Looking for a special holiday in 2026? RT’s travel editor Ed Grenby has some ideas for trips to remember
S ome holidays are merely… nice; others you remember for the rest of your life. And with a whole new year opening up before you like a fresh wide horizon, this is the perfect time to think about a proper trip.
Some of our picks are soft and soothing, others a tiny bit beefier – but all are unforgettable. So don’t just add to your bucket list; start working your way through it. And let 2026 be the year you make some ticks on it!
It’s time to think big – not necessarily in difficulty or distance, but in ambition. These are the trips you’ll talk about for years: the coastlines that make you gasp; the train rides that slow time; the deserts and fjords that feel like another planet.
Discover Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ extraordinary cruises around the British Isles, designed to showcase the region’s breathtaking landscapes and fascinating heritage. Cruises will take you to locations such as the mystical Isle of Skye, the legendary Giant’s Causeway and the Neolithic wonder of Skara Brae. Experience cosmopolitan Belfast, uncover Cornwall’s mythical Tintagel, and marvel at the lochs of the Scottish Highlands. Onboard, enjoy the comfort of our small ship fleet, including Balmoral and Borealis , offering spacious cabins, private balconies and exceptional dining. CRUISE THE BRITISH ISLES IN STYLE From £649pp
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE See leopards in the Kruger
but all offering that fuss-free “unpack once” simplicity. Go between May and September for long days; choose October to March sailings if you want a chance at the Northern Lights. Shore excursions include RIB safaris, glacier walks and scenic railways, but you can also just sit on deck with a hot chocolate and watch the show. SAFARI SOUTH AFRICA n WHY Because Kruger National Park and its neighbouring private reserves are the safari dream exactly as you imagined it: lions at dawn, elephants at waterholes, leopards in trees — all viewed from open 4x4 vehicles with expert trackers (and G&Ts at dusk!). n HOW Fly into Johannesburg and transfer to Kruger or nearby private reserves such as Sabi Sands or Timbavati. Private lodges offer twice-daily game drives, gorgeous suites and all-inclusive meals. A three- or four-night stay is perfect, perhaps combined with Cape Town or a laid-back road trip along the Garden Route afterwards. Winter (May to October) offers thinner vegetation and easier wildlife viewing; summer brings lush landscapes and baby animals. Malaria precautions apply in some areas, and you’ll want to book well ahead for peak months, as the top lodges fill quickly. NEW ENGLAND IN AUTUMN n WHY Because nothing beats the fall colour — scarlet maples, gold birch forests and white-steepled towns like you’ve seen on the screensavers. It’s autumn magic, and it’s right there roadside. n HOW Fly to Boston, hire a car and follow a loop through Vermont, New Hampshire and coastal Maine. Stays in inns and converted farmhouses add charm; routes like the Kancamagus Highway guarantee leaf-peeping glory. Book well ahead, but don’t fret over the timing: if you range north to south, you’ll catch the colours somewhere (plus pumpkin patches, lobster shacks, covered bridges and small-town museums). A week is fine, though ten days lets you breathe . And for a no-drive option, escorted tours are plentiful.
Amalfi coast
ITALY’S AMALFI COAST n WHY Because it’s Europe’s most glamorous, movie-star coastline, but entirely accessible if you pick the right base. Lemon groves, pastel towns and sparkly Tyrrhenian horizons never get old. n HOW Avoid peak-season Amalfi and Positano by staying in Ravello, Minori or Praiano — quieter, better value and with the same views. Hop on ferries instead of buses to dodge traffic and reach Capri, Sorrento or Salerno. A week works well: mix boat trips, cliff-side walks and long lunches with mozzarella that tastes like sunshine. May to June and September to October give the best balance of weather and space. (In summer, you’ll need to pre-book restaurants and beach-club spots.) CRUISING THE

NORWEGIAN FJORDS n WHY This is “soft adventure” at its most spectacular, as you ogle glacier-cut waterways, chocolate-box harbours and cliffs that lean in so close you feel you could touch them. It’s nature made nice and easy — sail on in with no need to drive, fly or faff around with luggage. n HOW Most fjord cruises sail from Bergen or the UK, with itineraries dipping into Geirangerfjord, Stavanger or Alesund. Ships range from big, bells-and-whistles vessels to small, expedition-style cruisers,

ICE WORLD Iceland’s Skaftafell glacier
Sorrento
ICELAND’S BEAUTIFUL SOUTH n WHY Because it’s a highlight reel of Iceland in miniature: thundering waterfalls, steamy springs, black beaches and volcanic drama — yet reachable on relaxed day tours. n HOW Base yourself in Reykjavík or along the coast, and join guided excursions to Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara and the glaciers around Skaftafell. (Accommodation ranges from sleek boutique hotels to cosy wooden cabins, much improved from a decade ago.) Add the Golden Circle for geysers, saga history and crazy tectonics, or the Blue Lagoon for a steamy finale — it’s now open again after volcanic eruptions dramatically closed it in 2023 and 2024. Winter brings Northern Lights and ice caves; summer brings near-24-hour daylight. Both are sensational. THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS n WHY Because it’s one of Britain’s last great wild places. Vast lochs, brooding mountains, sea-lashed isles and single-track roads that lead to utter silence — it’s as imagination-stirring as anywhere on the planet, and it’s right on your doorstep. n HOW Base yourself in Inverness, Fort William or Aviemore, then explore by hire car, local tours or ferries to Skye, Mull or the Outer Hebrides. Classic routes include Glencoe, the Road to the Isles and the NC500 (best tackled in quieter months). Walkers can take on Ben Nevis or gentler glens; gourmands can follow whisky trails through Speyside. Even a short break feels restorative. Aim for April to June or September to October for good weather, fewer crowds — and fewer midges. WIDESCREEN JORDAN n WHY Because few destinations offer such concentrated wonder: ancient cities carved in rose rock; lunar-like deserts; floating uncannily in the Dead Sea. Jordan offers a lot of awesome packed into a small (and safe!) area. n HOW Start in the capital, Amman, for Roman ruins and falafel feasts, then head south to Petra for at

DOWN THE DOURO n WHY Because it’s the world’s most relaxed wine-tasting tour — with terraced vineyards drifting by, pretty quintas perched above the river, and port poured generously in golden evening light. n HOW Douro cruises usually start in Porto and wind east to Peso da Régua, Pinhão and the Spanish border. Cabins are hotel-standard, the pace is slow and the scenery does most of the talking. Expect vineyard visits, tiled palaces, olive-oil farms and some splendid lunches. Seven nights is the norm; visit from May to October, with September offering the romance of harvest season. As with all river cruises, everything can be included, making it a simple holiday for couples, solo travellers or multi-gen groups.
n HOW Fly into Christchurch or Queenstown, then loop south via Fiordland (for Milford or Doubtful Sound) and north through Wanaka and the West Coast glaciers. Self- drive is straightforward, with light traffic and plenty of well-located motels and lodges. Add wine tastings in Central Otago and a night in Mount Cook Village for star-filled skies. Aim for a two-week trip to avoid rushing — spring and autumn offer crisp days and fewer crowds. Tour companies can handle the logistics if you’d rather just admire the scenery.
NEW ZEALAND’S SOUTH ISLAND n WHY Because it’s the ultimate “effortless-epic” adventure: cinematic mountains, turquoise lakes, slow roads. It looks like Middle-earth but feels
JAPAN’S ‘GOLDEN ROUTE’ n WHY Because the classic Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima trip serves Japan’s greatest hits on one elegant, efficient journey: neon, temples, bullet trains and deep, moving history. n HOW Follow the classic triangle — three nights in Tokyo, three in Kyoto and one or two in Hiroshima. The shinkansen bullet train links them seamlessly, and English signage makes navigation a doddle. Spring and autumn are the dream seasons for blossom or blazing leaves, but are pricier. Outside those times, Japan can be surprisingly affordable: mid- range hotels are excellent, and the Japan Rail Pass offers good value depending on your route.

CANADIAN ROCKIES BY RAIL n WHY Because it’s mountain majesty made utterly indolent: all glass domes, silver service and enormous landscapes rolling past while you sit comfortably with a coffee. Pure “treat yourself” territory. n HOW The classic route is Vancouver to Banff or Jasper on the Rocky Mountaineer (daytime only, so you don’t miss a view). Through widescreen windows, watch rivers, canyons, forests and peaks unspool themselves as you trundle past, with nights in hotels along the way.
