questioning me, too. I just repeated my intentions, but they were more intent on beating up the guy who came flying out of the garage. Luckily the man with the beaten face had a woman with him who seemed sane enough to talk and she said she hadn’t seen my dog at all. I didn’t believe them at the time. I asked the woman to let Neighbor Bob know if they see the dog and took that as an opportunity to leave the situation and get out of there. I got back in the truck with Neighbor Bob and we gladly left them to their business. I asked Neighbor Bob about them, and he explained they have quite the reputation of getting into trouble. That’s when we started talking about work and it ended up that Neighbor Bob needed some metal roofing for a project of his and he had been looking for some good options. I would later give him a quote and we ended up doing business together. Now, I know you’re all desperately wondering about the dog. Neighbor Bob found him the next morning out behind his house, and I went back to pick him up the next day. I didn’t get any racoons that night, but I learned you never know where your next lead may come from! – Emanuel Herschberger

There were lights and commotion going on at the house at the bottom of the hill and I thought my dog might have something to do with it. Neighbor Bob offered to take me down there, and I accepted. I knew nothing about this neighborhood at the time, and began to wonder why Neighbor Bob would want to take me down there. I got my answer just a few minutes later. As we pulled into the driveway of the house, a huge guy in a Harley Davidson jacket ran to his car. When he peeled out of the driveway he nearly hit us. I had no idea what was going on but I wanted to find my dog. I really did not want to get in the middle of this, but I also really wanted to save my dog, so I climbed out of the truck and headed towards the commotion. As I came around the corner of the garage, a guy came tumbling head over heels out of the door, followed by a man with a gun. I immediately thought to myself, “What have I gotten myself into?” Neighbor Bob was still waiting in the truck when more people began coming out of the back of the garage. That’s when the man with the gun turned his attention to me. He began asking what I was doing and what my business was there. “I’m just looking for my dog,” I told him. Another guy from the garage came up, face beaten and bloodied. He started

Back when I was a teenager and just getting into metal roofing, I went out racoon hunting. I had scouted a few different properties and stopped by a heavily wooded area I thought might be good coon hunting. After asking the owners of various houses on the land for permission to hunt on their property, I went out that evening with our family dog. What started as hunting, turned into so much more. It was in the mid-40s, the stars were out, and it was a calm, quiet night. Once I got out on the property, I let my dog loose and he took off running. Now, usually he’ll come back within 5 to 20 minutes or so just to let you know where he’s at, but this time was different. He disappeared, leaving me with no choice but to look for him. He wasn’t turning up at any of the spots I thought he’d go. I had searched for quite some time finding nothing. Then I heard him— it sounded like a mile and half down the road. I headed that way. As I came to a house on top of a hill, I went to the door, rang the bell and the owner of the house came out. We’ll call him Neighbor Bob. I asked Neighbor Bob if he had seen my dog, and he said he hadn’t. Just as Neighbor Bob answered me, we heard gunshots down the hill, followed by a dog bark.

ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS FORGETTING ABOUT YOU?

customers, address them by name, and go the extra mile to develop a real bond. Mindy Grossman, CEO of Weight Watchers, says, “Our ability to create that one-on-one engagement with a customer is a point of differentiation and strategic advantage for us.” No matter your industry, you can create that advantage for your business. MAKE PROACTIVE CONTACT If you only engage with customers when they are looking to buy, you’re a pricing company. Once a customer is shopping around, they already know what they want. They’re just looking for the best deal. Conversely, if you reach out to your customers to follow up, provide them with information, or even just share something fun, you’ll build brand loyalty. CREATE A COMMUNITY Speaking to your customers is great, but giving them a way to speak to each other can be just as valuable. It’s no secret that people share their experiences, so why not use those conversations to your benefit. If you have a prospective buyer, point them to a previous customer. Hearing about a great service from a customer is a lot more personal than simply promising you’ll deliver. Engaged customers are loyal customers. But it’s up to you to engage them. Don’t fall into the trap of focusing only on customers who will buy in the next 30 days.

When a lot of business owners think about customer engagement, they dwell on strategies that encourage people to buy what they’re selling. That’s far from the whole story when it comes to creating a loyal fan base that raves about your company. Customer engagement should be a constant initiative, not something that only happens when customers are thinking about buying. Engaged customers won’t forget about you. When the time to buy comes around, yours will be the first name on their lips. Engagement also drives word-of-mouth marketing. According to a recent Nielsen study, consumers rely on referrals from trusted sources more than any other form of marketing. If you give your current customers a reason to rave, they’ll spread the word. Here are a couple of ways to ensure that your customers become fans. BE PERSONAL Treat your customers like a number, and they’ll think of you the same way. Treat them like real people, and they’ll love you forever. Remember details about your

The benefits of metal roofing are endless, but perhaps the greatest one is their ability to put cold hard cash back in your pocket. A metal roof will save you thousands of dollars over its life cycle. It’s not by rocket science or magic — the secret is in its natural characteristics. SHINGLES A dark asphalt roof is a perfect attractor for the heat of the sun. It doesn’t just attract the heat, though — it also retains that warmth, resulting in a sweltering attic. To remedy this problem, the attic needs to be thoroughly insulated and fans need to be installed to circulate air. In the summer, attics with shingle roofs will easily and consistently exceed 100 degrees. NATURAL PROPERTIES Metal is different. Rather than absorbing the heat of the sun and storing it in the attic, metal reflects the sun away from your home. It’s estimated that this effect alone can save you up to 40 percent on summer cooling costs.

WHY METAL ROOFING IS T YPICALLY MORE EXPENSIVE You Get What You Pay For

EXPERTISE Metal roofing requires a very specific installation process. This specialized skill set is difficult to find, and therefore it’s more expensive. Without proper installation, the benefits of metal roofs are completely nullified. With just one leak, the entire roof could be compromised. LONGEVITY Metal roofs last significantly longer than roofs made with other materials. This means that sales of the product are significantly less frequent. As with most products that have longer sales cycles, the cost is generally higher. When push comes to shove, you’re typically going to pay more for a metal roof. But as is the case with most major investments, you truly get what you pay for with our product. Metal roofing may be more expensive to install, but it is significantly more cost-effective over the long run. Although it may cost more upfront, you will make up for it in energy costs, durability, color choices, weather protection, maintenance costs, fire resistance, and a higher return on investment for your home. Don’t let the upfront costs deter you from the bona fide long-term value of metal roofing.

Fact: Metal roofing is more expensive than most other types of roofing. This isn’t a secret that we are trying to hide. Unfortunately, many potential customers are deterred from metal because of this, and they opt for more traditional shingles. While making a decision about your roofing material is completely up to you, we thought it important to explain why metal roofs have a higher cost. RAW MATERIALS The raw materials and processes needed to make metal roofing materials are much more specific and elaborate than shingles. Also, most metal roofs are coated, either by galvanization or by a special UV reflector, to enhance durability and functionality.

Why Metal Costs More Than Shingles

A Fulfilling Life, or a Happy One?

GIVE UP THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS

In the years since “Man’s Search for Meaning” was written, it seems we’ve forgotten a lot of its advice. The Centers for Disease Control found that 4 out of every 10 Americans do not have a satisfying life purpose, and yet, 60 percent of Americans say they are happy. What gives? It comes down to the pursuit of happiness versus pursuing meaning in life. It’s the difference between “I’m going to buy this dress because it will make me happy” and “I’m going to volunteer at a shelter because it will be meaningful.” Happiness involves satisfying an immediate need, whereas finding meaning focuses on making choices that give us a sense of purpose. Even more telling, the Journal of Positive Psychology found that meaningful acts usually involve giving, but reaching happiness often means taking. Because of this, leading a meaningful life, while often more challenging, is also more satisfying. Is it possible that the pursuit of a meaningful life will lead us to happiness? Absolutely. Just don’t expect it to be an everlasting condition. Think of happiness the way psychologist Frank T. McAndrew does: “Recognizing that happiness exists — and that it’s a delightful visitor that never overstays its welcome — may help us appreciate it more when it arrives.”

How many books have you seen with the word “happiness” in the title? A lot, right? It’s such a popular topic because the pursuit, journey, and, ultimately, achievement of happiness is supposed to be the key to a fulfilling life. Happiness is the ultimate human condition; reaching it is our purpose and will bring us contentment. But before you pick up that guide to happiness, there’s some new data you need to pay attention to. Turns out, we’ve been focusing on the wrong goal. More and more research is supporting the benefit of pursuing a meaningful life over a happy one. Viktor Frankl could be called a leading expert on the topic. Frankl lived through the Holocaust in a concentration camp and saw firsthand how humans deal with unhappy circumstances. As a respected psychiatrist, his observations became the basis for his book, “Man’s Search for Meaning.” Frankl found that the people who stood the best chance of surviving the horrific experience were those who saw some sort of meaning in their lives, even under the bleakest circumstances. For Frankl, this meant providing therapy to others in the camp. As Frankl puts it, once a person finds meaning, they know the “why” of their existence, and they will be able to bear almost any “how.”
