DEVOTIONAL READINGS [C ontinued from p a g e 441] particles were transmitted into pure white. There is an alchemy of grace which under the pressure of burden, and in the furnace of affliction, transforms character, until in heaven we see the perfect product. —A. C. D ixon . JANUARY 29 Our Helper “T he Lord w ill g iv e stren gth unto his p eop le" (Psa. 29:11). The little sharp vexations. And the briers that catch and fret— Tell Him about the heartache, And tell Him the longings, too; Tell Him the baffled purpose When we scarce know what to do. Then, leaving all our weakness With the One divinely strong, Forget that we bore the burden, And carry away the song. JANUARY 30 Need of the Home “T od a y I must abide at th y house"' (Ik . 19:5). Oh, it makes a great change in any house when Christ comes into it! Jesus Christ is knocking at the door of your house. If you looked out of your window and saw me go ing up your front steps, you would not wait, but go yourself to open the door. W ill you keep Jesus standing on the outside, His locks wet with the dew of the night? The great want of your house is not a new car pet, or costlier pictures, or richer furniture —it is Jesus the Lord! —T . D e W itt T almage . JANUARY 31 In His Shadow "T he sh a d ow of a rock in a w ea ry land" (Isa. 32:2). In the shade of the Rock I am daily resting Where relief from my burden is always be stowed. Its comfort calms each hour of testing. In the shadow of Christ I lose my load. In the shade of the Rock I am safely hiding Away from a world of sin and scorn. In His outpoured love my soul is abiding. In His presence my hope for life is reborn. May I never fail to trust His revealing, To walk unharmed on the desert strand, To accept the balm of such heavenly healing In the shade of the Rock in this weary land. I f f M ildred L ong .
