What We Accomplished in 2022 L a n r

Every year in business is interesting and exciting, full of setbacks and steps forward. This year has had its challenges like any other, but we’ve also made great strides toward Horizon Physical Therapy becoming the community health resource I’ve always wanted it to be. Most importantly, I wasn’t going it alone for the first time in 2022 — I had two other physical therapists by my side. Dr. Kendra Wade joined Horizon in March with 19 years as a physical therapist under her belt. She has proven to be a great asset to the practice. Dr. Patrice Gayle Harper came on board this summer. Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, she finished her doctorate in 2018 and has PT certification in lymphedema (a painful type of swelling in the arms or legs) and women’s health. Drs. Wade and Harper are the first-ever physical therapists to join me at Horizon, and their presence has been incredibly beneficial for our patients. Before, every patient had to see me — at least for their initial evaluation before they began working with physical therapy assistants. Having two additional therapists on staff has allowed us to accept new patients much sooner and decrease wait times dramatically. That means we’re treating more people in less time. toward Horizon Physical Therapy becoming the community health resource I’ve always wanted it to be.” “This year has had its challenges like any other, but we’ve also made great strides

Every physical therapist has unique skill sets, which allow us to broaden the types of treatment we offer. For example, Dr. Wade is passionate about Kinesio taping, a therapeutic practice that helps provide support and reduce pain and swelling. As a result, we’ve been doing significantly more of that in our office. Meanwhile, Dr. Harper is partial to manual therapy. Their skills complement mine and allow us to cover more bases and provide more treatment strategies. There have been other changes around the office. After some staff shuffles, we currently have one PT assistant. We also have a PT technician who has taken the board exam and will soon take on duties as a PT assistant. Since PT assistants can help implement components of patient care, their services are invaluable in treating as many people as possible. We’ve also been excited to make improvements to the facility. For the first time, we have a breakroom with a sink and countertop space. To accommodate additional staff, we’ve also furnished another office and created an area where everyone can store their belongings throughout the day. Coming up in the new year, we plan to make some aesthetic upgrades. Patients often tell us during treatment, “You need a picture in this room.” You’ll get your wish as we work to give the space a more appealing and homey feel. In 2023, I’m also considering adding additional treatments or machines to help our patients further. So, if you are interested in a specific type of therapy or service, contact us through our website, HorizonPhysicalTherapyFlint.com. We’ll consider your thoughts as we make decisions about our future. Here’s to the end of a great 2022 and the new challenges and opportunities 2023 will bring.

Boost Your Health While Helping the Environment Have You Heard of Plogging?

HEAD OUT IN GROUPS. Everything is more fun with others! Round up a group of friends, family, or coworkers and join the initiative together. If you’re up for it, you can even make it a contest! ADD IN DIFFERENT EXERCISES. Plogging doesn’t only have to incorporate jogging — while gathering trash; you can do squats, burpees, lunges, or even pushups. SWITCH UP ARMS. While plogging, holding the garbage bag in the same hand can become uncomfortable, especially as that bag gets heavier! Be sure to change which arm holds it from time to time! INCORPORATE SPRINTS. If jogging becomes too simple for you, try sprinting between trash to intensify the activity. Plogging is a great way to reduce pollution while getting in your workout! Local parks, neighborhoods, and common areas are a great place to start!

According to Our World in Data, the world manufactures more than 270 million tons of plastic annually. About 8 million tons of this plastic winds up in the ocean — that’s 3%! Plogging, a fad that originated in Sweden to help minimize pollution, is taking the world by storm. Essentially, you jog and pick up litter at the same time! Some cardio and a giant clean-up effort? It’s a great way to enjoy the cool winter temperatures while doing something good for the environment! Plogging can be done with others, at any time, and pretty much anywhere litter or trash exists. It’s a win-win! The origin of the word “plogging,” according to the Farmer’s Almanac, comes from a combination of jogging and the Swedish word for “pick up,” which is “plocka upp.” All you need is a pair of running shoes, a trash bag, stamina, some free time, and water to stay hydrated! If you’re interested in taking up the hobby or plogging every now and then to make a difference in our environment, here are some tips to keep the activity fun and interesting!

“Everybody is very helpful and friendly. I came in for lymphedema and swelling of my ankles and legs, and I can definitely tell that it has helped, because I used to have a lot of difficulty getting my shoes on, but now they slip right on.” –David H.

NEED A HIP REPLACEMENT?

TRY PT FIRST!

Doctors perform roughly 450,000 hip replacements annually in the U.S., but it still makes sense to avoid one if you can. Hip replacement surgery is painful and, like any surgery, comes with risks. While a hip replacement is sometimes the best way for someone to enjoy a fuller, less-painful life, most doctors recommend trying physical therapy before undergoing an invasive procedure. Most hip replacements result from osteoarthritis. As the cartilage in a person’s joints breaks down from the condition, the bones begin rubbing against each other, causing pain. Some people also need hip replacements due to a hip fracture or rheumatoid arthritis, and physical therapy generally won’t help in these cases. Fortunately, a physical therapist can sometimes treat osteoarthritis sufficiently to avoid surgery. Of course, prevention is the best medicine. People who maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly are less likely to develop osteoarthritis than those who don’t. Try to perform various activities to work as many muscle groups as possible. If you develop osteoarthritis, it’s also crucial to remain active with safe movement. That’s where physical therapy can help.

Physical therapy for osteoarthritis pain works by building up muscles to relieve pressure on your joints. When you can better support your body and absorb the shock of movements, your joints get relief. The process can take time, and physical therapy will most likely not eliminate pain for osteoarthritis sufferers, but many patients do see a significantly improved quality of life. Unfortunately, physical therapy will not work for everyone. Some patients also see improvement for several years but eventually stop experiencing relief. Physical therapy cannot prevent every hip replacement surgery, but it does play a pivotal role in a patient’s recovery. Anyone who undergoes hip replacement should seek postoperative physical therapy to enable the healing process. It’s the best way to strengthen your muscles, regain your range of motion, learn to use your new joint(s), and avoid further injury. If you’re experiencing hip pain or considering hip replacement surgery, ask your doctor whether physical therapy might work for you. And if surgery is a must, don’t forget the crucial role of physical therapy in your post-surgery recovery. We at Horizon Physical Therapy will work with your doctor to develop the best care plan possible and help you discover a new lease on life.

Best Christmas Tree Attractions to Visit This Holiday Season

TRAVEL-WORTHY CHRISTMAS TREES Lighting Up Life One Pine Needle at a Time

As the holiday season approaches, the twinkling lights and spectacular Christmas tree attractions are always a must-see! Here are the best travel destinations to catch a glimpse of one of the pillars of the holidays. THE ROCKEFELLER CENTER TREE IN NEW YORK CITY The Rockefeller Center tree is located just west of 5th Avenue from 47th through 51st streets in New York City and dates back to the Depression era, with the first tree placed there in 1931. This beloved tourist attraction draws thousands yearly with its dazzling lights and grand scale. To even be considered a contender for this role, a tree must be at least 65 feet tall and 35 feet wide!

President Calvin Coolidge was the first president to light the National Christmas Tree in 1923. The tree was 48 feet high and decorated with 2,500 red, white, and green electric bulbs. A local choir and a quartet from the U.S. Marine Band performed as the tree was lit. THE COEUR D’ALENE RESORT TREE IN IDAHO Also known as the World’s Tallest Living Christmas Tree, this grand fir holds the record at 162 feet tall. It is festively decorated with more than 40,000 lights that twinkle in time to the music of “Jingle Bells,” and the tree is crowned with a 10-foot-wide star! THE BILTMORE CHRISTMAS TREE IN NORTH CAROLINA This majestic 55-foot Norway spruce tree is in front of the Biltmore Estate and lit as guests make their way down the path of luminaries. With ornaments and miles of garland, this tree is selected for the Banquet Hall each year for guests from all over to see. Some are lucky enough to live near or in a city with a magnificent tree, but if you don’t, consider traveling to one of these locations to enjoy the holiday with your loved ones.

THE NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. This American favorite has long been a tradition. Every year, the ceremony begins with live performances by musical artists, and an annual highlight is when the president delivers a message of peace.
