mendable qualities of leadership. This is how it should be. False lead­ ers could easily be scrutinized in the light of Deuteronomy 18:9. In Saul's case, here in I Samuel 28, he saw the enemy instead of the Lord. The fruitless leader's mind was shaken and he could not cope with what the problems might be. For many years he had been trav­ elling the path of self-will, living only for himself. Saul is a perfect illustration of a believer living in a backslidden condition, away from the Lord. He had no peace whatso­ ever. No one is more miserable than a person out of fellowship with the Lord. Life is punctuated by worry, anxiety, frustration and the inability to cope with life's problems. King Saul had long lost sight of his Lord. How about you? Are your eyes upon your problems or upon your Saviour? Do you remember Peter? When he got out of the boat to walk to Jesus he unfortun­ ately took his eyes off the Lord. Looking at the turbulent sea, he began to sink. That is so true to­ day, too. Many Christians are sink-

SAUL’S DESPERATE SITUATION We are being confronted today with an unprecedented interest and involvement in the occult. Black arts, witchcraft, seances, nec­ romancy, and spiritism of all types pervades the minds of both edu­ cated and uneducated. Satan wor­ ship is on the increase. What are we to believe as followers of Jesus Christ? In Leviticus 20:6 we read, "And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits and after wizards, to play the harlot af­ ter them, I will even set my face against that soul and will cut him off from among his people." The 27th verse indicates that such in­ volvement was a capitol offense in Israel. Richard Halverson has said that difficulties make some men and ruin others. In the case of King Saul his difficulties destroyed him. Just after Samuel, the great man of Cod, had died, the wayward king had no one to whom he could turn for guidance and direction.
