MULTI-CLUB OPERATORS ■ The multi-club sector has seen a 2.4% drop in the number of clubs with a pool, down from 907 clubs in 2023 to 885 in 2024. ■ The total number of pools has also fallen across this market segment, from 1,159 in 2023 to 1,128 in 2024 (-2.7%). ■ The average membership fee across the 885 clubs has increased by 8.4% – up from £75.52 in 2023 to £81.86 in 2024.
INDEPENDENTS ■ The independent sector has seen a 1% drop in the number of clubs with a pool, down from 402 clubs in 2023 to 398 in 2024. ■ The total number of pools has also fallen slightly across this market segment, from 489 in 2023 to 485 in 2024 (-0.8%). ■ The average membership fee across the 398 clubs has only increased by 0.9% – up from £71.76 in 2023 to £72.40 in 2024.
Between them, the top 10 private sector pool operators opened just two brand new clubs with a pool in the 12 months to the end of March 2024.
■ Village Gym, YouFit, LivingWell and Total Fitness (see page 106) operate the same number of clubs with pool(s) as in 2023. ■ Sports Direct Fitness has seen the biggest decrease of any of the top 10 operators: in 2024, it has eight fewer clubs with pools than in 2023. ■ Nuffield Health (see page 90), Bannatyne and Virgin Active also have fewer clubs with pools than in 2023 (-2, -1 and -2 respectively).
■ Second-placed David Lloyd Clubs opened both of these new facilities, both in August 2023: one in Edinburgh and one in Rugby. ■ David Lloyd Clubs has a net gain of +1 club with pool, having ceased operation of its Maidstone club on 31 May 2023. The club is now run by Maidstone Leisure Trust. ■ Spindles Health & Leisure is the only other top 10 operator to operate more clubs in 2024 than in 2023 (existing hotel health clubs that are now branded Spindles).
