King's Business - 1962-09

(continued from page 5) trying to be popular and instead had been true in declaring the judgments of God upon a sin-loving, prosperous, irresponsible generation of moral weaklings; if the clergy had not sold out their birthright for a mess of pot tage — then we hazard the opinion that the members of the Supreme Court would not have dared hand down such a decision. They would have known that our country would not sanction such disrespect and de nial of our God and Creator and the Bible upon which the nation was founded. Fifty years ago impeachment would have been demanded. Where are the Daniel Websters of this day? One recalls his statement that the most profound thought that had ever come into his mind was “ our accoun tability to God!” Popular liberal preaching today makes the authority of the Word of God meaningless. So much emphasis has been placed upon the love of God, that His holiness and His righteous demands upon man have been lost sight of. There is almost no mention of sin in the vast majority of sermons. If its existence is admitted, it is pre sented as something about which we need have little concern. We are sick and our psychiatrists can make us well! With such an emasculated Gos pel in the pulpit, it is small wonder that there are such rulings in the courts and that these Supreme Court justices should think so lightly of God as to rule Him out. If the churches do not consider Him One to be ser iously reckoned with in everyday life, why should prayer be offered to Him in the schoolrooms? It is an encouraging sign that this Supreme Court decision is not accep table at the grass roots level of our land. It is heartening that great men like two ex-Presidents Dwight Eisen hower and Herbert Hoover have pro tested against it. But, alas, the Chris tian public soon becomes weary in well-doing and ceases to carry on a continuous aggressive battle for the right. Our liberty and heritage will be lost, not by the inroads of alien ideologies, but because we Christians so quickly lay down our arms and ac commodate ourselves to the trends of the times. “We must fight if we would win; increase our courage, Lord!” Yes, we have the first reaping of the whirlwind in this nefarious de cision of our highest Court. We trem ble at what the full harvest will be if this trend is not reversed!
