Objects: An electric extension cord connected to a wall outlet, an electric bulb and a dictionary. Lesson: There are three ways of learning about electricity. The first to which I want to call your attention is by reading, or taking the word of someone who knows. In Webster’s dic tionary I read a definition of elec tricity, “An imponderable and invisi ble force of nature, used by man to produce light, heat and power.” You can learn much about electricity by ' reading, if you believe what you read. The second way of learning about electricity is to see what it does. I screw the bulb into the socket, press the button, and we have light. If you believe all you see regarding elec tricity, you will learn much. If I should be foolish enough to re move the bulb and stick my finger into the socket, I would learn about electricity in a still different way—by receiving a shock. The circumstances could be such that the shock could kill me. By putting my finger in the socket, I would learn something about electricity, but I might be dead as a result. These three ways of teaching are referred to in the Bible. In Luke 12:20 we read: “But God said unto him,Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be re quired of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou has provided?” It took the shock of death for the rich fool to learn that he should love God more than his possessions, and then it was too late for him to be saved. Another way of learning is men tioned in Luke 19. Zacchaeus had climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Jesus. When Jesus called for him to come down, verse 6 tells us, “And he made haste, and came down, and received him [Jesus] joyfully.” Zacch aeus was wise in that he did not wait to be shocked by death, but believed when he saw and heard. Jesus, in speaking to Thomas, re ferred to the other way of learning, “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed” (John 20:29). Wise boys and girls today will believe the truths from God’s Word when they read them and hear them taught.

Objects: A flat-sided bottle, such as is used for shaving lotion, a small bottle filled with a solution of sodium hyposulphite and a bottle of iodine. (Cut the outline of a heart from paper and glue it on the side of the flat bottle. Put enough water in this bottle to cover the heart. Cut a cross from red paper and glue it on thé side of the bottle containing sodium hyposul- phite. This drug may be secured at any drug store.) Lesson: This bottle [the flat-sided one] reminds me of Thomas. As long as Christ was living, he was happy. The death of Christ changed Thomas, just as this bottle is changed by this dark-colored poison. (Pour in some of the iodine.) Thomas was different from the other disciples, in that he refused to believe in the resurrection and be comforted. When told of the resurrection of Christ, he said, “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe” (John 20:25). His heart was filled with doubts, just as this bottle is filled with poison. He continued in this doubting condi tion for a whole week. What a sad week it must have been for him! The others had been comforted by having seen the risen Lord. It was a glad day, indeed, when Jesus again appeared unto the dis ciples, Thomas being present, and said, “Peace be unto you.” Watch this bottle as I pour into it from the bottle on which there is a cross. The dark color is gone, and the bottle is clear again. This is what happened to Thomas’ doubts. When he saw the risen Christ, all doubts were gone forever. He said to Christ, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). It is surprising how Christ is a cure for all doubts. Whenever anyone comes to Him with doubts, He imme diately causes the doubts to disap pear. Some people feel it is a sign of great learning when they doubt the truth fulness of the Word of God. They are proud of their doubting. But none of them are happy doing this, any more than Thomas was happy while there was doubt in his heart concerning Christ. Trust in the Lord Jesus brings joy.
