1. Unification of the kingdom (2 Sam. 5). 2. Restoration of the ark of the Lord (2 Sam. 6). 3. The promise of an everlasting kingdom (2 Sam. 7:4-29). 4. David’s great sin and his repen tance (2 Sam. 11:1 to 12:23). 5. Strife in David’s household and among his servants (2 Sam. 13 to 20). 6. David establishes Solomon as the next king (1 Ki. 1 to 2:9). 7. David's death (1 Ki, 2:10, 11). II. D avid the M usician David was first introduced to Saul as a minstrel: as a deviser of musical instru ments he is named in Amos 6:5. The la ment over Saul and Jonathan (2 Sam. 1:17- 27) reveals to us David’s poetic power; David was the father of Hebrew psalmody. . . . In 1 Samuel 16:18, Saul’s servant de scribes David’s youthful skill upon the harp, and 1 Chronicles 23:5 and 2 Chron icles 29:25 describe his introducing string ed instruments into the service of the sanctuary to accompany the psalms that were sung there.—W . T. D avison . III. P raise in the M eeting This will be a most appropriate time to have a musical program. Use every soloist you have. Have a rousing song service, singing some of the Psalms. Let your Scrip ture lesson be one of the Psalms. Open with Psalm 100 and close with Psalm 23, repeated from memory. JANUARY 22, 1939 RUTH—AND STEADFASTNESS T he B ook of R uth Meditation on the Lesson Ruth, as a Gentile, was not included in the special covenant relationship between Israel and the Lord. But when she chose to identify herself with the covenant peo ple in their worship of Him, she found a place among those who received the prom ised blessing. Her story foreshadows the position of Gentile sinners in this present age since the coming of the Lord Jesus. W e who were “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world” (Eph. 2:12), are “made nigh by the blood of Christ” as we allow His death to cover and cleanse our sin. Boaz redeemed Ruth by paying in full the just demand of the law. Likewise the Lord Jesus in His atoning death became our Redeemer (cf. Rom. 3:24-26). He has paid the full penalty of sin and has brought us who believe into the family of God. In analyzing the character of Ruth for our own edification, we find that steadfast ness of purpose was dominant in her life. When she saw what she considered her duty, nothing could cause her to swerve from hfer course. Her devotion to duty is a challenge to all. It cost her much in the way of sacrifice as she took her place among the poor and lowly, but her faithful ness was richly rewarded. “Be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58).

The words in which the resolve of Ruth is uttered (Ruth 1:16, 17) constitute the most petermined, the most decisive, the most unhesitating confession of love in all litera ture. Her passionate outburst of tenderness is immortal. It has put into fitting words for all generations the deepest thoughts of loving hearts, and it comes to us over all the ce'nturies between, as warm and living as when it welled up from that gentle, he roic soul . . . To love is to give one’s self away, and when Ruth sobbed out her pas sionate resolve, she was1speaking the eter nal language of love. W e hear in Ruth’s words also that forsaking of all things which is an essential of all true religion. Her decla ration closes with a vow to Israel’s God. It exalts Jehovah as her future Guide and Shield.— S elected . III.
