from heaven: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” God, Himself, was telling them that this was His Son, the promised Saviour. Peter wanted to stay right there on the mountain and be with Jesus and Moses and Elijah forever. But he had to go down the mountain, for Moses and Elijah disappeared and Jesus looked the same as always. And Jesus wanted to go down to help the people in the valley.

It is an Eastern story—whether fact it matters not—-which tells of a dying ruler who sent a message to his people announc ing that his son would succeed him on the throne and asking on his behalf their loyal allegiance. . . . The people found that the rule of the new king was beneficent and gracious. All marveled at his knowledge of their condition and needs and wondered how it was that he understood them so well. . . . They went one day to the palace gate and said: "Let the king suffer us to see his face.” When the king came forth, the people cried joyfully: “W e know thy face!” While a prince, he had moved, in cognito, among them. . . . He had shown such love and kindness to all that he had won their hearts. Now, when they saw him in the palace, his kingly robes did not dis guise him. The Eastern story feebly illustrates a world-wide fact. In the incarnation, our King came to the palace gate and let men look upon His face. —P earls fo r P reachers. One Beautiful Day M atthew 17:1-18; 2 P eter 1:16-18 M em ory V erse: "We beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father” (John 1:14). A pproach: You remember in our story last week that Peter showed he understood that Jesus was Christ, the Son of God. But L esson S to ry: One day Jesus took Peter and James and John up into a high moun tain: and there, suddenly, Jesus looked very different. His face shone and His clothes glistened as a white light. Beside Him stood on one side Moses, who had brought the children of Israel the Ten Command ments, commandments that showed them that they could not do the right things without God’s help. On the other side ap peared Elijah, the prophet. This was God’s way of showing Peter and James and John that Jesus was indeed the Promised One. And as they stood there, a voice spoke Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he m ay sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. 33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, ana to death. 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. 54 Then took they him, and led him , and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off. 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the Peter found it hard to understand that though Jesus was the all-powerful Son of God, yet He must suffer and die for people’s sins. T h e Bible tells us what happened six days later, something that Peter would always remember.

O b jects: A pair of scissors, a needle, two six-volt dry-cell batteries or a six-volt trans former, a piece of adhesive tape, about sixty feet of Number 20 cotton-covered ar mature wire, and a cardboard tube three inches long by three-quarters of an inch in diameter. (Wind the wire around the card board tube, closely together, back and forth in layers from one end to the other, until all the wire is used. Connect the ends of the wire to the batteries. Metal placed on the inside of the coil will become magnetized. Wrap the coil with adhesive tape.) L esson: When do you use scissors—-in the light or in the dark? "When it’s light, of course.” Yes, those who use scissors need good light. Did you know that scissors can be made to find lost needles even in the dark if they are magnetized? This is done by placing the blades in a coil, such as this, and turning on the current. I will place this needle on the table,- shut my eyes, and see whether the scissors will find it for me. You tell me when it has been found. Yes, it did not take long for the scissors to find the needle. In looking at these scissors, I am re minded of the transfiguration of Jesus Christ. The power of God was manifested in Christ. Peter wanted to stay there, but Christ knew of the dark valley of need at the foot of the mountain, and He went down so that the suffering child could re ceive God’s power. We, too, should go from the mountain! of blessing to serve in the valleys of need. midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the^ fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and saia, This man was also with him. 57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. 58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. 59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him; for ne is a Galilean. 60 And Peter said, Man, 1 know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
