Points and Problems 1. "Thou hast gained thy brother" (Matt 18:15). These words suggest the purpose of pointing out to a sinning brother his wrongdoing. It is not in order to condemn him. It is not that he may be the object of scorn and rebuke. It is that he may be “gained” or restored. Too often this part of the instruction is overlooked. The soul is of such value that when one member Of the body of Christ sins, the Lord wants those who are spiritual to do all that is possible to bring him back into fellowship. The word “gained” as used here is an expression common in the market place. It suggests that a brother won back from sin and dis harmony with God’s- people is of great value to the one sinned against and to the entire Church. 2. "Let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican" (Matt. 18:17). The responsibility of the church is very clear with respect to the man who spurns all attempts to win him back into fellowship. Discipline must be exercised. Sin must not be con doned by God’s people. But this does not mean that the man so disciplined is a hopeless outcast. Christ came to seek and to save the heathen man and the publican (Matt. 21:31,32; Luke 19:10). Such a man must be recog nized as an object of God’s saving grace, and more soul-winning effort than ever should be made on his be half. 3. "Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left" (Mark 10:37). One may talk glibly about the merit of these young men in desiring to be near Jesus in His coming glory. The fact of the matter is that there was a great deal of self-centered interest in their request. That is plainly evident from the attitude of the ten in verse forty- one. Selfish desire is a subtle thing; it brought about Satan’s fall (Isa. 14:13,14). It often asserts itself in the hearts of followers of the Lord Jesus. Remember the guilty ones on this occasion were not those who “walked afar off,” but were members of the inner circle. For the Children L earning to L ive T ogether (M ark 10:35-37, 41-45) MEMORY VERSE: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Mark 12:31). Last week we discovered that James and John had not learned from the Lord Jesus Christ to love their ene mies and to be kind to those who wronged them. One day these two brothers came to the Saviour and said, “Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. And he

said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the- other on thy left hand, In thy glory.” Jesus had told His disciples that He was King. They thought that He would set up His kingdom upon earth and have them rule with Him. When the other ten disciples heard what James and John had asked Jesus, they became angry. Jesus called them to Himself and told them that, while in worldly kingdoms the leaders try to show their own power and greatness, this was not to be true in His king dom. Among His followers, whoever was humble would be the greatest. He told them that even He came not to be waited upon, but to serve others, and to give His life for many people. Those in kingdoms of this earth try to get all that they can; those in Christ’s kingdom try to give to others all that they can. Thé Lord Jesus was grieved that among His disciples whom. He expect ed to love each other, there should be- jealousy and quarreling. He had tried to teach them to love one another even as He loved them. They had not yet learned this Important lesson. They were not treating one another as they would want to be treated. It was only, after the Saviour died upon the Cross and arose again, that they began to love each other and even their ene mies in a way that pleased Jésus. Last week we learned from God’s Word that we should love one an other (1 John 4:7). This week we learn how much we are to love others: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Mark 12:31).
