Crossing Place, Garnett Place and Prairie Hills in Cedar Rapids. Thankfully, no staff or residents were injured during the weather event, but buildings and grounds were impacted, requiring days of cleanup and repair. As a result of downed powerlines, many were without power for over a week. In response to the crisis, these properties offered immediate housing for seniors impacted by the derecho, or windstorm. Heartfelt thanks go out to the team members in these communities for maintaining safety with quick thinking, resident check-ins every 15 minutes, and generator procurement!

While visiting with Vivian and one of her long-time friends one day after Happy Hour, Arlington Place of Oelwein’s Life Enrichment Coordinator, Shenita, learned what a great golfer Vivian had been. The trio discussed the favorable weather and the need to get out for some putting practice. That’s when Shenita decided to bring the putting green to Vivian! While perfecting her short-game from the comfort of the Arlington Place hallways, Vivian was all smiles. As she lined up each putt, she would assess her stance, adjust her grip, and strategize her next swing. After each swing she would exclaim, “Yippie!” Vivian recalled many fond memories from golfing rounds past and was thrilled to have the opportuntiy to make new memories at Arlington Place. Way to go, Vivian! Thank you to Shenita and the Arlington Place team for coordinating this special moment for your resident!

Edencrest at Beaverdale became SingFit PRIME certified, offering residents in Memory Care this ‘music as medicine’ program.

Rockstar teammembers were recognized during the monthly virtual Director Meeting onWednesday, August 26th.

Jerry Bell, Community Director at Sunset Park Place in Dubuque, Iowa, celebrated his 16th work anniversary on September 24th.

The Lakeside Village was awarded a $96.8K Coronavirus Relief Fund Employer Innovation Fund Grant from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds.

Amy Lemke ‘returned home’ to the Northwoods where she now holds both the Rhinelander Director and JSL Portfolio Leader positions.

STANLEY Healthcare donated 37 boxes of hand sanitizer to our Communities on October 20th, totalling 222 gallons! Thank you!

Additionally, social isolation takes a toll on the emotional and physical health of older adults. According to Pew Research Center, in the United States, 27% of adults ages 60 and older live alone. The likelihood of living alone also increases with age. Among women age 75+, nearly half live alone, placing them at greater risk of the health consequences of social withdrawal and isolation. Not to mention that we’re not entering a stretch of months where seasonal depression impacts people of all ages. While video chatting and virtual events help bridge connections with those living alone, many older adults do not have the resources or means to engage in video technologies. Clinical professionals agree that loneliness is a health concern among older adults, particularly those that live alone. Senior living communities remain a safe and viable way to combat the isolation and loneliness that result from sheltering in place during the coronavirus pandemic.
