be all and in all—He, the God from whom all blessings flow. Here and now we may all receive the gracious gift. Let us gather round the cross!— J. J ackson W ray . JANUARY 21 The Wonder of His Love "7 h a v e ch osen th ee in th e fu rn a ce o f af flictio n ” (Isa. 48:10). It is not in the furnace of affliction that man commonly chooses man. Our friend ships are most frequently the fruit of sum mer days. W e cling often to the friend who is downtrodden, but our first love came to him when he was not downtrodden: we did not ch o o s e him in affliction. All the more marvelous, therefore, is the divine love. . . Here is a love which does not merely en d u re in spite of the destitution of its ob ject, but which also actually chooses its ob ject in the moment of its destitution. —M om ents on th e Mount. "B rin gin g into ca p tiv ity e v e r y th ou gh t to th e o b ed ien ce o f Christ" (2 Cor. 10:5). God’s presence blends with every other thought and consciousness, flowing sweetly and evenly through our business plans, our social converse, our heart’s affections, our manual toil, our entire life, blending with all, consecrating all, and conscious through all, like the fragrance of a flower, or the presence of a friend consciously near, and yet not hindering in the least the most in tense and constant preoccupation of the hands and brain. How beautiful the estab lished habit of this unceasing communion and dependence, amid and a b o v e all thoughts and occupations! —D ays o f H eaven upon Earth. "Ye h a v e in h ea ven . . . an en durin g sub stan ce. Cast not a w a y th erefo re y o u r co n fiden ce" (Heb. 10:34,35). It is God’s will that I should cast My care on Him each day (1 Pet. 5:7). He also asks me not to cast My confidence away (Heb. 10:35). . But, oh, how stupidly I act When taken unaware: I cast away my confidence, And carry all my care! V '.i^ T . B aird . How are we to shine at once consciously and unconsciously—conscious of our power, and yet unconscious of our greatness? Our Lord tells us how. He says, in effect, “If you would shine effectively, if you would shine in such a way as to influence the minds of men, the motive of your shining must be a glory not your own.” So shine that you may glorify Another—'‘That men may see your good works, aifd glorify your Father which is in heaven.” —G eorge M atheson .
