art paper. (Fill the jar half full of water discolored with ink. Finish filling the jar with clear gasoline. Cover the jar with the art paper.) L essotl: Isn’t this a beautiful-looking jar? You know what the outside looks like. Can you guess what is on the inside? You'd think it should be something very nice to match the fine-appearing outside. Let’s see what is inside by pouring it into this glass. It is clear as a crystal. (Glue a narrow band of paper around the bottom of the glass to conceal any of the ink which might come out.) This clear fluid coming out of this jar’s mouth reminds me of the words which came out of Peter’s mouth, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt. 16:16). Christ gave His approval of Peter’s words by answering, "Blessed art thou, Simon.” Soon after this we find that Christ had to rebuke Peter, saying: “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offense unto me.” Christ had been telling His disciples that He was soon to be crucified, and then Peter had said, "Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee” (Matt. 16:22). Peter, who had said the right thing at first, was saying the wrong thing now. W e will again pour out of this jar into the other glass. It is black! Out of the same jar has come that which is clean and un clean. Peter needed to have his heart changed, in order that the mouth would always give forth that which was clean and pure. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faith less and perverse generation, how long shall 1 be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he de parted out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. L esson Text: Matt. 17:1-9, 14-18. G olden Text: “W e beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Fa ther" (John 1:14). D evotion al R eading: Rev. 1:12-18. Outline and Exposition I. S eeing the G lory (Matt. 17:1-4) T HREE disciples—Peter, James, and John—were taken by the Lord to the mountain on which He was to be transfigured. Possibly the reason these three were chosen lay in the fact that they entered more fully into the program of o«r Lord than did the others, and hence could be given greater revelations than could be given the others. He “was transfigured before them” (v. 2). It is our belief that the glory which was manifested was the amazing beauty of His own soul as a man, the glory of perfect humanity, a foregleam of the glory that awaits all believers; the “only begotten,” that is, Deity could not be transfigured. The word "transfigured” comes from the same root as "transformed” (Rom. 12:2) and "conformed" (Rom. 8:29).

say ye that I am?” It was then that Peter answered, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” How happy Jesus was to know that Peter understood! He knew that Peter could be trusted to do great things for Him. The day was coming when Peter would be the one who would preach to thousands and tell them the story of eternal life. Now because Peter knew that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, it was hard for him to believe that Jesus was soon to die. The disciples hoped that there would be another way for God to save the world. But this was God’s plan, and no other way would do. And when Peter suggested that Jesus need not die, Jesus rebuked him. Jesus had to die for our sins. That was the thing that Jesus had to make plain to His disci ples. It is the thing that we must under stand, too. JANUARY 15, 1939 PETER SEES CHRIST’S GLORY M atthew 17:1-18; 2 P eter 1:16-18

Matthew 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart, 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. 4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. 6 And when the disciples heard it,. they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. 7 And Jesus came. and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. 8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. 9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. 14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son; for he is a lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
