B.E. Smith - Women's Services Project Whitepaper

Women’s Health Nursing Nursing roles within women’s services include labor and delivery nurses, postpartum care professionals, and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners (WHNPs). These nurses provide essential care to women across various life stages, from childbirth to managing chronic conditions. Leadership opportunities in this avenue often include roles such as Nurse Manager or Director of Women’s Services, positions that help steer vision and strategy within the field. Other Specialty Careers Beyond traditional roles, specialty areas like reproductive endocrinology, maternal-fetal medicine, and women’s health physical therapy allow professionals to focus on specific, impactful niches. For instance, reproductive endocrinologists, who specialize in fertility treatments, are in high demand as more women seek assistance with family planning. Similarly, women’s health physical therapists help address issues such as pelvic floor dysfunction, creating avenues for specialized care that greatly impacts quality of life.

Overcoming Challenges in Women’s Services Careers While careers in women’s services are rewarding, they also come with unique challenges. Gender bias, emotional demands, and striking a work-life balance are frequently-cited concerns cited in AMN Healthcare’s 2024 Healthcare Leadership Trends report. However, each of these challenges also presents an opportunity to lean into leadership and mentorship roles to drive meaningful change. Women in leadership positions within healthcare have a significant opportunity to reshape organizational cultures, implement supportive practices, and advocate for gender equity. By addressing systemic challenges, women’s services leaders can create an empowering and inclusive environment for the next generation of healthcare professionals.
