To the Last Breath and Beyond What My Law Firm Is All About
A big part of being a lawyer is striving to learn as much as I can about my clients’ lives. If I can understand a client’s life, their situation, and their priorities, I can better serve them. With that in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to share a little bit about myself and the things that are important to me. Even though I’ve been an attorney for a while now, my practice is relatively new. I hope that by sharing a little bit about myself, I can get to know you a little better if you ever walk through my door. My pursuit of a career in law started back when I was in high school. While I was growing up outside a small town in rural southeast Iowa, I discovered I had a passion for analyzing and fixing problems, especially if doing so meant I could help people. One of my high school teachers picked up on this interest and steered me toward the legal profession. I’m glad she did. I wouldn’t trade the work I get to do today for any other career. That teacher wasn’t the only one who helped me become an attorney, though. Throughout my career, I’ve been blessed to have a lot of great mentors to help me along in ways that law books never could. That continues even as I start my new practice. I’m particularly grateful to Guy Booth, a lawyer from Mt. Vernon, who has been a tremendous help to me as I’ve learned how to navigate new practice areas. “I want to help my kids till my last breath and beyond — and I want to help you help your family in the same way. ”
attorney. Throughout those years, I had the privilege of helping thousands of injured Iowans. I enjoyed my time there, but it had always been a dream of mine to have my own law firm. So once my kids got a little older, I made the decision to go out on my own. While I do still handle some workers’ comp cases on a limited basis, I mostly work with families who need help with estate planning or the probate process. When my grandmother passed away and the family farm assets had to be managed, I saw firsthand just how important it was to have a legal plan in place which made my grandmother’s intentions clear and minimized the potential for conflict between her children. I also saw how helpful it can be for a family to have a good estate planning attorney and assistance with the probate process. That situation inspired me to
be an attorney who could help families with the estate planning and probate process.
Throughout the transition, my wife, Emily, and my three kids have been a constant source of support and joy. I met Emily while attending law school in Des Moines. We later relocated to Cedar Rapids, where we now live, so we could be closer to her family. My kids keep me young and make feel old all at once. They make me think about my own mortality, my legacy, and the need for a plan for the future. Every parent wants to make sure their children are taken care of in the best way possible, even after they grow up. I want to help my kids till my last breath and beyond — and I want to help you help your family in the same way.
