Hoover Angus - 97th Annual Angus Bull & Female Sale [2/4/25]

Recommendations for cows or heifers:

In this catalog, I note on every bull whether he is suitable for use on virgin heifers, or if he is safest to use on cows. Here are the criteria I use to make this determination: BW EPD, CED EPD, individual birth weight, dam’s birth weight ratios, sire’s calving ease favorability, and the phenotype of the bull. The phenotype generally includes the shape of the bull’s head (is it long and narrow or short and blocky?), the shoulder, and the amount of bone. A bull’s BW and CED EPD are impacted by his own birth weight and calving ease score (calving ease score ONLY if he is out of a first calf heifer), pedigree information, and genomics. Genomics play an extremely large role in an animal’s EPDs. I try to be reasonably conservative when I recommend bulls for use on heifers, as I do not want customers to pull calves! With that being said, I do expect heifers to be managed and developed reasonably well. For example, any outlier small or young heifers being removed from the group. For those with heifers of unknown background, I would strive to select a bull in the best 30% of the breed or better for BW EPD and the best 30% of the breed or better for CED EPD. Also, users of club calf genetics need to use caution when selecting bulls for first calf heifers, as these genetics are often associated with more calving problems. Remember, the bull is only half of the genetic equation in calving ease. He provides none of the environmental calving aspects, such as the nutrition of the dam during gestation. After a cow has had her first calf, the rate of dystocia (calving difficulty) is extremely low, assuming no abnormal presentations such as backwards calves. Therefore, all bulls in this catalog can be used safely on mature cows. Remember, Angus is already a “calving ease” breed, and I encourage you to stay away from extreme calving ease bulls for use on mature cows, as they generally give up performance. If you have further questions, just give me a shout, Landi

+ Retaining 1/3 revenue sharing semen interest. + B487 is a long, attractive-profiling bull with a little more frame. He’s a slick-haired, proud bull recommended for use on heifers or cows. + B487 was the #1 weaning weight, #2 yearling weight bull of his crop (non-ET)! He also ties with the 2 nd highest YW EPD in the fall bulls! + B487 has excellent muscle, as told by his Ribeye EPD that tops the fall bull division! + Dam Z307 was an excellent uddered first calf heifer with B487 and is raising her second calf now. + Grandam P59, a Pathfinder, is still going strong and will turn 10 years old by sale day. She has a perfect 365 day calving interval! Fertility and longevity are the two most important traits in a cattlemen’s herd (or should I say lack of those two things are big expenses)! + P59’s progeny work for Jeff Anderson, Randy Euken, Steve Myers and David Bock. Her only two daughters both work in the herd. + Pathfinder great grandam F520 was a superior cow! Several of her calves were among the top weaning weight calves of their crop; three were photo features. Her 6 sons averaged an excellent $7750! + F520 traces back to the L913 cow who has 13 Pathfinder descendants that have stemmed from her, as well as a total of 50 cows that have served in the Hoover herd! What a great cow family this has been through the generations! Featured bulls 89- 90 also trace back to L913. + Nine Pathfinders are found in this pedigree, indicating excellent cow power!
