THE INFALLIBLE WORD AND THE UNDERSTANDING LORD

One of the most important things you can do is memorize God's Word (Psalms 119:9-11). Do you regularly hide Scripture in your heart? Spiritual growth can come only in this way. It calls for medi tation which memorization makes possible. "Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against Thee." As a student in seminary my father gave me a Bible. In the front was a statement that declared, "This Book will keep you from sin, and sin will keep you from this Book." How true that observation! Today, perhaps as never before, we must saturate ourselves with the Word of God. There is no way God can empower us for His glory if we are not emersing ourselves in His blessed Word. You should have a certain time every day set aside for this important purpose. God wants to feed you for your own spiritual stature. If you are a businessman, perhaps you could memorize while on your way driv ing to work. As a housewife, after the children are off to school, there is time for an extra cup of coffee and 15 minutes memorizing the Word. Try a sentence or a phrase

One of the most needed attri butes for Christian character today is purity (Ephesians 5:3; I Peter 2:11; Matthew 5:8). David of old knew the danger of spiritual im purity. He testified, "Therefore, if I regard iniquity in my heart the Lord will not hear me" (Psalms 66:18). We can be thankful for the cleansing which is promised to those who confess their sins to the Lord (I John 1:9; Psalms 32:5). Ecology is much in the news to day with urgings on every hand to "clean up the environment." If we are going to grow in Christ-like- ness, seeking to be effective instru ments in the Lord's hands, then, we must be pure. We must be gripped and possessed by practi cal, experiential holiness. All of us have problems as we are living in a society that is continually and completely saturated with sex. No one needs to point out the poison of pornography. Apart from the Holy Spirit's power there is only tremendous weakness from our hu man nature. As we take Cod's Word seriously, however, we can maintain purity in our daily lives. Page 34
