50.2% of all public centres with a pool are managed by a trust – a similar proportion as in 2023 (50.6%).

Meanwhile, 22.6% of the UK’s public centres with pools are under in-house local authority management (+0.8%), 11.2% are managed by a leisure management contractor (LMC, -0.1%) and just 7.5% are managed by an educational establishment (-0.2%). Could this be set to change in the coming years? We’re already seeing more councils insource leisure, while Places Leisure is asking itself questions such as: “Is management contracting the only model moving forward?” as it considers building pools and centres itself (see interview, page 62.) It will certainly be interesting to see what the future holds for public sector pool management.
